After cleaning up the mess from the work on the mower I shifted gears and wanted to work on the steering for my grandson's Radio Flyer project.
I had dug through my drawers the night before and found a Torrington bearing in which I could use for the steering. Now to machine a recess in which it will be housed.
Facing off a piece of hydraulic rod from my stash of metal.

Next I ground a couple of HSS tools to perform a trepanning operation and sneak up on the depth as well as ID and OD of the recess. The Torrington bearing with both races measured .114" thick so I figured I would overshoot the depth a bit then machine the face down to obtain the correct depth less a little more to allow the bearing to be slightly proud of the recess.

Getting closer to the ID of the recess while matching the depth from the previous step.

Both ID and OD of the recess are achieved as well as about .125" in depth. Just a little deburring is all that is required before a test fit and depth check.

Bearing is slightly recessed by a few thou. so I measured the thickness of one of the races and determined that it was .020" and I would like to have the bearing stand proud by approx. .008"-.012" range.

Bearing is slightly proud of the recess.

Using a flat edge and some feeler gauges I measured the clearance.

Landed right @ .010" clearance, half the bearing race thickness.
