It's been said before--it's never a bad idea to take a moment to see what is really in the cheap Taiwanese socket set box you have no intention of buying.
In this case, it was a Proto (Mfg) rat, a bunch of miscellaneous era Craftsman tools and sockets, a couple of JC Penny sockets and one from Indestro. Total: $3. Of course, it didn't look this good when I first opened it...

But the real prize was the freebee. A German Silver protractor (marked in 1/4 degrees!) by Theodore Alteneder and stamped "U.S.C.E." which I take to mean U.S. Corps of Engineers.
Alteneder was a Philadelphia manufacturer of precision drafting and drawing instruments with several patents to his name.
Here is his 1892 "Catalogue" on archive.org with the listing for his protractors.
@RTM picked up and posted a handful of what look to be Alteneder's patented dividers back in the 2021 Garage Sale Thread.

My first online purchase of the year early morning New Year’s Day pick was cancelled and refunded, so my previous prelude to such is now null and void.

Now, my freebie Kennedy boxes I posted about hoping to be the most expensive free pick ever is possibly coming to fruition.

Verbal negotiations are headed to paper.

Really torqued up for this one folks.

(And yes, it qualifies as an estate sale pick)

Estate sale ($140): Taekwondo gloves & boots; Dragon wind chime; 1927 Corona 4 typewriter w/ case; 3" State Univ. Iowa vise ($165); 8' x 10' canvas tarp; Ouija board; Steel wool, bulbs; Shaler 5 minute vulcanizer; Bristle brush; Yankee no. 41 push-drill; Rheingold bottle opener; Lufkin no. 4 grad. combination square; ($35) Stanley 61-007 / Hurwood 7A scratch awl; 2 - Tape measures, 10ft Durall Ezy-Read No. 910, and a 6ft Carlson Chief No. 226; Sabre saw blades.

Some nice pieces. Went through a snow and wind chill warning. The priced items was a super nice 3" State Univ. Iowa vise for $45. The second, was the Corona typewriter for $35. Came with the case and key. I'm ordering a replacement ribbon and spool from a place in Chicago, but the action seems good so fingers crossed as it's super fun to bang around on and I don't even have a ribbon. The Ouija board (1950-1960) was a dig and find and predates the Parker Bros. editions. Tons of mojo. My wife and kids make me keep it in the garage and I'm ok with that. The Lufkin combination square came with the scribe and a working glass. Lastly, two more pocket tape measures for the collection. A nice Carlson Chief with black/steel numbering and a brass Durall w/ traditional b/w numbering. Oh and the 8'x10' tarp, with heavy duty brass grommets and reinforced corners. It's funny how you can walk by such nice things and not even notice them.

Lots of nice pieces there CT! The vise and typewriter are the obvious ones, but the canvas tarp also stands out for me. Most would not have looked twice.

Me and the Mrs. went to look at a property today. In one of the sheds were some empty toolboxes. I told the owner I would like to buy them and he said just to take them. So I did, but hopefully they’ll be the most expensive boxes I’ve ever “bought”. Need to clean up the mouse droppings but most of the original felt is in great condition. (I’ll try thumbnail pictures this time)

I'm very jealous of your nice grab of that green Kennedy Kits box. I have what I suspect is the exact same model that's been passed down a few generations, but is in quite poor shape. I pull it out about once a year to decide if I'm going to restore it, but It always seems to far gone. Hopefully you put yours to great use!

That vise is really cool - do you have any idea of the story behind it?

And that Hurwood awl looks just about brand new - nice find!

a super nice 3" State Univ. Iowa vise...
Terrific find! There are probably a few guys right here on this thread who could identify the OEM on the vise, but for sure on the Mega Vise thread. Not that it matters. The cool part is the marking and its implicit provenance. Question, though. The phrasing is a little odd. Do you think that was originally in an M.E. lab somewhere at Iowa State? Or the University of Iowa? They are both public, "state" schools, right? My first thought was older formulation of Iowa State University, but the yellow lettering on black body suggests Hawkeyes, no?

I remember when taking a ME course that one of the things we did was casting something of our own. Perhaps this vise was a class or personal project?

Excellent finds, ctuai! What I love about your posts is the variety of what you bring back. Not just content with tools, you have a whole plethora of finds, across the board. Ouija Board, in this case.

I was thinking along these lines. Maybe they took an existing, commercially available vise to create the mold (and changed the logo)?

It's possible. Regardless if classroom project or lab surplus, the ambiguous phraseology of the marking seems to match the age of that bench vise, which is a prewar pattern.

Hmmm. You mean like taking an existing research report and changing the name on the title page? What professor would be impressed with that?

Dimensional shrinkage should be able to verify that. If you find a shape match.

Over the course of years, universities will change their names. The local uni went from Oregon Agricultural College (OAC), to Oregon State University as it's mission changed.

If the lesson was to take an inanimate object, and create a mold for an exact replica accounting for casting shrinkage, then I can see that being a very good project.

