A quick search wasn’t turning up any Dayton fiberglass claw hammers, don’t want to dig into the Grainger catalog, might be gone a few days.

Today was a rare calendar event: an unscheduled weekend, a tool-heavy estate sale, and a nearby venue of interest to SWMBO!

We set out at 6 am to Nahant Beach north of Boston for some sunrise shelling. Our timing was good--the tide was out, the beach was wide, and there were lots of shells to chose from. We brought home an even dozen of sand dollars and shark eye sea snail shells, as well as assorted angel wings and some large surf clam shells.
Cost: free. Time with my best girl: priceless

20230930_125431.jpg

We next stopped in at a local eatery, the Capital Diner in Lynn (est'd 1928!) for breakfast and then headed to the nearby estate sale. The suburban backyard was overwhelmed by a huge 3-level workshop/carriage house just packed with tools, supplies, a Case tractor and even a vintage International Harvester pickup truck! I picked through the basement of the house and the workshop, but even on this second, half-price day, there was still soooooo much there, way too much to take everything of value. I passed on some vintage Craftsman and Kennedy tool boxes, an assortment of battery chargers, and a dozen plus bicycle wheels for SWMBO's yard art project (we have plenty already). SWMBO handed me her finds and left me to pick as she sat in the truck on an audio book.

I got the following for $50:

Box o' screws
Garden tools
Paint roller
Toilet valve and flapper kit

20230930_131900.jpg

OEMTools 25239 brake adjuster

Snap-on LDH-342 3/4-drive 1-5/16" socket, 1944 date code
Snap-on L-62 3/4-drive extension, date code 1944
Snap-on IM-62A 3/4-drive extension, date code 1960

Chicago Electric plastic welding iron, unused
Allstate clip-on vacuum gauge
No-name spark test light
2x25' tape measures

20230930_131920.jpg

Small WD-40 can
Unopened box of 2" exterior deck screws

20230930_131927.jpg

Outfeed roller stand
Short square-blade spade
30" pry bar

20230930_131932.jpg

I also bought these four pressure treated 6x6s for $30. I don't have an immediate need, but at that price, I couldn't pass them up.

Some things from “last day” estate sale this morning. Anyone know what the small “tri blade” unit is? It was in a handle but didn’t seem original. I mostly got it for the handle. A small gunsmith or jewelers screw driver, miller falls 199 driver, 2 big c-man drivers, a couple small eagle oilers, jacobs chuck, and some WM Johnson rivet setsIMG_4778.jpegIMG_4779.jpegIMG_4780.jpegIMG_4785.jpegIMG_4782.jpeg

Great day BB and Patrick!

For me A bit slow as we got a small bit of rain overnight and its pretty overcast. Only 4 stops planned and one TOO that didn't pan out Neither did the first stop, (and had the ad been honest, it wouldn't have been a stop...)

Second stop was a good one:

Right off the bat, I've been watching for one of these aluminum fishing boxes for a couple months, once I realized the company that made the small aluminum fly and spinner boxes also made full sized boxes. I'd not seen a cantilever style, but I'm good with it! Especially AT $5!

I'm not planing it for fishing however, but for Coleman repair/fettling parts/tools. This one should clean up pretty nice. The one "front" angled surface is a little ripply, but it has access so I should be able to get most if not all of that out.

Y1-Fbox-1.jpg

Y1-Fbox-2.jpg

Fully open it has great access to the bottom compartment:

Y1-Fbox-3.jpg

Side view so you can see the little side stub wall tilt out:

Y1-Fbox-4.jpg

All this came from the same place: a sling, it could be for a rifle but I think someone had it adjusted for a Thompson Contender with a long bull barrel. Leather strap, Fuel fitting for a boat tank, a small folding saw with Japanese type saw teeth. super light so for my day pack. target shooters tape 2 Sears/Dunlap combos,
a small driver and an old bottle with Chinese markings cast in? A buck each:

Y1-Sling-Strap-F-fit-saw-tape-dunlap-driver-bottle.jpg

Third stop: they were late opening and made us wait outside for 5-10 min. I was irritated. The can doesn't have enough to fill anything but its a handy size to have for spare fuel for say a night fishing trip. The little package is medium clay bar. I've been wanting to try some. And the red bag is a Lie, not MSR inside...

Y2-Clay-bar-Fuel-can-Stove.jpg

Its a 6-91 Coleman Feather 400 (400B) - Looks to be not used much? if it works "out of the box" I may take it on my upcoming hunting trip. and it did work even on the tiny dribble left inside. I'm wondering of that partial Qt. can was the only fuel it ever saw?

Y2-CM-400b.jpg

Last stop was an Estate sale - looked picked over, but claimed it was a "one day only" deal - just a cheap tarp, I'm throwing this on into the T-van for the upcoming hunting trip -its super light, but for a side wall on a canopy tarp, its fine.

Pretty sure four.cycle nailed it with Dayton. There are some on eBay. The stamp fits what shows on Don’s, though the handles are wood.

Only one local sale shown in Craigslist so we headed out this morning to check it out. We appeared to be the only customers. There was a table covered with a mix of tools and as I started to look through them the seller suggested that I take everything for a ridiculously low price so I did. He brought out a Craftsman carry box to put them in at no additional cost which was hard to argue with. Many of the tools were quite rusty so the evaporust containers are now full. I cleaned a few up that weren’t too rusty. The Dremel seemed to work fine. IMG_0398.jpegIMG_0400.jpegIMG_0403.jpegIMG_0421.jpeg

@BlueBomber - I have seen that three-sided tool in old catalogs, but I can't connect it to anything in my head at the moment.

@Outlawmws - that Coleman 400 is a damn nice unit. I have one of those. Lighter than most of the other "Peak1" models. Mine's been absolutely 100% reliable (unlike a couple earlier models I've had to fiddle-fart around with.)

