Wow - that's a beautiful counterbore set!

I didn't build this but picked it up off Marketplace for $30 (including tools). It's double sided and whoever built it put a lot of thought into it. Can't see in photo that it also has torque wrench, transfer punch set, Ramset driver and some cartridges, and soldering iron. in the side bottom drawer. Great for rolling right to where I'm working.

The top one has a wood slide extension and the bottom one just pulls out so you have to be a little more careful with that one.

I’m going to bring this thread back to the top.

I finished this wooden tool chest last year as a retirement gift for a great friend I worked with.
Most of the construction was done using solid cherry, walnut, along with cherry veneer plywood for the back and side panels.

Hi All: I recently picked up this tool box that was from WWII. It belonged to a Wing Commander from the RAF. These were some of his working tools as it was explained to me. I recently researched his name and added a history about him on the inside of the box.
I’ll be displaying this box in my 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside Pickup truck along with the other many tools I have acquired.

Simple file box with a decent backstory.
I‘m a sucker for finger (box) joints and I really like the decorative lid cut and simple hinge on this box.
IMG_3601.jpegIMG_3599.jpeg
Backstory:
This box was used in the 30’s by my grandfather while he was postmaster at a very small southern illinois town.
My dad had it on his workbench from the late 50’s (that I can remember) thru 2003 when he passed and we sold his house.
It sat on my various benches in three different houses until about 2016 when I cleaned it and gave it to my wife to store part of her heavily used recipe card collection.

I love that fact that it’s still in the family, and again in almost daily use.

I love those crate type toolboxes. The construction is marvelous. And they're indestructible. Steel inserts!

Here’s the whole enchilada. I’ve posted parts of this in a couple of threads.
Wooden cabinets, some with wooden drawers, some with metal drawers.
IMG_0698_Original.jpeg

This storage unit has three separate lower cabinets and a lift off counter top. This unit is still evolving.
The pic also shows the first wooden machinist chest I built.

Wish I had the lid...
Outlaw, You may like this really old cabinet. Once I fabricate a lid for this and others, some will become coffee tables or used as art/photo/drawing cabinets. This is a somewhat less common three drawer cabinet vs the more popular five drawer cabinet by Hamilton.

That looks like a nice one Army! A top should be fairly easy to make. Maybe with some glass to display the contents of the top drawer? that could be lined with felt..

I've thought about that and and at close to 32"x44" it is plenty of room for my Marklin Z scale railroad. Or my misc car widgets. The thing is....I have 40 plus cabinets - mostly 5 drawer cabinets.

I picked this up over the weekend:
53080033371_e3c542acd2_b.jpg

I paid a little less than what is marked on top, but I didn't look closely at it. It is a little rougher than I thought, but that is OK. I will haver a winter project. I doubt I will find original pulls, and while I could make some similar to the originals, I think I am going to look for something that would be close but have the same feel to them as the box does. It has the original cast side handles still, so that is nice
53080239144_7b08c1ab02_b.jpg

After doing some research, it is a C.E. Jennings #3, at 27" on the inside, with three drawers. See, I knew it was something special!
Anyway, here are some more pics:

Anyway, I have already started lightly cleaning her up, and the wood underneath is gorgeous. I plan to just clean, hit with clear shellac, new pulls, and maybe some felt lining. Probably keep vintage wood and machining tool in it.

Nice old box - love the hardware on it! I will have to post some photos of the wooden box and misc tools a customer gave my that was her late husband's. I don't think it has any identifying hardware on it like yours though.

BMW: that old box definitely would have caught my attention. It doesn’t have to be a Gertsner to have the look or value. No hurry but when you get a few pics of it cleaned up please post those too. Nice find.

I posted this in the Garage Sale thread as well:
After some household chores and getting ribs into the smoker I was able to get Wednesday's FBM pickup out of the car and into the shop. It was advertised as a "Craftsman tool box",which when I arrived we were dodging a monsoon,an unruly dog, behind a fence and we managed the transaction over the fence gate. The "Craftsman" part bugged me as I saw no obvious logo/badge in a quick look. Thursday after work, before dodging later thunderstorms and tornadoes I got a closer look. turns out that it's a Gerstner O41B,now with the plate missing from the lower drawer I can only estimate based upon "The Guide" a date range of 1942 to 1959. So far it is cleaning up pretty well .Some interesting tool finds, the round TUIT,30 and out button, and the Imperial knife. While cleaning up I found several catalog ads for "Craftsmen's" chest, which is how I believe the seller arrived at the brand/ad header. I'm not sure how clean I am going to get this one,but I will most likely stop long before a full on refinish as I never seem to complete them.My Union B-20 still un-assembled will attest to that.

I picked this up a while back thinking it was a Stanley 851
53226580353_a5741377b1_b.jpg
I knew the door was in need of repair, and it is in the process of being fixed, but you can get a good idea of how it is laid out.
53238050754_07b804b3fa_b.jpg
here you get a shot of the inside.
53236817932_cedcb4d759_b.jpg
all of the furniture is definitely pre-war, but the pull on the drawer doesn't match any Stanley that I have seen. In any case I plan on fixing it up, and storing more vintage woodworking stuff in it. I do wonder who made it, as I wasn't in any catalog I have seen.

Here's a rather nice wood tool cabinet, not mine, it's for sale on ebay uk but thought i would grab some pics for interest.
It's an 'Army and Navy' cabinet and i guess made around 1910.
I got the picture of the label from another one sold

The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd were formed in 1871 by a group of army and navy officers. It was their intention to supply “articles of domestic consumption and general use to its members at the lowest numerative rates”. The first store opened on 15 February 1872 at Victoria Street, London.
The stores in London survived until 2005 when they were 'rebranded'

Nice. I am familiar with the Army and Navy Co-operative Society Limited, but only from my fathers firearm collection. I didn't realize they sold woodworking tools.

Until I looked up Wikipedia about them I didn't realise they had sold firearms!
I only knew them as a massive chain of department stores, with a good quality reputation.

If you are interested Farmer J, there is a reprint of the 1907 A&N catalog,

An old thread I made about our wooden workbench made by a man named Paul I inherited when I bought his house.

In post #597 of this thread I showed a wooden machinist chest that I made in about 2012.

Today I put the finishing touches on a riser chest that I built for the original box.

This started as an idea to use a bunch of red oak offcuts that I was tried of storing. I bought one board to make the three drawer fronts and need one other due to a mistake (design change).
IMG_4037.jpeg

The two top drawers
IMG_4028.jpeg

The bottom drawer. Still deciding what to put where. May still make a sliding till like my original chest.

Posted in the GS thread last weekend, but it belongs here as well. Picked up this 1924ish Pillliod ,cheap at a sale. No front cover and likely to need a recover in leatherette..someday. Edited for clarity.

Gorgeous!
Sign and date those somewhere for posterity.
...and so GJ'ers fifty years from now aren't trying to figure out who made it! :)

Nice find, Andy! I see what you mean. That's like the old strip and repaint or preserve call for steel boxes. Very subjective, no right or wrong. For me, even with the fraying and it coming loose like that it's still well to the left of the line between 'Well-worn but still enhancing the handsome overall appearance' and 'Raggedy and diminishing the unsightly overall appearance'. But everyone's line is different. For me, "It's only original once!" weighs heavily in decision making.

Not very exciting but a few more I have. Not cabinets or boxes but vessels I keep stuff in in the garage.
First one is a bread delivery box I use for wiring harnesses and lights and stuff like that.
Second is a dynamite crate I epoxies. It holds boxes of screws & nails and similar hardware.
