Smallish haulish flea finds (Lugz 2024_20) from this morning.



Top to Bottom / Left to Right:

- Some kind of early car wrench. Appears to be cast malleable iron. Guessing fin de siecle to 'Teens. Two sockets on the left, a large hub opening in the middle and then an offset hex. I'll have to research later.

- PLVMB electrical/obstruction wrench

- Under that is a PLOMB feeler gauge

- Cast malleable iron file handle. I have a similar one from Disston. Not branded, just patent info, I will report it somewhere down on the VB later.

- Unbranded pruning shear. Primitive.

- Bonaloy DBE

- BHM Nickel-Molybndenum DBE. I have thee (3) of them, and this is a dupe unfortunately, but these are too uncommon to leave behind.

- Finally, a Howard Johnson's table puzzle, with instructions, dated 1975. My wife has a fondness for HoJo stuff from her childhood (only child, on the road a lot in a convertible with her single Go-Go Dancer mom), so this will be big brownie points.

I'm in the midst of changing my buying habits. I've decided to not go cheap on filling out the almost complete sets that I intend to keep, and not pick up the cheap stuff as quickly as I have been. The other part of the change is to start selling things I don't value or use, since passing on stuff to my other old tool buddies isn't making much of a dent in my pile.

My plan is to organize things (at least temporarily), by brand if possible, and by type if not, then let my buddies pick through it for anything they might have overlooked in past visits. After that, I intend to take stuff to local venues, like swap meets and flea markets, for a while. I believe that by sorting, it will make it easier for customers to find something they want, since my best buys have come from "digging" at poorly organized sales. Pricing shouldn't be a problem, since I can offer a very good deal compared to local pricing and still come out even or ahead. I suspect that some of my future customers will "flip" what I sell, but that will keep the items from being discarded.

I have accumulated a lot of this stuff hoping to keep it from being scrapped. I've passed on some of this already, and feel it was a worthy thing to do. I've been very careful not to waste time and effort on unworthy items, and minimize those that are lumped in with the stuff I have bought.

This will be a slow process, but I'll try try to make it a steady one. I think the sorting will be the worst part!

We're of very similar minds, Jock. The only differences are my collection is already mostly sorted down in the Lugzsonian, so it's just a matter of loading and unloading, and I am eyeing a big venue, like the Hershey or Allentown car show/swap meets, and staying a whole weekend. For two reasons, I don't want to sell where I bought, and I want to minimize how many times I have to do it. I'd love to one fell swoop most of it. The other choice is the flea market in Lambertville, NJ, on the Delaware river. It's a lot more upscale than my fleas. Prices are higher and the quality is higher. As you may recall, we pulled a lot of stuff out of my wife's mom's house that was previously in her mom's Junque Shop. She has been slowly and steadily selling all the stuff she is not keeping on Mercari, but she is getting frustrated by unreasonable buyers and some of the site's policies. I am trying to talk her into going with me. We could get several tables side by side, she could sell her stuff, I could sell my stuff. It would be fun. The dealers from the shops in New Hope, PA, just across the river from Lambertville, will eat her stuff up and just enough older gentlemen who like the kind of stuff I collect walk through there.

Lugz--the large hex in the center of the car wrench may have been for removing center nuts on some cars with spoked wheels. While many had the "knock-off" style nut with two ears that you would hit with a provided lead hammer, some had a hex nut on which you would use that wrench, hitting the wrench to loosen the nut. The hexes on the ends may have been for other specific nuts on the car. Ford once provided a wrench in their tool kit that fit spark plugs on one end and head nuts on the other.

Not a garage sale find, but rather prepping for a sale. I decided to clean out a shed and found a couple of old tool boxes that I had forgotten about. The first used to hold my cross-country skiing waxing tools, but thankfully, I dumped the wax at some point as it would have been a mess in the SC heat! Instead it contained some long lost mechanical drawing tools from high school mechanical drawing. The second Master Mechanic box contained more tools, but nothing of real value. Some cheap-o metric wrenches and a vise-grip knockoff. There were a couple of Craftsman wrenches, a Proto adjustable, small vise-grips, a small pipe wrench, some new in package Nicholson files, and some other miscellaneous items. The cheap-o tools will go to the sale, the others will go into my regular user box.

Twice a year we have a community wide yard sale here at my sub-division. It's always good. A lot of rich people who hunt and fish and have large shops. It's held on a Saturday, but residents get first crack the night before. I roll up on this one and the lady literally has about 10 items! So I'm just about to leave and I ask, "Is the tool box for sale?" She says, yes. OK, How much? $80!!! WTF!?! I only had $35 so I asked if she would take Venmo. She called her husband and he said fine. So I scored this $1k Kobalt tool box for $80. It even had the keys and the drawer liners. The damn thing weighs a ton. A random guy helped me load it and then followed me to my house to unload. Crazy

Wow OR ***** so bad I don't even want to post this stuff! But I took pics so might as well.

