I'll just pour old used up Evaporust into it (the ole red USMC gas can) until I fill it up and see if the rust situation improves.
If not, I'll just keep it around filled with sand as a curio

Good Friend gave me an ole gas can

US marked and USMC on the bottom, which is cool
It was holding smelly gas and the inside is rusty.

....too bad

Not Marine Corps but made in 1980. When you cut it apart you will find that it’s 20 gauge (except for the rusty area)

Didn't include this as I figured the headlight core wasn't worth showing, but was incorrect: 1963 OEM Corvette headlamp motor core (7 63 5045371):

we are now under contract to do just that, make it ours. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom rancher

The Ultimate Garage Sale find!

go ahead and cut into that gas can, get a read on how thick the sheet metal is.

I knew that was coming!
Couldn't that be fixed with POR-15 or something similar?

Something that big I'd give it a hot citric acid soak. Once the rust is out adn its clean, Use as is. (Preferably right away)

Found this at the flea market for $5.

I literally have no use for this but I'm a tool lover/addict. Picked up the pass through ratchet and love it. So I decided it needed to come home and hang out with all the other gathered tools of its ilk.

It also had a random OTC tie rod adjustment tool in the box.

Mac VRF Specialty Front End Alignment Flex Ratchet Socket Set. From the 70s? (I have no idea)

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but when I think of an evidence photograph of what the police found in the trunk of a serial killer….this is what I imagine.

Wow... Who needs duct tape or zip ties when you have string lights!!!???

OK, maybe we've seen one too many episodes of "Forensic Files..."

Since when is ‘having a use for it’ a prerequisite for a tool purchase? 🤪😜 $5 is a ‘yes please’ every time!! Nice find.

I am quoting my own post from Jan. 7 for the simple reason that I stated, "but hopefully they’ll be the most expensive boxes I’ve ever “bought”." Now it is time to let the cat out of the bag as to why I said that.

These toolboxes are part of an estate that has been unoccupied for the past 3 years. The family took only a couple sentimental items for themselves, and apparently a small collection of old toys that were auctioned off for expenses, and they left the rest. ALL of the rest. The day I acquired these toolboxes is the second time me and the Mrs. went to look over this place, with the intention of buying it.

Well, we are now under contract to do just that, make it ours. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom rancher with a full unfinished basement, a 10 x 20 shed, a 3 stall block built stable/barn with a 2nd floor, and 3.6 acres. It is exactly 5 minutes from our current home and you would never even know it was there. How does this apply to the GS forum you ask? Well, it is full of tools! Including, but not limited to a '58 International dump truck, a late '30's International Deuce & a half, and a '59 Mercury Monterey 2 door. Mowers, tillers, power tools, a kiln, and stuff I can't even get to.

The house will take us 2-3 months to get it able to occupy we figure and I can only imagine what we will find when we do the clean out. It will be our project for the next year, and probably the rest of our lives, but we'll basically be doubling our estate net worth for our kids & grandkids for when we kick it, which is very important to me. It is definitely a "fixer upper" and the land is in need of some serious attention. One big oak has to come down immediately, but the trunk (if not rotted inside) will be more than enough to make 2 mantles for both sides of the through fireplace.

We've been mad scrambling to get our current home ready to sell, it goes on the market on 2/21 and there are already showings lined up. We live in a very desirable townhouse community and they sell fast. My brother in law has a home 7 miles from us and has an in law suite that he has offered to us for as long as we need to get the house ready.

So...this is why I've been scarce here, because I've been a tad busy. Smokeshow & alinc, put my piles off to the side for now, I haven't forgot you have stuff for me. Give me a few months because all my trade stuff is buried in storage right now.

I'll post up tools and other interesting finds as I dig them up, but most important is the house and LAND. I figure most folks here can look past the hoard and see the bones and big picture like we have of the amazing potential of this property. We're hoping to take possession by the end of March. Thanks for letting me ramble folks.

** well, that looks like a heck of a good find! I like how you have some breathing room and room to build a shop! I’m saving your trade bait no problem! Can’t wait to see what you do with the place**
The results will blow you away!
It’s hard to “gauge “ how people will react to measuring of Jerry cans. But if anyone can do it, it’s this crowd 😆👍

The green oval Singer was a new design that I didn’t have so it was a nice addition.
We have a Singer/SIMANCO thread down on the Vintage Tools Discussion forum, if you're interested. Not just oilers, though there are a few posted. You can find a link in the A-Z Index in the Sticky at the top of that forum.

I did okay this morning.

2024_07 1.jpg

- The duckbills are M. Klein & Sons with a 1940 date code.

- The tool above that with the oversized asymmetric head is a Smith & Hemenway "Giant-Grip". They were advertised as plier-wrenches in the 20's and 30's. The first one I have ever seen in the wild. There are only two on GJ and @LesserSon has one of them, found at his flea, which is less than 100 miles from my flea, and first reported here on the GS thread last March. Elated to add it to the S&H/Red Devil collection in my Red Devil box.

The front cover of that photo album (lots of B&W Alps inside) belies the Occupied Germany provenance that the back cover reveals. Third Army (Patton in command) left in 1947.

70's era is correct. We used to have one of those in the cabinet of our alignment rack at the dealership. It was the preferred tool to get to the upper control arm bolts on the rear wheel drive GM cars of the 60's to 80's. I used to borrow it when I'd head to an Autocross with my Camaro or Firebird on the weekend. It was a quick, convenient way to avoid greasy and ****** knuckles when shimming some negative camber in the front wheels for an event, then returning to neutral before heading home. I bought one on ebay in the late 90's and paid a bit more than five bucks.

@gleman ***** for very successfully raiding the ReStore! The <W> gear, especially the 3/4” dr. stuff was a steal. Don’t remember when Williams stopped marking their tools with the <W>, sometime shortly after WW2, IIRC.

Man, I would have been all over those Williams 3/4" sockets. I have the box and ratchet for that set!
I'm going back tomorrow to search again as there was a bunch of stuff all over the place and it took me 30 minutes to sort that out!

There were Sears - non Craftsmans DOEs and some KTC(?) Wrenches and Wizards and Actions that I might grab.

I guess I broke my tool dry spell!
