Building a new set I purchased these (separately) by 6:00AM New Year's Day. No "deals" in the batch. They FINALLY arrived, but FedEx seems to like the last one I got because they have it somewhere in their own Bermuda Triangle.

Blue Point short DBE series.

I visited an antiques mall this morning and only came away with these.

DSCF9780R.jpg

A full box of 100 aluminium 5/32" pop rivets and a deeply cranked 7/16" BSF single ended ring spanner. Nothing special until you turn it over.

DSCF9781R.jpg

UK Govt. property mark, part number and an indistinct what I take to be an inspection stamp. Unusually for Govt. property tools there is no date. I assume that it is well into the jet age but I've no idea for which engine(s) it was intended. I just can't resist such things! £10 for the two items.

First estate sale in 2024 for me last Friday. Pictures in the ad didn't show many tools but there was some golf equipment so I took the 15 minute ride to take a look. The neighborhood is higher end Toll Brothers homes (already sold for 850k) which are always nice to check out plus you never know what you'll find. I arrived about 8:20 for a 9am opening since this company usually opens early. Approximately 10-12 people waiting in line at the front door, which is about normal. Numbers and sign up lists are not used much (almost never) in my area but someone had posted a list at the door. I did not add my name just took my spot at the end of the line and made small talk with a few people, mostly 'regulars'. About 15 minutes go by and a few people emerge from their cars and head to the front door to check out the list. One of the guys asks who is #1, 2 ,3 & 4, he is apparently #5 on the list. #'s 1-4 are in line and waiting. Some discussion ensures amongst the group about this company not using a list and that they usually let everyone in at once rather than just a few at a time. The gentleman states he is just trying to make sure the people who got there early will be the first ones through the door. Discussion (somewhat spirited but not vulgar) continues until the folks running the sale open up and explain that they will not be using the list and everyone will be let in momentarily. After the company explains the conditions and layout of the sale, the doors open and the sale starts without further issue. Most of the buyers headed for the video games, electronics, record albums, music equipment etc. I made my way to the garage area and found some decent golf items, a Craftsman wrench & socket set, and a wrecking bar. Prices were fair and I was pleased with my finds.

I'm not very competitive at these sales but after some reflection, it seems to me that waiting in the warmth of your car while others are lined up in the weather goes against common practice and common sense, especially when the company isn't using a list. If you want to be 1st (or 5th) through the door then you need to remain in line with everyone else.
It didn't really matter that much in this case just a different 'approach' to what is usually an uneventful process.

How does it work in your area?

Here are the tool finds.
Interesting Craftsman -V- series kit, DOE wrenches, some 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch drive sockets but no drive tools or adapters. Mostly complete, just missing 3 sockets which I may have in my stash.
Wrecking bar is USA made (according to the sticker) and appears unused.

Here in MI the sale I go to are advertised on estatesales.net . Most all have terms and conditions regarding lists/street numbers/etc. Not all sales are the same. But if a company posts their terms and doesn't accept "street numbers" the folks staying warm in the car are welcome to enter right after anyone currently in the line.

Here in SA, during COVID, the lists were sacrosanct and you could be wherever you wanted until the agent came out to read the next few names. Only a few companies are still using signup lists these days, but it works the same way--if you want to sit in your car until your time comes, go ahead--but if you're not standing there as soon as your name is called you lose out on your entry. Nobody here lines up if there is a list and nobody uses a list if there is a line. The two should be mutually exclusive.

This morning's frozen flea finds (Lugz 2024_02) include an antique tools guide (Barlow) and a Klein kleaver. I doubt I will get much use out of the book, since I am not really a sawdust maker or a sawdust makers' tools collector, but it will go in the reference library unless someone such as our host (first dibs) is yearning to have it. This is my second lineman's chopper. The first, found a few years ago, was made by Utica and marked BELL SYSTEM B. I suspect this one with the plastic handle is barely vintage. If you've never held one of these, they are small but very heavy. Good for cleaning small game.

LEFT-BEHINDs include a book I snapped a pic of just for our old passive RF pal @Old Radar (postwar, wet, stained, and falling apart) and an antique vulcanizer (tire patcher) (more than I wanted to spend)

Had a busy morning, but there was a sale that had some interesting things in the pictures, so I ventured out this PM. This company has a fairly expensive first day, but discounts heavily on the second and third day, so I don't usually hit them until the second at least. But it seems alot of the stuff I was interested other people were also interested in: mill vises, Proto body hammers, and so on. But I did find a few things
53460261398_05d98d15e2_b.jpg
Some brace bits, Yankee type bits in the pouch, and an old breaker bar. Why would I grab an old breaker bar, you ask? Well:

Welp, I had several interesting stops planned for the day, but the valley seems to be shutting down due to an ice storm. Don't know if that is truly the case, but with internet weather reporting, everyone freaks out so much as to make it true.

Pretty much a rainout here. light buy constant drizzle. I went to the local Col FM, (only thing :Open", and it had maybe ten vendors, 4 selling plants, the rest were the usual junk sellers. and of course instead of tightening the space a bit everyone was scattered from one end of the available space to the other, including into the adjacent "Overflow" parking lot) I'm not sure who is dumber, the vendors for parking way out yonder, or the people running the FM for not closing parts of the availsble space.