I used a Peak1 for most of my '80 backpacking, but somehow (Looking at you, Brother!) I now have one of the feather 400s.

After the '80s, my backpacking partner carried a WhisperLite, one of which I almost bought today.

So there was lot's going on around here today. There was a church Rummage Sale up the street but there was nothing garage related there for me. I did pick up several smaller journals that I use for work notes - can't beat 50 cents each.

We stopped at a TOO Garage Sale and it was a tool stop. He was a carpenter ready to retire and move to Cape Cod so everything had to go. We picked up a U-Line 4-wheel dolly for $10 (not pictured) and this box of stuff for $12.

The 8-inch square is Made in USA but no brand name. The knife is a Barlow with "Carpenters Local Union 620 Madison NJ" imprinted in the handle. He had 3 or 4 of them in brand new condition. The puller is a generic made in tawian special. The spring clamps are mostly new-in-box except for the 2 clipped to the boxes.

Cheers

Jim

Nice find, Andy! I found and prestorved one a few years ago. Start here.
Anyone know what the small “tri blade” unit is?
It may have started life as a melon cutter, but I'm guessing it may been used as a Babbitt scraper, especially if it was in a pre 50s toolbox with pre 50s tools.

I had a whole list of sales to hit, and a schedule to make the most of it today, and wouldn't you know, the first sale was a no-show. So, figuring that they were just slow getting started, I hit my second sale, which was on the far side of town, and then went out for breakfast.
53224269912_75f9fb1a10_b.jpg

This was an estate sale company trying to get rid of leftovers, some of which were pretty good. I found a Long C chisel, Lufkin boxwood folding rule, box of pellets, and a newer Stanley rabbeting plane.

Checking online, it looked like that first sale had cancelled, so after some debate I decided to go back to that estate sale I hit on Thursday, with quite nice results:
53225643600_a292346f96_b.jpg

It was half-price day, so I spent about twice what I spent the other day, but I am pretty happy: An Indestro 1/2" socket box with good decal, empty Stanley box (free!), Klein replacement handle grips, Delta replacement spindle in box, machine lamp (too dirty too read the label right now), various reloading and shooting manuals, and an Ideal 310 reloading tool, complete in box, for a caliber I have been interested in, .222Rem

I most definitely have a problem… an auction problem.
IMG_2222.jpeg
I got all this plus another half a pick up load and only spent $50
IMG_2240.jpeg
Got all these books for $4, mostly vintage small engine stuff (one of my many hobbies).
IMG_2224.jpeg
IMG_2228.jpeg
IMG_2227.jpeg
These two were together for a bank breaking $6. Anybody know the brand of the small one or info about the top one?
The other rolling box is a Kennedy with 2 drawers and a storage cubby for a buck.
IMG_2234.jpeg
IMG_2235.jpeg
IMG_2236.jpeg
Got a bunch of T handle allens, most of a set of Bondus drivers and some small engine tools.

IMG_1492.jpeg
Got all the stuff in this pic for $10 lots of specialty tools for working on briggs and Kohler K-Series engines(my favorite) been wanting some of these for a while now so now we are in good shape.
More pics after sorting hopefully.

That’s what I originally thought it was, a scraper. The old timer apparently made small sail boats. So maybe not Babbitt but wood.

Found zero tools yesterday, but got these for $5 each. All the metal on the carriage clock is solid brass, and it still has the original key. The wall clock is pendulum driven, nice sounding chimes. Both need a little bit of work to get working right. I used to love tinkering with these about 25 years ago. Neither are worth much, but cool nonetheless.

There were some garage sales in my home town today, but none looked promising. I found an estate sale listed that had some lapidary equipment, but not much else, and out of boredom I stopped by. The lapidary equipment was long gone, but interesting items were scattered around the garage. I found a Sears hand carry box that had some useful items in it, and a number of loose items bundled with it dropped the total price down to $25.00.

20230930_170306.jpg

The carry box with a couple of bungee cords (one is new) and various import tools. The tray is in good shape.

20230930_170822.jpg

Various small items from the box:
Great Neck needle nose pliers
Vermont long 5/16" drill bit
Two chisels, The wide one seems to be good steel.
Flagging tape (I use this color often)
4-way flat trailer plug, new
GE Silicone Glue, new and unopened
1/8" cable ferrules for Nicopress, new
Simonds file
insert bit and allen wrench
Hose clamps
S-hooks
Master lock and key - it works
Rubber sheets
Battery terminal cleaner, unused
Drill bits and case

The rest of the items from the box:

It's possible. With my Army background one might mistake me for a landlubber, but my pop was prewar Merchant Marine, wartime Navy, and postwar Merchant Marine, and I grew up in and around sailing on inland lakes. When we weren't on the water we were working on the boats, and trust me when I say half of that was scraping! Lol. Could be useful in tight places. I'm still thinking bearings though. All kinds of things (bearings, gaskets, etc) were scraped. I have a sizable collection of bearing scrapers, including a few clearly made out of old three corner files. As a side note, scrapers were still being used long after bearing surfaces in automobiles were poured with some alloy other than a classic tin-based Babbitt (50's).

That K-21 turned out great. I have a feeling this one may just get wiped down, a quick wax and then off to it's next home. I may have to look into a decal,it really does look great. What I was amazed with is the weight empty ,it's a chunky box, almost as amazed as I was that it was available late day of an estate sale.

I think it will definitely be handy after it’s cleaned up. I have a spike buck antler shed I found that I think will become it’s new handle.image.jpg

Picked these up a few minutes ago for $5. I've been looking for a used "sidewinder" ratchet for work for awhile. Guy threw in the proto a-8505-9.
