Some recent (OK, today) acquisitions, all from HD...

Starting with plumbing (OK, this is a parts kit, not a tool, to rebuild a leaky Delta faucet).

20231014_205243.jpg81181~2.jpeg20231014_192610.jpg

THIS is the tool, in case my repair fails. I also need to replace a bathroom faucet. Our (city) water quality just keeps getting worse and worse...

20231014_205625~2.jpg20231014_193831.jpg

I also bought this set of Husky 3/8-inch drive security torx bit sockets. They're augmenting an older set of 1/4-inch drive ones ("OEM / Professional" brand, on the left in the pic). Ironically, the smaller set has a reusable package, while the new ones are going to need power equipment to open (and destroy) the package...

I know that there's a LOT of overlap in the sizes, but I think the 3/8 drive will be better for the larger sizes.

One of the first jobs for this is removing a jammed seatbelt retractor / tensioner. It's not a security torx, but I figure these should be fine, and if they break, they have a lifetime warranty.

Haven't used any of these tools yet, LOL. But, I did (mis-) use a tap, and royally screwed up the corroded threads in the handle on the kitchen faucet, when I installed the valve repair kit. No drips, but I have to wait for a replacement handle from Delta.

(...and I need to re-do the repair kit, as I forgot to add plumbers grease to the seals. There's a reason I don't do plumbing for a living...)

F90F633F-59F3-4CD2-BF97-86FBB584F4C0.pngExhaust removal pliers. I have to replace the muffler and tail pipe on my Escape so I needed these. Not something I had already. Someone bought them, used them and returned them so I managed to get them more than 10% actually because they seen my uniform and gave it to me at my shops cost.....

You work on cars all day for a living and don't have one of these already? Ha! Yeah, I realize exhaust work isn't common, but this will be the best $30? you ever spent. If you want to find out, don't use them immediately. Fight a hangar for a while. Then use them.

Ace hardware sells their brand handle. It's not as stout though. I was shocked to see it hanging there in the store, but it technically did work.

I tried it, but then returned it and in True GJ fashion bought a tap and die kit. I did drill and tap out the delta handle to the next size up. 5/16, then I ordered a stainless steel set screw as no one stocked them around me. I know I had used grease on those threads last time I changed it out. I put some silicone grease on the threads this time. Guess I'll see in a decade if it'll strip out. ;)

In the immortal words of Tom Hanks (in "Big")... I don't get it.

Who fights hangers? Just cut them off and replace them along with the rest of the rusted out hulk...

I already had the T&D set, but... Mea Culpa... I screwed up and tapped for 7-1.0 mm (should have used 1/4-28). It's amazingly close l, but just barely loose enough that it won't hold pressure.

Delta isn't charging me for the new handle. If they were, I'd probably try JB Weld, and re-tap to the correct size. Or, go up to the next size as you mentioned. But, it's chrome plated pot metal, so my expectations of success are pretty low there.

I'll be adding antisieze to the set screw, for sure.

I convinced myself I needed some Metric low profile sockets, and got my first set with a 17mm external hex drive. Home Depot offered a metric and a SAE Husky set for $52 so I got that brands version. I bought a USAG 17 mm wrench with a retaining ring to drive the sockets which is a really nice ratcheting wrench. It holds all of the sockets except the 2 largest very well. Those large sockets have shorter hex sections, that don’t allow the USAG retaining ring to fully engage. What fully retains all of the sockets are the APEX pass though ratchets. Gearwrench, SATA, Crescent pass through sets, as well as the serpentine tool, and even the tap and die T-handle are all compatible. They all have a retaining ring that slips into the groove in the socket. The Husky sockets gives you a full height of 0.89 inches. A 17mm mountain long offset ratcheting wrench is 0.740 for comparison. The GW pass thru’s are 1.03 inches.

Does that USAG 285KA 17mm ratcheting wrench have a ball detent to hold the nano type sockets with 17mm hex or retaining ring inside the 12pt box? Can u explain a little? Nice little tool haul btw!!

The retaining ring is not centered in the box end, but offset toward the top of the wrench. It is about 3/8 of an inch from the bottom of the wrench. This works quite well in most applications. If you wish to retain the fastener, insert it deeply into the wrench, whereas if you want to just tighten or loosen the fastener slip the wrench 3/8 or so on and turn. That way you won’t have to deal with the tight fit all the time, like with a centered retaining ring. The hex end on the larger nano sockets gets shorter, and is barely the 3/8 long to reach the retaining ring and doesn’t engage with it. The 19 mm socket will fall out with the slightest jar. The 10mm won’t fall out unless you pull on it. Hope this explanation is clear.

Did you get this from Amazon Japan? I ordered the same set but it was pretty poorly packaged and the 2mm punch is bent. Did you have any issues with your shipment?

That's a head-scratcher to me. In what instance would someone be able to use a swivel that only bends in one direction like that?
My thought was that the intended use is on an extension and used as a breaker bar/flex head.

Had what I thought was a small Knipex order delivered. Shipping box was way too heavy for the order.

Picked up some pliers wrenches and a pair of 41 44 200 Long nose grip pliers.
IMG_20231021_135033.jpg

No big deal. But what was a big deal was that I ordered two sets of the Wera Christmas metric hex plus L keys 05135813001. What came were two retail displays (total of 12 sets). Looks like they failed to break the retail displays apart and just shipped the outer packing box as "one set".

IMG_20231021_135241.jpg

Already sent a note to the seller, but don't think I'll hear anything until Monday.

IMG_20231021_135342.jpg

They are nice, but certainly don't need 12 sets.

Two pack of M12 3.0 batteries on sale for $79, (which is the same price as the M12 1.5 two pack) and just $74.10 with my military discount. They will replace the two 1.5 batteries I've been using since 2016 and discharge quite frequently nowadays.
Also bought some coax connectors for my tv antenna install.

Did they charge you for 2, or 12???

A complete refresh of the screwdriver drawer. IMG_0059.JPG

IMG_0061.JPG

I, too, like Wiha, but wow!

The day will come where I have the good screwdriver drawer or section... then another section for nasty old things that are used for all of the things you like to use a screwdriver for that don't involving screwing/unscrewing. For now, I have the great and the good and the adequate intermixed.

Was that Amazon that sent the display case sets?

They did that to me once with some knife sharpeners. I ordered one but received one display case of 12. I wrote them and explained, I even spoke with them on the phone. They did come and pick up the 11 left in the display case, then they refunded my money for the one I ordered since I had "returned it". I wrote them again, but no reply. I guess the free knife sharpener was in exchange for my time explaining their mistake. I lost out then. ;)

Next time Amazon sent me something extra, I just kept quiet because of that previous experience. To be fair it was only a couple dollar item so my lack of action saved everyone time and money.

It was Knipex Middle East, not Amazon. I'll wait for their response and see what they say. Don't want anyone in trouble for something that can be easily corrected.

Too funny. Can't tell you how many old school Craftsman screwdriver handles I've destroyed using them as chisels. Not to mention the blades with heat marks from using a torch on them (why, I don't remember, probably to melt into something plastic or nylon???). I didn't even bother trying to bring those back to Sears...

1. I admire that you're doing the right thing.

2. The middle east? This is probably the least of their problems right now. Probably ours soon enough, but that's a tangent I don't want to think about with two teen boys in the family.

3. Add me to the list if/when you need to offload a set!

I get it. It really does depend on the value of the items. It would be worth it for them to come pick it those extra hex key set. With my knife sharpeners, those 11 were over $100 total, so it was worth it for them to pick it up as well. Although they thought I had just returned it.

I sleep well at night.
