@fouckhest, I had do do a song and dance to get that mix from the local welding supply place. I tried TIG with 100% Argon but I zapped myself a couple of times feeding the stainless rod into the puddle. A sweaty stump inside a prosthesis socket makes a decent conductor, as does the braided stainless cable that actuates the stainless hook.

I figured your prosthesis had a lot to do with it, seems like it would be a tricky equation to get right.

Did you ever try pure argon with the MIG?

I used the pure argon as the back purge but not going to the MIG gun. The stainless MIG and TIG machines are on the same cart so there are two tanks as well.

Gotcha, I was mainly wondering from a simplification of things....However I am not sure I know the exact reason for the co2 in the MIG mix, I guess I just expected it was to "dilute" the argon...then you could have a single bottle of argon for MIG back purge/TIG welding, then standard co2/argon mix for traditional MIG for when doing carbon steel....mainly just the cost savings of not running so much pure/or almost pure argon

I'm more grinder than welder. When I was 63 I bought mt first welder, an $89 HF flux core wire feed beauty. Made header adapter pipes for the '72 Corvette and had Jet Hot coat them to match the ****** headers. It was a perfect example of lipstick on a pig.

I wanted those pipes to be stainless steel to match the Magnaflow exhaust so I searched for options. Ended up buying an Eastwood MIG machine and set it up for welding stainless based on advice from a Miller welding site (https://www.millerwelds.com/resourc...rove-results-when-mig-welding-stainless-steel):

"Too much carbon in the weld when working with stainless steel affects the material’s ability to resist corrosion. Therefore, it’s important to choose a shielding gas containing less than 5% carbon dioxide. A tri-mix gas of argon, helium and carbon dioxide is popular for MIG welding stainless steel. The specific mix of gases depends on what type of welding process you’re using. With a conventional MIG process, use a gas mix with more helium. With a pulsed MIG process, use a mix with more argon. You can also use a 98% argon and 2% carbon dioxide mix for welding stainless steel."

First project with stainless welding got a little out of hand. Turned the two-muffler Magnaflow dual exhaust into a one-muffler Frankentube exhaust with quad outlets and electric cutouts. There was no way to install it in one piece so there are four v-band clamps to make it a three section system. 'While I was at it' I made new 3-inch adapters in stainless and made my own quad outlet from the tips on the two Magnaflow mufflers. And yes, there was a fair amount of cutting and pasting fiberglass on the rear of the Corvette. Did I mention converting the car from coils up front and leaf spring out back to coilovers all around?

I swapped the Eastwood MIG from a stainless setup to a carbon steel setup and made two horrible wire nests. Decided to reduce my stress and bought a HF MIG with shielding gas setup to go on a second cart, dedicated to carbon steel welding.

That is quite the franken muffler setup for sure, I like it!!!

Very interesting on the welding gas cocktail, I know helium is a preferred shielding gas for many applications. I worked at a company that had a process to form/weld roll/strip aluminum into a tube, which was then fusion welded and drawn down around another stainless steel tube (which was also formed, fused and drawn in an earlier process with optical fibers inside), and both of those processes used pure helium as the shielding gas.

Got the last of the old/original siding off the back of the house last night, stuff is nasty, so bit the bullet, put a mask on an thrashed for about 1.5hrs and now we are down to the tar paper, ready for next week when the new board and batten will go up....looking forward to having that done...BUT...that just means the deck project will be following closely behind, womp womp

In other news, I feel like a bad garage journalist...while filing photos this morning, I realized I never posted a photo of my latest marketplace find....new to me old rockwell/delta drill press, still doesnt go as slow as I would like, but it does have the ability to be wired for either 120v or 240v, and there are two different speed ranges on the adjustment knob, so I need to put some time into understanding what can/could be changed...either way, for $250, I thought it was a solid deal