Struck out on 3 estate sales in a row and drove an hour away from home to hit a garage sale that was scheduled for tomorrow. The guy said in the ad that he would make appointments today, so of course I had to try and get there before everyone else! Unfortunately most of the stuff was non USA and the prices were not spectacular. But since I had spent a lot of time and gas on the effort I threw down more than I'd normally pay for this stuff. Not sure that math adds up but whatever

These three cast iron pans were $24, as you can see the left one is a Wagner and the other two aren't branded. Pretty sure the one in the middle is also a Wagner, any of you CI experts know what the one on the right might be? At first I was thinking an old lodge but it doesn't have the three notches.



No. 3 Stanley plane for $10, pretty rough shape but I picked it up in the hopes that it's one of the older ones. I'm not good at typing these though. The two big Proto DBE's are unusual, they look newer to me but I haven't seen these weird USS markings before. Paid $3 each.


This is the pile of random USA stuff that I picked out of all the junk. $20 after the guy counted every piece, I usually would offer less but figured since he gave me a private appt I wouldn't lowball. My favorite pieces are probably the Cornwell driver and the tiny little Bonney DOE. The Barcalo Auto Key style wrenches are kinda interesting too plus there are some Williams and Proto ignition wrenches along with some other random stuff.

Went to sales this morning with the wife. She looks for stuff for the kids, while I look for tools. Not a great day, but found a nice S-K set and 10” Crescent for $20 and some various other items for $5.

Stopped by a couple of pop-up sales on the way to the golf course. The first had a nice looking red toolbox laying open. When I got to it, I saw the Snap-On logo and got excited. There were a few tools in the upper tray, but the only thing that stuck out was the perfect screwdriver. When I inquired about price, the seller said ‘how about $15’ … DEAL!! This is a heavy gauge beast!!







The next sale was obviously from a hoarding situation and there was stuff everywhere. Picked up a bunch of miscellaneous stuff including a 15” Utica, a Barcalo, several Craftsman wrenches, a Williams breaker bar, and a cool looking hammer with a wooden handle. $7 for the lot!!

Didn’t find much today. I picked up this maglight for a friend who had been wanting one. I immediately noticed this one was quite a bit thicker than any of my other maglights. I remember someone on this thread a while ago was quite knowledgeable on these. It’s almost a full 1/4” thicker than the models I bought in the early 2000’s. Maybe it’s nothing? Just curious if this is an old model. 4D cell. It was only $5 and works fine.

Challenger 3/8 socket set, mostly complete and fortunately I have Challenger stuff to fill the off brand slots. $5. 7 Nicholson files for $2, and the SK driver, 1/4 sockets, and Snap on / New Britain sockets for a buck.


Picked this batch up from a retired mechanic's estate sale, it was pretty cleaned out by the time I got there but I found a few interesting bits for $20

Plomb speeder, Mac adjustables, stuff lower left is Snap on/Mac/Matco/Cornwell, a few Proto impact sockets and some LA small combos, big Wiss shears, Proto ext, and then some misc Craftman stuff, a bonney long combo and some random SK sockets. Finally 3 Matco wrench organizers which I need desperately in my life




Last, went by a garage sale and although I need more Craftsman like a hole in my head I had to grab these sockets. There are 3 unopened sets of 3/8 and 1/4 sockets so I think I have metric and SAE covered. Pretty sure I might have all the wrenches, ratchets, and 1/2" stuff in the basement so I might try to complete the set since they were in the original box. $15

We're back in Oregon and I managed to find a few interesting items at one scale this morning: a nice little Dunlap vise, 3 1/2" jaw width in original paint and a rather deco look--$20.00, a plierench that I will probably sell and a handy Stanley #15-210 Mini Hacksaw, a keeper that is a huge improvement over the cheap plastic ones being sold now, $1.00 each.

Sunex 3/8” impact, Craftsman number size drill gauge, old school Stanley Leverlock, Crescent needle nose pliers ominously numbered 666-6, Gordon 5/16” Whitworth combo, Super-Quality 3/8” “tappet style” thin combo wrench which is something I learned about recently and have been looking for. Edelmann & Company Malleable Iron Wrench No. 21, for Ford cars, as shown right in the middle of the 1917 ad below. Couple other cleaned-up close-up teasers, too.

I also managed to get this wine cooler for free! It turned on and ran just fine but wouldn’t cool. After a $6 relay from Amazon it works just fine. These seem to be pretty expensive new.


The owner had it less than a year. When it quit working the company sent them a new one and didn’t ask for this one back. Win win!

No I put the stickers to cover a couple imperfections and kept going lol. They went with the theme of what I’ll be using it for. The chiller was some risk and some luck. The description I was given fit with YouTube video I watched before picking it up. Apparently it’s quite a common failure on these type of units. Or at least the few hundred people that watched the same video lol.
