Todays Find.. Somewhat of a Good Deal.. On some Snap On Goodness

I was browsing my local Craigslist today and ran across a ad that said Snap on Hydraulic Press $120... I immediately double clicked on the ad and was almost shellshocked at what i seen. The ad mentioned not to call till after 530pm but i couldnt resist the urge, So i called and talked to the Gentlemans wife and explained how i was interested in the Press and would give full asking price (ad said $120 obo) She immediately perked up and offered to give me her husbands Work number. I gave him a call and explained i was about a 1hour and 20 min away and i would take the Press and if he would hold it for me i would drive down there and take it off it hands when he got off work at 530pm. Long story short.. I was at his residence at 530pm and loaded up and back on the road by 545pm. He made a comment while we was in the shop that he could hear his phone ringing, LOL He has now taken it off Craigslist. Anybody see the ad before it was pulled? Im not sure who makes these units for Snap on, It has a Snap on emblem on Head that looks legit account its got the old paint in between the letters. All the steel is stamped Bethleham Steel and minus some of the pressing attachments and the homemade wheel that adjust the up/down screw it looks to be in Excellent condition. I intend on going thru the Hydraulic pump and Ram and installing new seals as i can see a little weaping coming from both. I checked the Snap on website and they have a identical unit with identical measurements and it retails for............

Well i currently have a press, Ive used it for Pressing stubborn Hydraulic jack pins, bearings over the years etc. I think im gonna keep this one, completely rebuild the hydraulics, Blast the Frame and hit it with some fresh primer and Paint. This one by far is better than what i currently have, You can make adjustments by screwing the Push Ram up and down along with move the table height with the pins. The one i have now is a Homemade press with a 20 ton bottle jack and the only adjustment is using the table and its also only a bench model.

It's an hour down to Eldon and I can't just take off from work, so I'll keep looking. I've picked up a couple of SO shop tools on CL, but that press was a nice score. I've seen similar presses with a remote ram go for over 300 at auctions....I can't believe SO wants almost 5k for that new.

Well i know that the hydraulics are Walker/Lincoln designed which makes sense as Snap utilized them for alot of there OEM Shop equipment. Im not 100% sure if they are the OEM for the actual Frame or not, Im leaning towards Yes but im just speculating. I have an old press with a VERY similar frame. I gotta check it @ work. Thought I remembered Hein Warner on a decal. Jack portion had been replaced already.

I suspect the Frames look similar from model to model, The Pump is definitely Walker design and it appears mine is from the early 70's as scrounged this up from the 71' catalog.

Well you know anything with Snap on badging or color doubles the price tag, That Snap on service is damn expensive. LOL.... In all honesty though there is no comparing this unit to a Chicom or even my homemade press. I knew this thing was old but i had no idea it was 40 years old and i cant emphasize how well this thing is built and the hydraulic system is 1st rate and will be in 100% working condition when im done.

true. I have no issue paying more for quality made goods, but damn that was a shocker.

Yeah there is no doubt in my mind that similar presses can be bought cheaper than $4700.... But you have to look close paying attention to details such as the steel thickness and Width because all "H" Presses are not made the same, Nor do they all use I beams anymore and in regards to the hydraulics...well lets just say after 40 years of use this unit can be fully re-sealed back to NEW condition. If you seen a actual Walker/Snap on OEM Press bring $350 you should have bought it, You could have sold the Hydraulics and made some money. When i was looking for info on this unit i ran across a ton of similar models (hand pump/foot controlled pump) but when I started looking at the dimensions of the Iron itself, It was obvious that it Smaller Gauge. Im stoked to own something marked "Bethlehem Steel" as it was once a Giant in the steel world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethlehem_Steel. I also like the fact that the Hydraulic Press portion can be slide Left or Right to allow off center pressing if required. You dont get that option on alot of presses nowadays.

Ill admit... The thought crossed my mind a few times as i kept running scenarios thru my head that i might have to compete with other sellers when i arrived as i even hit the ATM twice prior to leaving for the sum of $500. The
Guy was a stand-up guy and made every attempt to make sure i left a happy buyer, he gave me all his pressing attachments and even helped me load the bad boy.

What I meant by the same press is exactly that, the same press as far as I can tell from pictures and your description. The one I saw go for $350 was a great deal. Yours blows that deal out of the water.