So after several "laps" I got a nice walk out of it; 3/4 of a mile, 4 "heart points" according to my phone. But that was all. a few were still setting up as I left and it was over a dozen, but I peaked into the vehicles and more junk sellers, so I walked back to the car and drove home.

Having been a seller at a flea market before, you rent an assigned spot. If you moved closer to your neighbor, you'd be on somebody else's spot. Usually there are no refunds, so those spots are paid for wether or not the seller shows up. So that's why they are all spaced out weird.

I can see that at a regular FM, but I'd expect Col and HS fleas to be first come first served, and I've seen enough vendors moved around that its likely that way. Certainly they have staff walking the place and collecting fees. I see it all the time.

I know as a weekend warrior (decades ago), we were simply lined up and assigned in order we were in line. This was at one of the largest Fleas in the country. Only the people that "bought a space" had assigned spaces. and those were in a different area.

I would guess that those vendor simply drive in and pick a spot and plop down. They don't care, and the people running the show are hoping that more people show up.

But, yeah, I have seen the same thing happen at the drive-in swap in Concord.

Comes to $38 each, average but one has what I consider serious damage. I don';t thing the pricing is terrible but before you decide, what re they worth to you, are you a collector, do you have space for 6 tool boards, (ore more of you get into them) and can/will you fill them or try?

I have 2 boards collecting dust and hard to store (no wall space) I should probably sel those...

Not a tool board collector, but at those prices, seems reasonable. Use it vs hold it vs flip it, should work for any of those.

Flipping can be hard, as they are a pain to ship.

I use a few as generic tool storage (hold all kinds of brands for identical tools, like combo wrenches or screwdrivers).

Hard to see needing that many identical sockets unless you are "staging" it.

Logo means a lot, when it comes to Proto tool boards, so unless you collect later Professional era, I would say pass. But, if you do collect that era, then it is a pretty good deal for a lot of boards at once.

I’d bring them home at that price. Just me, but I’d remove the pegs and use them as wallpaper. I know it’s heresy on here to not try to fill tool boards, but I could never live with the unfinished look. “I just need an 1134, an 2002, and a 68S” is great inside a drawer or box. Not so much on the wall.

Interesting that dealers were expected to keep 3 4-ways in stock.

Made it out to an estate sale this morning, only 10 min or so from the house which is always nice. Missed out on a nice Kennedy Machinist chest and a heritage era 1/4 Craftsman socket box (dunno what was in it) which were the main reasons I went but still managed to drop $50 on a bunch of stuff...

Opened this taiwan socket set and was happy to see all the Craftsman =v= 1/4 inch stuff (top of lid). Interestingly the breaker is Circle H and I have a feeling that was what was in the heritage 1/4 box that I missed  The rest of it is Taiwan made and will go to goodwill.
IMG_5182.jpg

Grabbed another random Craftsman plastic case and found a bunch of VA metric combos and some other random =v= stuff.
IMG_5183.jpg

Most of a 1/2" =v= ratchet set, pretty much just missing the 3/4 deep socket and probably a longer extension.
IMG_5184.jpg

=v= DBE set and DOE set missing one wrench
IMG_5185.jpg

More =v= stuff, all 3/8" except for the 1/4" pear head rat. The non USA rat will probably end up donated to a buddy or goodwill.
IMG_5186.jpg

Some of the random stuff that was in the 1/2" tray...I got a kick out of the luggage tag with the holo dancing lady :ROFLMAO:
IMG_5187.jpg

And more random stuff. Penens DBEs, Proto clutch driver, Plomb war finish DBE and 1/4" driver and wobbler. VlChek DOE, Bluepoint DBE's, Snap on extension, combos, socket, and Vacuum grip pliers (not sure what they're for). Stuff on the right is a mishmash.

Nice haul, Saukit. If you are looking for a Kennedy box, I have several down here, I would be up for a trade at some point. I should be heading your way in a few months, so keep that idea fresh.

Thanks @JohnDeere ! I never would have figured that out on my own!

Appreciate the offer Beemer but I have more machinist boxes than I can handle at the moment, I was mostly interested in what was inside it! That being said if you're up here I'd definitely be up to trade...hell you can dig around in my stash and see if there's anything you can't live without :ROFLMAO:

Damn, I was hoping to get rid of a chest or two...

Yeah, I buy them for the same reason, to get what is inside of them. I will give you a holler when I am up that way.

We took advantage of a brief break in the rain to check out a couple of estate sales. The Oakland one I wanted to check out first had a long line even though it had been open for 45 minutes so we went to my second choice at an upscale neighborhood in Piedmont. We found quite a few tools there although the Perfect Handle screwdrivers I saw pictures of were gone. There was a few Craftsman pieces, two Cornwell combo wrenches, a Proto Professional adjustable and a Diamalloy fencing tool, my first. My favorite was the 3/8” drive Cornwell ratchet.

IMG_2562.jpeg

By the time we returned to the first sale the line was shorter so we waited to get in. There was a buyer who had bought most of the tools so we scouted around for leftovers. Didn’t find much. The safety wire pliers were interesting but I couldn’t find a brand. I bought the almost empty DeWalt box for the adapter and I couldn’t leave the hose nozzle behind.

IMG_2555.jpeg
Here are some of the tools cleaned up.
