Fender/bumper hammer?

I was talking with my welder on the truck and he mentioned he was looking for a funny shaped hammer for panels and fenders (except we call them bumpers over here). After a bit of a Google, a found a photo of a ‘fender bumping hammer’ and we established SO don’t list one.

Has anyone here got a recommendation for where I can buy a decent one that balances as nicely as possible, preferably on a wooden handle?

A fender hammer is inherently unbalanced.

You, absolutely, want a wooden handle for better feel.

Keep in mind that tool is designed for roughing in when you have access to the backside of the dent. You can also use another hammer to hit the hammer in tight clearence areas. It is not a precision tool and the average DIY'er would have no need for it. If you are working on anything modern to semi modern (60's-present) you will find that you never use it. It was designed for the fenders of cars from the 30's and 40's.
Balance and feel on this type of hammer really don't come into play. You rough in with this hammer, meaning bash the dent mostly out. Refine with a traditional body hammer and dolly.

also, the ones pictured are standard bumper hammers.

There are even bigger ones called donkey dicks. Those are also inherently unbalanced. They are just a different shape of fender hammer. Here is a picture of one…

They may have other names.

As previously stated they are for roughing in a panel with a lot of access from behind. There are numerous other uses for them even on modern cars/frames.

I've heard them referred to as donkey dicks and horse *****. I remember in one of the first shops I worked at, a body tech asked another tech if he could borrow his horse ****. I laughed and then proceeded to see him grab a hammer from his drawer. I then went and purchased my own LOL.

Here's one of those fender bumping hammer that I'm told works well on early vintage (20's-40's?) fenders. The barrel end seems to have not enough crown from end to end for such a fender without leaving coin marks on the ends of the strikes. So I thought I’d doctor it up for more bumping, less coining.

A round crowned face was turned out of some tool steel. And a bandsaw didn't want to touch it for the final cut, had to use a 4-1/2" cutoff wheel on this and the hammer.

Still needs some media blasting and a paint job, but looks like this will do the trick.

The OP pictured Martin hammers are nice quality. I have bought them from Summit Racing. Prob plenty of other places sell them too if you cant do summit in the UK
