An old friend of mine unexpectantly left her job as a manager of a well known tool company..I got her discount...wish I bought more stuff while she was there...she gave her 2 week notice and they told her to leave right then and there...good thing for me I became friends wih the shop guy so I will at least get employee discount...just not the manager price...just shows you can never trust a woman especially when it comes to your tool(s):lol_hitti but all laughing aside she joined a competitor and got a decent raise and benefits:thumbup:

That stinks, I have had several friends in simular situations, that is I got one heck of a discount while they worked some place until they quit. I now got a close realative working for Northern Tool so now I need to find more tools that I need.

Thats why I wouldnt give notice anymore, when I leave my job to go out on my own theyll know the morning off.

Ditto that. When I was planning to leave my last automotive job, I told the owner of the shop I was looking for another job. I told him that I would give him two weeks, a month, two months, or whatever he wanted to find a replacement.

The ***** called me that evening and fired me.

He did call about ten days later and begged me to come back to work for him. I told him to go pound sand.:lol_hitti

That is exactly why you don't give notice until you can walk in to your other job the next day. I don't remember the last guy that gave notice and was working until the 2 weeks were up.

You are better off telling them you are retiring. Then you get the full 2 weeks and probably a party on the last day in your honor.

I own a business, not automotive, and have had employees quit by just not showing up. I go the extra mile to make sure they don't collect a penny of unemployment afterward as it really screws my business when someone does that. I can see you guys point though as some employers would fire you for fear you would talk someone else into going. You tried to do the right thing and got fired for it. In my case, if an employee doesn't show up, I have to deal with a bunch of mad customers that came in with the knowledge that the employee would be there.

Not to get too OT, but anytime I have ever left a job, I have always given a 2 week notice, and have never been let go before then. Its the classy way to do business. Even if you do get the boot, you walk away knowing you did the right thing. I am still on good terms with every company I have worked for in the past, and could go back to those places at any time if I needed a job. Im sure my prior work ethic and perfomance is part of that, but I know for sure if I didnt give notice, those job positions would never be open to me again.

Now that I work for the family business, I know what its like to be on the other side. I watched a lot of people leave jobs at past employers, and I was one of the very few that ever gave notice. Its screws over the company you work for, it ruins your oppertunity to use them as a reference, you lose any relationship you have with the company (which you never know when their help may be of use in the future), its just not what I was tought to be the right thing to do. It shows a total lack of respect, IMO.