Nah. It still shows up in 1966 entries in Google Books

"Mason Ladd (23BA), dean of the State University of Iowa College of Law, anticipated this situation in 1957, when officials at Ames proposed renaming that campus. Ladd, in a Dec. 7, 1957, memo to SUI president Virgil Hancher (18BA, 24JD, 64LLD), pointed out that changing the Ames campus name to Iowa State University would be an “unconstitutional act. … Furthermore, it would involve great confusion in our statutes and require material revision in wording throughout the Code where either the State College or the University are mentioned.” (Papers of Mason Ladd, Box 6, folder “Brief – SUI Change of Name”) Apparently, President Hancher did not pursue Dean Ladd’s objection—or if he did was not successful—and ISC became ISU in 1959.

By 1964, the name confusion that Ladd predicted became reality, frustrating SUI officials. Howard Bowen (35PhD), by then president of the Iowa City campus, had an answer: Shorten the name of SUI in everyday usage to the University of Iowa, while retaining its full, original name for legal and other purposes. On Oct. 22, 1964, the Board of Regents approved a resolution authorizing just that (Board of Regents minutes, Oct. 21–24, 1964, pages 170–171)." https://www.foriowa.org/iowa-stories/iowa-story.php?namer=true&isid=3

Indeed.

Since there is rain in the forecast for the next three days, we headed to a couple of sales in Walnut Creek. At the first sale all the tools with marked prices were ridiculously high so I found items that hadn’t been priced. That seemed to work out well since the person at the checkout just looked in my bag and quoted a reasonable price. The drill index turned out to be from Japan but was a decent copy The file cards were a little more modern than I usually look for but were in excellent condition. The dykes are Wilde, the doe Plomb, the combos are Lectrolite and the punches are unmarked. I particularly liked the looks of the General file handle IMG_2660.jpeg
Some individual pictures. IMG_2662.jpegIMG_2664.jpegIMG_2666.jpegIMG_2667.jpegIMG_2668.jpeg
The second sale was put on by a company known for high prices. I usually avoid them but we were in the neighborhood. I actually found a couple of reasonably priced hacksaws and a shelf for displaying tools in the basement. IMG_2676.jpeg
The upper hacksaw is a pretty nice Millers Falls that I added a blade toIMG_2681.jpeg
The wood handle hacksaw was a brand I wasn’t familiar with, Willard Saw Co.IMG_2678.jpeg

I have a later Colton's, too, Don, but yeah, they were being made in that pattern since 1936. The coolest thing about them might be the name. It's the same outfit famous among vise collectors for a nifty and rather desirable tiny combination bench and hand vise. "The Curator" did a little deep dive on the vise, the file cleaner, and the company here, if you're interested in reading further.

Wow, that was quite a figurin' out on the vise. I put the yellow on. It's actually, "mellow yellow" nail polish courtesy of my daughter. It was originally Cyclones "cherry bomb" red, but I was corrected on the Vise thread and hence Hawkeyes "mellow" yellow.

On the typewriter front a Corona 4 spool has been located at Typewriter Chicago and along with a cotton black/red ribbon I shall soon begin the Great Garage Sale Thread novel. "It was a dark and stormy night as I peered into the inky black garage, when suddenly a flash of lightning blinked into existence..."

I live in a mostly white-collar town, so this is surprisingly common. Anyone remember my free snow blower from last year? It only needed a $3 spring (and some gas) to start and run. If this guy had been a neighbor, I'd have wheeled the generator right back up his driveway. But instead, I'll flip it and hopefully have it sold in a week and put the proceeds into the woodshop fund.
Or less if my wife sees this. PM sent...

Hand off complete! It was great to meet another fellow GJGS thread regular in person. We chatted a bit about picking, making piles in your garage you have to walk around, and traded tips on flipping finds and renting/buying yard tractors! I could have talked longer, but the sub-freezing air was starting to nibble at my ears. Pleasure to meet you, @mikeinri, and if I ever spot a juicy estate sale down your way, I'll send up a signal flare!

Found this tool cart for sale on FB marketplace. I spend too much time looking, but had a good feeling about this one. I saw the BluePoint air impact and knew I would come out OK. The toolbox was a 7 drawer with top lid couldn’t figure out a brand, but for $200 it would work 1705676784072.png
Here’s the loot hiding in the toolbox and a broken plastic box the seller wanted to get rid of. These tools were apparently their son’s, but I didn’t ask any more of the story.

Toolbox is a Homak service cart that’s in decent shape. Looks like it’s been sitting outside for a while, but will clean up ok. One or two spots of rust on panels, but nothing that affects the structure. Notable tools are 4 ratchets (1 JR30, 1 long Matco 88, 1 FLLF80, 1 SnapOn locking flex head 36tooth), deep well 1/2” SnapOn impact sockets (some very rusted, I will try applying new oxide coating to some), Cornwell digital 1/2” torque wrench, a fair amount of technician type tools (brake kits, sensor sockets, etc) Cornwell/Mountain ratcheting wrenches. Lots of import wrenches and misc tools. I’ve been looking for a cart to move around the garage and also take to the track on the weekends. I’ll try using this one for a bit and see how I like it. It might be a bit too big, but time will tell.

Ditto!

Thanks for letting me pick your brain. I live well south of you, so if you spot something you'd like me to pick up for you, let me know!

When I get my Terramite backhoe running, I'll let you know, maybe I can help you out.
