Builders Surplus? Good Deals or Not?

Does anybody have any experience with Builders Surplus? They have these really annoying commercials here in the Atlanta area but they have locations in several other large cities across the U.S.

I'm wondering if they are just another Home Depot / Lowes type store or are their prices actually lower?

Yea, here they call the place Mr 2nds, and the bastards have 2 bargains in a warehouse full of **** and busted junk. They even carry factory reconditioned power tools and sub Harbor Flotsum quality junk. The best part, their prices are HIGH considering the quality.

Manufacturers in today's economy simply do not make overruns.

I'd go take a look at it. Like Franz©, there is a local place here that is similar - Big Ugly Warehouse. On the surface it looks like they should have better prices, but when you look at what they have and start comparing prices you can get better deals elsewhere. I think they survive on marketing - people go in there thinking they must be getting a deal and never bother looking elsewhere...

Thanks guys. That is what I figured. I'm always skeptical of commercials / marketing gimmicks. I figured I'd ask around first before I wasted any gas just to be disappointed.

a friend of mine hits lowes and home depot every day looking for the clearance stuff or the ding/scratch stuff. he will buy anything as long as he can get it for 20 cents on the dollar. he has a barn he puts it in and then uses the stuff to redo houses that he buys. the guy can take a piece of junk house and make it look new in 1-2 months.
he always suprises me with the deals he gets because he goes there every day.

I have done about the same thing but on a smaller scale (I go by once a week and buy only things I need for my house) last purchase was a $900 fancy bathroom vanity with granite top and even the sink. $400 and then a brushed nickel faucet that was $150 for $40 (someone bought it and looks like they started to install it and the returned it with the box and all looking like a mess.

I comment with first hand knowledge, currently a part timer at a local -> Mr. 2nds Bargain Outlet

You should definitely stop by and check out what's available, as with these places there is always new stuff coming in. And it's not only Manufacturers with overruns, it is also the Lowes and Home Depots that merchandise is acquired from. Granted, some of it may be junk, but there is also alot of good building materials that you can save $$$ on.

We just got in a truckload of interior and exterior entry doors from none other than Home Depot, for example: stanley pre hung steel 36" 9-lite door $88.

I have acquired windows, door, roofing, tar paper, nails, screws, paint brushes, drywall from there for my garage and saved a ton of $$$ (the discount helps too though)

We are a construction co & buy from there whenever they have what we need. They seem to have a little of everything, but you never know what they'll have. Great prices!

Been a few years since I've been to a Builder's Surplus. We were remodeling our kitchen and saw an ad for cabinets and counter tops at great prices. The store in Brea / La Habra, Ca. has mostly broken stuff and/or odd sizes.

Here in DFW, our versions of this type of store are "Seconds & Surplus" and "Builders Surplus". From my experience, their prices are comparable to Home Depot and Lowe's for many things (especially doors & cabinets). However, when I was looking for an insert for my back door Builders Surplus had them in stock for about 5-10 dollars cheaper than Home Depot (which required special order) and Lowes tried to get me to buy a whole new door. So before you pass judgement, you should go and take a look to see what they have that may suit your needs. It can't hurt to go look.

Builders Surplus in Atlanta is not associated with any store in California...Everyone needs to do their research before bad mouthing a company that is independently owned and has nothing to do with any store in California or the other places people have mentioned. The name "Builders Surplus" is very generic so lots of different companies use the name.

Advice to all people in Atlanta...DON'T listen to the people who are lying and making stuff up!