Thanks, I will likely leave it as is for now....I am in a huge "rationalize all projects" mode, taking on something else right now is nothing short of anxiety inducing lol. Right now my primary focus is keep the wife happy with progress on house projects/life and dedicate any/all other time/energy go to trying to get my widebody car on the road by this time next year

Kind a off weekend, not much for productivity, which is always good/bad....good, it was the Banff Center film festival screening, which is always fun...but its Friday/Saturday night, which means less than productive days...but always a fun time

for those who might enjoy "outdoorsy things"

However, our new cabinet for the laundry got delivered Friday, so after some Saturday morning errands, the wife and I headed to the paint store to get paint/primer....Primed it Saturday, painted yesterday....I'm not stoked on the finish from the wagner sprayer, but worst case, we pull the doors/drawers, sand and roll them if it bothers me....all in all, it looks good, going to try and get it into position tonight

Same guy that made the bathroom vanity made this one too, I wanted to try making one, but for $600, I dont think it would have been worth it

Have painted many cabinets with this -


I must say the most recent cabinets (few posts ago) we had painted by a pro in a shop and I cannot tell a difference between those and the ones I painted with the Graco. We use Benjamin Moore for most everything and it is super thick. The Graco has zero issues with it - pour and go no thinning etc.

Your pics look good to me though?

Oh wow, thats awesome Bob! Banff / Lake Louise is on our short list for ski trip next year, very excited to check out the town and mtn.

I didn't realize until we were done, there is another paint bucket/nozzle attachment that looks much more like an automotive spray gun...I wondered if it would have been a better option?

It doesn't look bad, just not perfectly smooth....I'm sure it will be fine, but next time I will try the other attachment and see if I get different results. We used Sherwin Williams, so I dont think it was the paint, more the sprayer operator LOL

I wish they had made a stop in my neck of the woods with those two Audis. They were all over my friend's social feeds...making me jealous.

Was a non-stop week in San Diego for a tradeshow for work, always fun, but exhausting....then I get home and my head and chest are a mess, still hacking up things daily....so been a low key week....BUT....in fun garage things news, my new toy showed up yesterday, like any true gearhead, I had to start digging in!

What is now the most expensive tool I've ever purchased, and maybe the most expensive shipping bill I've ever paid....(5 boxes, totaling ~515lb, which came it at ~$510, not horrible I guess)

Rogue Fab Tubing Bender! Purchased the "Tradesman Package" with upgraded hydraulic ram, cart, etc

After almost exactly 2yrs of owning the Cayman, it was time to upgrade the brakes, went with a set of Frozen Rotors, they came highly recommended, then went with Hawk HP+ pads, seem like they should be a good option for street and spirited mountain driving

ooooh fancy tubing bender should help quite a bit on the 4.2 mk4.

I love my Hawk HP+ pads on my Mk4, I ran them on my Mini Clubman also.

Good to hear on the pads, I didn't want something super noisy since I do like to take the car out and about with the wife. I ran EBC yellows on my R32, no complaints, but these came well recommended, so guess time will tell.

I am super excited to get back to work on the mk4 and start working with the tubing bender!

I had to laugh. I've owned the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V for almost 8 years and still haven't replaced the brake pads (it just turned over 19,000 miles). For me, performance was secondary. The pads that came on the car produce more brake dust than any I've ever driven. I changed out the pads on the PT Cruiser for the same reason and was very happy with the ceramic pads I chose. Seven years ago I bought Hawk Performance Ceramic pads for $225 and put them in the cabinet. Any day now I'll put them on the car.

It was noted on the PPI from the Porsche dealer before I bought the car that the rotors needed replaced, but when I got the car, the pads looked good and the lip on the rotors wasn't too concerning, so I've left them.....not to mention, the thought of dropping ~$1200-$1500 wasn't appealing right after I'd spent enough on wheels, coilovers and steering wheel with proper paddles....

