Saw this Craftsman roller at an Estate sale today, it was reasonably priced, but I have no need for it and I'm not a collector/restorer.

I was curious, is it 40s or 50s?

Craftsman Toolbox.jpg
Two years only 58-59. In 1960, they switched from AMD to Waterloo and started the grey/red series. That is the larger set, with the optional two drawers underneath. Pretty rare bird.

That cabinet was available 1955 to 1959, but being as the cabinet pictured above has the crowntop logo the range lowers to 58-59 I believe. As Cruzan80 says above as I didn't read all the posts before replying!!! From the 1959 Catalog: 1701475934355.png

I used to have one of those 58-59 C-man rollers. Sold it to Smokeshow. (this is kind of a pattern)

I stopped by three sales today, and boy, pickings are slim right now.

Everything is from the first stop. SK diamond ratchet, various sockets (Snap-on, SK, Wright, etc.) and the coolest thing, a Mack truck ID plate. $4. The other two stops were more trouble than they were worth.

...a Mack truck ID plate.
Odd that it says New York. Pretty sure they moved to Allentown in 1907, but that doesn't look that old. I am working on a Mack toolset (we have a thread!), because I grew up near Allentown, and it's just cool, but I know little about the trucks. Perhaps they still claimed NY as corporate address. That model number and a good Mack history site would help (edit: with age).

Now that I am home from dinner, it is the plate for a model EQ:
10,661 were built between 1937 and 1950. Original cab-over engine (EQU) was 16,000 pounds with the EQ at 23,000 pounds. By the late forties, design improvements increased GVW to 25,000 pounds on the dump truck, 27,000 pounds on the EQ, and 45,000 pounds on the tractor-trailer combination. The 354-cubic inch gasoline engine was used in the original specifications, and was superseded by the 431- cubic inch Thermodyne engine. The 457-cubic inch and 510-cubic inch diesel engines were optional.
I am sure someone could dig a little deeper with the chassis number, but I haven't gotten there yet. Oh, and they moved to Allentown in '05.

Mack built fire apparatus at a plant in Long Island City, Queens at least into the early 1950's. I'm not sure if other truck types were built there, its actual location or years of operation but we have a number of delivery photos of rigs sold to Long Island fire departments that were taken in front of the plant in our files at the Nassau County Fire Museum. The pictures that come to mind were L models that were produced from the early 1940's until 1956.

Well, I had an unscheduled Saturday with SWMBO otherwise occupied, so I decided to take in an estate sale about 40 min from the house. The pics showed a packed garage, so it seemed promising. It was not. I arrived late morning to find the yard in front of the shop full of tables of typical yard sale junk, for sale by the wife, and a grumpy husband still trying to move more of her stuff out of his shop onto the tables. When I asked about stuff for sale in the garage, I was pointed to a very short list of large machines shop tools-- nothing I wanted.

I spent less than 15 min there and returned to my truck to evaluate my options. There was another sale an hour further west that had some interesting furniture and tool pictures. Normally, I wouldn't travel, but since I was already this far out....

Again, came away with nothing. I'd failed to note that the sale closed early on Saturday, and rolled up a half hour after closing. The sale folks were just getting ready to get in their cars. They confirmed that the one piece of furniture I was really interested in was already gone and invited me to come back tomorrow. Sigh.

If you read this far hoping for a silver lining, I'm sorry to disappoint you. But sometimes, it's helpful for our group to hear about the "that *****" amongst the "you *****". I only succeeded in burning up 12 gallons of gas today. At least I had a pretty drive through rural Massachusetts. Hopefully, the rest of you all had better luck today.

Yep! Sometimes its better never to leave the homestead, but if you don't you can't... Today was one of hose rare "stay home and sort/put stuff away you have been ignoring" days...

Kennedy 526. Drawers work, surface rust only should be an easy clean up . $6.

Your ****!
Yes he does! With or without the front cover! (that size generally get benched and not carried)

@Patrickm82 -

looks like Oxwall (Japan) was copying S-K's fancy knurling.

In other news....

Jigsaw Circular Saw Belt Sander 120223.jpg
Black & Decker 6-1/2" circular saw
Black & Decker 3-inch belt sander
Shopmate Variable-Speed jigsaw

FREE!
(okay... $5.50 for the bridge toll to go over to Gig Harbor and pick them up... )

Circular saw might come in handy for repairing the casement on my front door. Had to kick my front door in earlier this morning to get into the house. Some of us are just lucky.

One of those days almost didn't go out, but glad I did.
- Full TW acetylene "owner" cylinder ($50)
- Victor ST1000FC torch w/30' of 1/4" hose ($20)
- Almost new flourescent trouble light ($3)
- NOS front tires for my l&g tractor ($10)
- Assortment of SK 1/4" sockets, drive adaptors, u-joints, extensions, set of 1/4" deep well sockets, proto and craftsman 3/8" ratchets, 1/2" thumbwheel ratchet, small screwdrivers, cotter pin assortment, sandpaper for palm sander, drill index, aluminum funnel, whetstone, electronics solder, replacement hepafilter, full bottles of gojo and liquid wrench, led bulb, printer ink ($40)
- 14x vintage Corelle "crazy daisy" dishes ($2)
- 2 sets of garage/shop shelves ($10) (not shown)
Also picked up ~20x new double-wall "home depot" storage boxes, 20# propane tank (empty but worth $15 to Blue Rhino) and folding banquet table for free.

Passed on empty "leased" 125 oxygen bottle for $20. Don't need the headache.

