I was on Facebook Marketplace the other day, and someone in one of the vise groups posted up a photo of what he claimed was a Craftsman 5198 vise, and said that he would be getting it via his uncle soon. I had no idea who this person was (never seen their posts before) but I chimed in and said that was a very hard vise to find. He posted back "Interested?". And I said if you mean would I be interested in buying it, I might. So he said to PM him. I did. I asked him where he was located and he said Virginia but he could ship it. He knew where I am since I gave him my city and state. So far, so good. I gave him my cell number, and he texted me back. I asked him via text if he accepts Paypal. He said he doesn't do that which I thought was very odd since from his picture on facebook this guy looks 30 something. But he said his cousin does, and that I could pay his cousin and he would get the money. Strike 1. I looked up the area code he was texting from and it was 408, which is from California. I mentioned this in a subsequent text, since he told me on facebook he is in Virginia. He wrote back and said "Did I say Virginia? No dude". Strike 2. And he said that the vise would cost me $115 total including shipping from California. By the way, when I pulled up his facebook profile I saw that he basically has no posts, no details, and at least half of his "friends" are bikini clad facebook vamps. Oh, and in his main facebook picture he is sporting a covid mask. Strike 3.

3 strikes and you’re out. The last strike, the $115 including shipping, is enough by itself to show you who you’re dealing with. I highly doubt that the 5198 is even his vise. Picture lifted off the internet.

If you wanted to waste your time and mess with him, ask him if it would fit in a flat rate box.
Guys who know vises probably know that a 5198 is WAY too big and heavy for a flat rate box.

When you click into their FB profile, there is a link somewhere that shows the "name" you are chatting with. If the FB vise belongs to a Fred Smith profile, but the chat name is nowhere near that, raise your hackles even higher.

edit: and no 5198 listed in CA.

Tip:
Ask for a photo of the item with the day's current date and your name/user-name written on piece of paper in the same pic with the item.

Yeah I’ve seen that tried as well and it’s usually pretty obvious, as that one is. They aren’t looking to really fool a smart person, they’re looking to sucker some poor idiot, as idiots pay better. 😂

So many times I've thought I might be dealing with a scammer and they just turned out to be someone with absolutely no clue, but, completely legit.

The communication skills of some people are shockingly bad.

If he lives in Malibu he sure as hell doesn't need to sell vices on Facebook. $115 is about the average tip for dinner at a restaurant in Malibu.

Actually I just downloaded his one facebook photo where you can clearly see him. Here it is below. On his account page he goes by Bob Taylor. But if you google that photo, you get Dr. Fernando Gomes. You also get David Miller. Bogus. Scammer.jpg
