Local CL has a Delta 22-540 12" planer for sale, $100. Looks in good condition and price seems fair. Anything I need to check out, such as bearings, that I can do without taking it apart? Advice appreciated.

for the price, I'd probably just bring a scrap piece of hardwood and run it thru. if it doesn't jam or sound like death, good to go. blade sharpness can be fixed easy

roller heads shouldn't look all mangled visually, and should not be rock hard so they can grip the wood and push it thru

test it lowers and raises smooth

about all i can thnk of

For $100 I wouldn't expect to run wood through it without a little work. That's pretty cheap if you can.

The above is pretty sound advice, rollers will be a bear to source, as would head elevation stuff.

Might want to poke around ereplacementparts for spare to know before you buy.

I have the same one. Make sure it goes up and down easily. I needed to replace one of the elevator nuts and it was hard to find at the time. Look at the feed rollers. They could be really dirty or worn out. It should have in feed and out feed extensions but a lot of times they're missing. Also you need a guide to set new blades which you can buy new but would be nice to have included. If it's ready to go 100 might be okay, but an equivalent new planer isn't very much more

I have one of those.. have used it a ton as did the guy before me.. heavy little sob.

Make sure it turns on... raise n lower it.. make sure the feed rollers also turn.

Duller the blades, louder it will be.
