The web site lists 50% off, plus an additional 15% discount for the 49 pc and 75 pc sets.

The 15% discount fine-print terms say it does not apply to sale items, but the website lists it on the product page anyway. The discount doesn't show up on the final checkout page.

I called, and it took about 15 minutes to research and place the order by phone. And I'm still taking a risk that the manual refund of the difference won't be applied later.

I went in today to get some ratcheting wrenches. Salesman told me that only one set was on sale and he showed me the add with the sku. I then pointed out that 1/2" away it says all gearwrench on sale for 50% off. Salesman stated he could see how that would be confusing, and that he would make it right.

I think that it helped that we went to high school together, otherwise I don't think he would have honored the 50% off.

if you order online from the store kiosk, you get 10% off automatically and free shipping to your house. at least that's how it was a few months ago. not sure if that 10% will apply to a 50% off item. that gearwrench stuff seems nice, but we just had that discussion about craftsman going to china in an adjacent thread.. i can't bring myself to buy it now. will seem like a hypocrite.

Well, it *should* but that doesn't mean much. If your Sears has it in store, I'm sure you can convince the manager that it needs to be part of the sale.

As for the set itself, I have the metric set and have used it a couple of times. The shafts are not hollow if that matters to you, but otherwise it seems fine. The driver part is the same stubby that is in a lot of other sets and it is great. I must admit that I hardly ever use nutdrivers though.

heres what i picked up today. roto-ratchets and the 56 piece screwdriver set. paid $50 total. both are marked taiwan with the screwdrivers sayin made in taiwan for danaher tool group and the rotos showing made in taiwan with danaher listed underneath it. wish i had some more money i could spend this weekend to pick up more stuff but i know there will be future sales. just gotta wait and watch

also, in the store i stopped at everything gearwrench was clearly marked as being on sale and half off. the rotos weren't tagged so i was kinda worried i'd get some static over em but they rang up on sale with no problems as well.

They make a dandy short ratchet/socket combo for places where a standard ratchet & short socket are a little too large, and they're not nearly as expensive as buying separate sets of extra short sockets.

I checked in store stock before going to the store. They had plenty this morning so wasn't worried. I did however buy the 46pc Thru Ratchet set and then a little while ago I bought the 56 pc ratcheting screwdriver set. I'll pick them up in the morning

Picked me up the 49 pc vortex set for $25. They had 1 set of roto ratchets left. Lots of ratcheting wrenches, including the x-force for only 39.99 i believe. I wanted to keep it under 40 and was stuck between the metric or sae ratcheting x-beam, stubbies, or regulars and stumbled upon this pass-thru set which i thought was neat and cheap and i liked it so i bought it. My favorite part is i basically bought 2 ratchets for the price, check out my 3rd pic (i hit the max on my photobucket account... again! so only attached pics for awhile)

the 75 i think has less sockets than the 49, its just a bunch of bits and such, and it only comes with 1 ratchet but that one ratchet is a flex ratchet vs. the 2 that come with the 49.

Yeah, but everything is more expensive these days...

The non-reversibles and stubbies used to be $60/set ($30 on the 50% off deals), the reversibles were $70/set ($35 on sale), the flex-heads were $80/set ($40 on sale) when I bought all of mine.

Now they're all about $10 more per set.

That said, they've been at the current price point for close to a couple years now.

I bought both the 49 and 75 pc sets today, and was fondling them this evening.

Both are nice sets, but the 49 pc one has the edge. The whole set is hole-through 'Vortex' tools, with both 1/4" and 3/8" equivalents.

The 75 pc set has only the 17 socket 3/8" drive equivalents, exactly the same set as the larger sockets in the 49 pc set. But it doesn't have any of the smaller sockets or ratchet handle. The single flex ratchet is nicer than the two ratchets in the 49 pc set.

The remainder of the sockets, besides the 17 Vortex sockets, consists of standard square drive 1/4" and 3/8" sockets. They are nice enough, with pretty chrome inside and out. But I'm guessing every one here already has regular sockets. Likely a few sets, perhaps even dozens.

The rest of the 75 pc set count is a precision screwdriver set. Quite nice, but basically a standard set. They are unrelated to the Vortex sockets, and smaller tools. I could understand a set with e.g. 1/4" hex drive #2 and #3 Phillips bits, in an attempt to make it look like a general purpose tool kit. But this is a miniature set that starts at #1 and goes smaller to #00. Completely off scale. At least they are isolated in their own case.

Bottom line: the special aspect of this set is the Vortex sockets. For people here, the 49 pc set has all of the ones from the 75 pc set, and more. And it has only Vortex sockets, without duplicating standard tools you likely already have.
