Chicago properties have high prop tax and generally dont appreciate in value.
The first part can be true but is in line with any other major metropolis. The neighboring suburbs have higher property taxes, honestly. The second part is most certainly false.
There are plenty of options for your budget but I don’t think they’d be appealing to you. A good number of vacant mechanic garages and small warehouses in the industrial districts that could be repurposed. McKinley Park, Brighton Park, Back of the Yards. You’d have to be familiar with the area to make a sound decision though.
In your case, I wouldn’t want to deal with the headaches of buying and property sterwardship. Nor would I want to rent a residential garage and risk the owner getting curious with my car. I’d pay for collector car storage, depending on the value of your vehicle. Seems like the easiest, least stressful option.
If you want to cruise downtown, get something as close to downtown as possible. Otherwise you’ll have to deal with inbound traffic to start your drive. Evanston to the loop on a weekend afternoon is 45 minutes, for example.
What is generally unsafe area in chicago? From my research, anything south, west and northwest is bad and only saving grace is north loop all the way to the Evanston. Or really far into suburbs.
Depends on what you call unsafe. Odds are you wouldn’t ever end up those ways by accident .. comiskey park and university of Chicago are the biggest attractions that would involve venturing to unsafe areas.
Personally, I feel fine working in all kinds of crazy areas during the daytime, but I avoid the entire city after dark.
