2024 Garage Sale Thread (13th Annual)

Well I have way too many tools and have been trying to avoid yard, garage and estate salesroof gutter drains but I keep backsliding LOL.
My local area of Benton Louisiana was having a lot of garage sales today so I decided to go poke around and hopefully buy nothing. Yeah right.
I hit up a bunch of sales but pretty much the usual clothes and household goods. Yawn. Picked up a piece of 8 x 2 foot pegboard I didn't really need and some water diverters for roof gutter drains which I actually needed. No photos, I'm lazy.
One address intrigued me for some reason. It was way out in the boonies and just said "Lots of stuff"
So I go there and the whole place looks interesting from the start. Big shop and lots of cool stuff around it.
A guy is carrying around a vintage Coca Cola picnic cooler and sets it down. I ask "how much" and he says he had just brought it out and wasn't sure if he wanted to sell it. He says make an offer and I say I hate doing that, tell me a price on the high side and I'll think about it. He says $50 and I say thats too cheap, I'll give you $80. Of course he agrees and his dad even said that was pretty cool for me to do.
So I'm looking around and I spy a Bosch 12" sliding compound miter saw with a new blade on it and a $30 sticker.
I ask what's wrong with it and he says nothing, he used to do trim work on houses but had shoulder issues and didn't need it anymore. So I snatched up that deal! We talked for a bit and I've got some stuff he's interested in, vises and stuff. After getting home and finding out how much that Bosch sells for I'm going to probably give him a vise!

Bid on several lots in an online tool auction. Only won two lots, but was happy with what I got. Craftsman 7 pc saltus wrench set, including the rare 11/16” wrench.
Four adjustable wrenches, 2 10” Diamond, a Barcalo, and one I can‘t read for sure.

Hit up the Portland Swap meet this Friday/Saturday. It wasnt my biggest haul in terms of total quantity but I got some cool stuff! For anyone who doesnt know, this is the largest swap meet this side of the mississippi. Apparently only Hershey is bigger than this one. The reason why it's so big is that there are 2 swapmeets going on next to each other, one at the race track and and one at the expo center. I walked it all and I'm worn out. Like Disney Land worn out....but it was totally worth it.

- Scored a proto tool mobile parts roller for my other proto tool mobile that is missing this one has. $20. It looks clean but was ran into by a vehicle and has a ton of broken spot welds and would require a ton of work.

Very nice find on the Mechanikit! These were made for Snap-on by Duplex, and many others, long before Pendleton acquired them. I have a few, but not a nice wartime Snappy version.

On Friday I was able to swing by two local estate sales, picking up a few items, and on Saturday I had planned to head up to the big swap meet going on in Portland that stretches out over four days. But, my wife informed me that she had made actual plans, and I was in charge of goings on a Schloss Beemer. So, I was able to hit one sale in the city north of me, as it was raining when I needed to go to the dog park. And I am glad I hit that one sale, as it kept me from spending a ton of money, which I would have done at the swap.


The plastic shims, drill index, books, and pile of ignition wrenches all came from Fridays sales, while the Craftsman, Plomb and Blue Point items were from Saturdays stop. Here is what was inside the Plomb box:

some misc. vintage sockets, Plomb T-handle, and a full set of Indestro ignition wrenches. I spent about $12 total for all of that, and I might go back to the Sat. sale today, see if I can scrounge up some more interesting stuff.

What's the date on the Navy navigation book, Beemer?

Picked up an interesting Navy Department "book" (1941) myself at the flea this morning (Lugz 2024_21). Like the full set of 1939 Federal Standard Stock Catalogs I have, the binding (Remington-Rand) is as interesting as the content!

The upholsterers' hammer is a very early C.S. Osborne.

If you looked at the cross-recess screwdriver and instantly thought, "Herbrand," due to the signature blue handle, you'd be right.

Klein wire strippers and Milwaukee screw driver free for helping my favorite tool vendor set up his tables. Klein 1/4” nut driver, 50 cents. 1/4” torque wrench $15. Quick grip clamps, $3 for the pair. $43.50 total.

I normally shy away from mfd era and try to stick to proto la but for the price (and the fact I can almost fill these both and make some room in my proto mfd tool mobile, I purchased them willingly plus I got the invitation to purchase some plomb boards hopefully in the future! snap on- I was going to leave them but then my inner tool collector spoke up and I grabbed them. They will go to a new home where they are appreciated**

Funny story from the expo center swap this weekend- I saw a vendor selling a dirty but decent shape Pressweld lower 3 drawer roller. Hammered gray in color. It was on a modified roller base however. I walked over and began looking at it to see the price and condition. While there the seller's know it all friend says in a loud voice to me- "your too young to have one of those". To which I looked at him and said totally dead pan, "yeah I only have 4 of these at home". I didnt tell him about the pressteel thread but I thought it was super funny. I ended up not buying the lower roller but at least I got a funny story of some dude popping off. You can never judge a book by it's cover

Late posting for yesterday's finds as I was engaged in the LR <<>>ER move after the AM run - Sun came out after over .4" of rain with snow in the higher hills and hial down her as well very colds storn for April around here!

First couple of sales, -amlls:

50 ft of Paracord, a Fan for my youngest who collects them, Locking hitch pin, Millers Falls block plane, and a couple of Jorgensen Pony deep gullet C-clamps -I thought they might have been aluminum when I picked them up but a magnet test proved otherwise. I like the light aluminum clamps for some delicate work and these are light despite being steel.






Dykes are Boker, the other pliers are Utica, but tree different era's of markings. Interesting to see from a single stop. Hose nozzle for the collection, PowrKraft Snips Smal,Plvmb DBE, Bonnet and Barcalo Combos



Estate sale, an Aluminum tackle box with tackle and three fly spool? -no reel - I'll have to research that and see if it's worth further investment. I've straightened another one of these aluminum boxes so I have hopes this one will also straighten well the handle has to go however...

My dad has been visiting for the last three weeks and my younger brother's son, who lives in Dallas, drove down yesterday to see his Grandad and enjoy watching Purdue beat N.C.State in the Final Four. My nephew just bought his first house and is practically tool-less except for the S-K 3/8 socket set I sent him as a housewarming gift.

I sent him home today with a few other tools:

Estate sale ($190): T.C. Gotch (1854-1931), study for "My Crown and Sceptre" (1891), unsigned. ($1500 offered, $9000 retail)

Saw it on the 1st day and they wanted $550. Picked it up on the final day. Provenance seems good. It was certainly at the edge of my price range, but I just like it. The portrait is of his daughter, Phyllis.​

But.....the weather was nice and the itch got to me, so I went to a couple of sales this weekend

Found a Rohm 3/8 chuck with 1/2" capacity which I couldn't leave behind for two dollars
I have a ratchet problem as well as an affinity for Wizard tools.
I buy little bity hammers even though I never use them.
When reaching for a hammer, I always grab the biggest FH to get the job done

I always ask sellers, what did you use this little hammer for?

Today I went back to the big tool sale, the one were I found the Plomb box, to see what else I could scrounge up. Here is what I got for $5

Craftsman puller, Blue Point tap extractor set, and a Companion box full of:

Misc. US sockets, Yankee driver blade, Craftsman Star Trek 1/4 ratchet, Craftsman Chisel.

After paying I took one more look around and spotted this, which I picked up for $20

a nice, little Equipto, full of misc. parts. Some of which I will keep, some I will scrap.

Honestly, I am not sure. They loaded it in my truck for me (walking with a cane has certain... privileges.) and I took a pic and strapped it down and off I went. It is loaded, so I can't tell by weight. We will see when I unload it and get it in the shop.