My kind of haul! You ****!

For $6, You **** twice!

But sometimes, it's helpful for our group to hear about the "that *****" amongst the "you *****".
That does ****! I had a similar experience on Thursday--not nearly as long a drive as you, but around 45 minutes and came away empty and annoyed that the company claimed "Tools, tools, tools!!" with only **** to back it up.

Today I fared better with a company I like and respect. Their ad showed a small socket box and I found it untouched in the early afternoon. It turned out to be a Giller and had a few Giller 1/4" tools in it together with mostly offshore stuff and several small ignition wrenches from various makers for $10. While I was mulling over whether or not I wanted it, I noticed a dirty plastic box against the wall on the same table. Unable to see through the once-clear top I opened it to find a partial New Britain 1/4" set, a rust-frozen Plomb WF-20, a Duro-Chrome No. 4492 3/8" rat, a couple of Indestro Select Steel DBEs and a Snap-on MV5 1/4" sliding T.
All for $6.
I immediately lost interest in the Giller box.

02 Dec 23.jpg

I found the New Britain pieces in the 1953 catalog, probably as part of their 17-piece midget set. So I'm missing six pieces plus the box.
Top to bottom:
NM 43 Rat
NM 51 Flex
NM 20 6" Ext
NM 70 Sliding T
NM 38 Flex Spinner
The two sockets on the left are period correct but I haven't found how much later the other four were made--due to a lack of catalog coverage. These do show a classic manufacturing disregard for branding orientation--two are up and two are down.

Not sure why, but knives keep following me home. This week's estate sale knives: 7 Cases, 2 Winchesters, one Hen & Rooster, and one Kabar. At least they don't take up much space and care and feeding is minimal. :)

You officially earn my fist you ****… congratulations

We are still using Corelle at both houses. Great stuff.
Like Outlaw we were dealing with rain but there was a tool sale in Richmond I really wanted to check out. I’ve been to a couple of sales at the same place and haven’t been disappointed yet. When we arrived the sale had apparently been rained out. Plan B was a moving sale in Oakland. The tools had apparently gone early and I wasn’t interested in the $10.00 huge old table saw. Plan C was a tool sale in Alameda. By the time we arrived almost everything was gone. Most of the items that were left were free with good reason. I did see a couple of things I wanted and the seller gifted my wife a rusty cast iron corn bread thing. I guess that I’ll try a little vinegar on it because she won’t go for evaporust. We had stopped by a sale close to home first to check out some WW2 Navy Tepco China. Since the seller wanted $350 for the set and many pieces were cracked I imagine that it won’t be going anywhere but I picked up a case for my old 9.6 volt battery tools. IMG_1538.jpeg
The speeder is a free HinsdaleIMG_1546.jpegIMG_1547.jpeg
The partial free hacksaw is a Millers FallsIMG_1548.jpegIMG_1549.jpeg
My favorite was the brass plated Noera oiler that I found when the Alameda seller reluctantly let me check out his basement. IMG_1542.jpeg
but the huge tap set wasn’t bad. IMG_1540.jpeg
Outlaw, any suggestions for putting this back into use?IMG_1545.jpeg
All in all, we could have done worse on a rainy day.

Here is my minor haul for the week, a Durham set of roll out shelves, that previously had a bit of an accident, denting several shelves. I need some time to straighten them out a bit before use. May need to reinforce the top edge a bit.

PXL_20231203_001826293-X3.jpg

Seller was moving, and several buyers were geeking out over various things like skateboards. The rain had been intermittent, so stuff was still stacked on a tall workbench just inside the door. As he was pulling stuff out, I looked under the bench, and saw a big newer Wilton vise, 6-8” jaws. Couldn’t get his attention long enough to ask why the heck he needed it, as it looked unused. Killing more time as stuff was moving out, I noticed a SWAG table on a newer cordless MKE. Neither was for sale.

Yesterday, Saturday that is, I went down to the only sale that looked promising this late in the season, and I thought I struck gold.
53372550856_9dd434f1f9_b.jpg
Well, as it turns out, I got a little over my skis on this, and ended up paying eBay prices for things I was going to flip. No real loss, but I thought I was doing so well and was going to make some cash... Anyway, a Belden/NAPA wiring terminal kit, Snap-on: flashlights, partial and complete rebuild kits, driver handles, clutch alignment set, left hand bits, sockets, and picks. Most of that is going to go up for sale, so if you are interested, drop me a line.

After that, as I was in the neighborhood, I stopped by my favorite used tool dealer and picked up:
53372875239_3a28f2e45a_b.jpg
Snap-on brake adjusting set, Wards pistol grip push drill, Stanley folding rule (I am sure this is ivory, trust me!), and a Stanley Hurwood driver. Always good to talk to a successful man dealing in our type of things.

After that I hit a good local thrift store and picked up some reading material:
53372896179_7d8e050234_b.jpg
A Conrad for myself, you don't often see the Cather book with a good dust jacket, so it will go on the shelf, and the Thorne Smith will get flipped, as it is a first of his, and worth a few hundred. I will pass it along to a dealer friend of mine who will have plenty of room to make some money, as will I.

Finally, I hit a small garage sale that listed tools, but didn't show any pictures:
53372566291_3834b43778_b.jpg
Blue Point raised letters combo, Britool metric combo, Eagle oiler, Western knife, and a half dozen Klein nut drivers. He was asking so little that I gave him a five and told him to keep the change, as I don't like paying too little at private sales.