That being said, he we are, just over 2yr & 5k miles later (of which 75% are hard driving miles)....I figured it was time....not to mention, the new job with sign on bonus and old job paying out my bonus from last year made it much more palatable :cool:

Spent a little time opening up boxes for the bender, trying to do an inventory of everything, seems like these guys really have the stuff together, nothing but kudos thus far. Starting to feel a little better today, so debating starting on Cayman maintenance, or cart assembly....I am thinking cart assembly so then this weekend during maintenance, I could be painting said cart.

Cart components on the bottom (fyi - buying the weld together kit saves a ton of money on shipping b/c if they weld, then it has to ship on a pallet), then above that is the hydraulic ram and bracket attachment for the cart to hold all the dies, rollers, etc., seemed like a good investment, time will tell

Looking forward to seeing this come together. I looked at getting a bender but I just dont do enough fab to justify it.

it was tough pill to swallow, but my current project will benefit from it, and my next project is to build a tube chassis for my mk1, so it will certainly get put to use on that!

Speaking of bender, got out to the garage last night for a bit and started assembling the cart, then ran out of welding wire, so went out to pick up more, but by the time I got home it was late enough I wanted to eat dinner and relax as I am still fighting off some sickness...

I have to admit, these guys continue to impress, very well put together kit, seemingly easy to fit/weld.

In house news, finishing up the "paundry" room addition, meant we ended up needing to get the siding on the back of the house redone, due to making the turn from the side of the paundry to the back was not going to be "clean/elegant" so we opted to continue the board and baton around the back to the top peak of the garage....

....and as you may guess, deck upgrade is next....

While the builder was here, had them throw the baton strips up on the addition, they are much faster than I am, so saved me a lot of time and latter climbing....

Riding our Harley up the Tail was on my bucket list for many years, although we knew it would have to be a retirement trip. Unfortunately, we sold the bike before that could happen. Lately I've been talking to the wife about the possibility of when we are able to make that trip, maybe we throw the Camaro on the trailer I'm going to build and take the car up the Tail. :unsure: She likes towing the Jeep behind the coach as she enjoys our off-roading excursions and finding trails when we travel, but for that trip we have to deviate from the norm.

Thanks, I'm really excited to get started working with the bender.

Maintenance / Nut & Bolt check is always a must before that trip, not a fun place to find something that was over looked.

I would HIGHLY recommend a trip to ToD with the Camaro! I'd think you could put together a really fun trip to the Southeast towing the car, between TN, NC, SC, GA, you could find a lot of fun things to do!

Mike, I live about 45 minutes from the Dragon. The most fun I have ever had up there was in a car. Bikes were fun, but on a big bagger or cruiser its lots of scraping and slow going. I think you would most certainly appreciate the fun of a v8 sports car up there. And if you do go make sure you do Cherohala skyway as well. You can connect them together and the skyway is much faster bigger open road.

Don't forget Foothill Parkway, now that they finished the upper section, that is a fun little drive that you can additionally tie into the Skyway, lunch Tellico Plains, then Dragon back towards Fontana, if you are saying that direction.

I have the Acty which would be a nightmare up there. Just let the Cooper S go which would have been a blast up there. I have done the new part of the parkway into Wears Valley and enjoyed that as well. Last time I went up to Fontana Dam I found a bear cub on the side of the road without momma bear around. Stopped and snagged a couple quick pics and was worried she was gonna pop up out of thin air and yank me out of my Miata.

Mike, I live about 45 minutes from the Dragon. The most fun I have ever had up there was in a car. Bikes were fun, but on a big bagger or cruiser its lots of scraping and slow going. I think you would most certainly appreciate the fun of a v8 sports car up there. And if you do go make sure you do Cherohala skyway as well. You can connect them together and the skyway is much faster bigger open road.

Don't forget Foothill Parkway, now that they finished the upper section, that is a fun little drive that you can additionally tie into the Skyway, lunch Tellico Plains, then Dragon back towards Fontana, if you are saying that direction.

You guys are really making me yearn for retirement to get out there. Unfortunately, I'm still a few years away. Now all I can do is daydream about it. :rolleyes:
