Here is a picture of a real oldie. The guy is the grandfather of my friend’s wife. This is when he was fighting in France during WWI. Notice the vise mounted on his truck. It looks like a Prentiss to me. What do all of you think? Prentiss or something else?

I thought so, that’s why I pointed it out. As he said, it is run through the tail end. She might make a good user, or be a dynamic someone was looking for.

Whats up with those jaws? It loooks like the just checkered the casting. Are they cast in? I would have been all over it for $20. Good find.

I believe that these jaws are “drop forged” and Reed , along with all the other name brands new what they were doing!

Definitely a shame that this vise was chowdered up but thankfully it will be rehabbed and live an easier life

I agree. But I bet more than a few of us would have opened up a wallet to put down $20 for that vise.

I remember somebody saying that the early Taskmaster vises made in India, we’re not marked. They looked just like Wilton Cadets.
Is the back end of the subject vise rounded off with a cap on it or squared off with the end of the screw showing?

Duracraft made a 4" vise in the 80s, model MV-440. On a fast horse, they look very similar. The MV has no end cap, just a hole. There is only a removable sticker on the side indicating manufacturer information. Duracraft vises were manufactured in Taiwan

Very interesting! It certainly has a lot of casting features of a Wilton machinist vise. Would love to have better photos of the areas circled in the photo below. The jaw width and weight would also be helpful. I'm guessing that you don't have this vise in possession yet?



Anyone else see anything that could enlighten us about the authenticity of this vise? If it could be proved original, this vise would certainly be worth a "chunk of change" to the right collector.

I know they did make 79s Red Seal….

He has an American scale no. 79 and there is no red seal.

Here's a bit of an oddity that is for sale locally. At first glance it looks like a generic, Chinese vise shaped object. but at second glance it can be seen to have some interesting swiveling jaw inserts for holding round or irregular objects. It's stamped as made in Taiwan, and the patent number shows some more details about the design features of the swivelling jaw, as well as dating it to the 1980's. I have to hand it to the Taiwanese - they seem to step it up a notch from the Chinese approach of just copying and cloning what has been made before by others.

I have a couple Taiwanese tools.. there were some hand tools produced of a lower quality, for a spell, but they got over that issue, and are often associated by the ignorant as being Chinese… if you’ve never been to Taiwan, you should.. great food, and you’ll be eating everywhere.

I wonder if there's any leftover US vises in Europe from the WW2 time. The used to be (still are) loads of Jeeps and Harleys (the Army WLA and the Canadian WLC) from that time, some vises probably also came over? Never saw one though.

There are an extraordinary number of them. With shore-side duty stations to get orders to throughout Europe, many tools are shipped with military as well as civilians stationed overseas, and of course Heuer vises are everywhere. My mechanic had a bullet wilton.

Any landlord requesting to procure some of your things (washers/dryers/cars etc.) is quite normal, allowed, as long as it is your property, not the government’s. So military members have migrated tons of good stuff that has since been integrated.

No markings other than a small gold colored sticker that say "China".
Looks pretty well made, but really don't know how to judge a vice.
Any information would be great.

Annnnnnnnnd you’re gonna want a more substantial bench/table/stand for her tear down, cleanup, as well as mounting, than the black&decker that is more heavy duty, permanent, befitting. Floor is safer than that. No offense, I’ve used and sold them. Think Ground up and where you want the vise to be. establish a foundation.. until I got things moved around I ran a lil Wilton on a float block, I could move easy, protects floor, corner clamp on to tables as I was getting going.

She is really cool, Man, great save. FYI, you should have one more picture with the pin out, and the jaw swiveled towards the camera, as pictured here, and here. This alleviates many questions people probably haven’t asked, as well as provide a functional demonstration for the newbie eyes.

The patent is not listed at datamp.org on that unit. I've sent your photos and information to datamp.org's vise steward. I'm hoping he may be able to shed a bit more light on this one. I'm hoping he'll be able to suss out WHO made it. I can't make sense of the markings on the bottoms in either of your photo images.

Sticking with this theme was browsing and found this Fortis quick release vice with swivel jaws, none of the post knew when it was made or a model number was a 2013 chat. Shows that more of these were made by other makers.

Finally landed a 6 inch! Reed 206 (looks better in person). This thing is about 153 pounds and the stand it came with weighs just over 250…. All for $170. Neeess to say, I’m happy!
