I'm a bit curious about the shelf/cabinet storage under the ShopSmith.

The shelf and drawers were added to my ShopSmith sometime in the early 90’s.
The drawers, their hangers and slides were all made from salvaged materials from a neighbor‘s remodel project.

The 4” dust collection pipe for the various machine functions is mounted to the backside of the shelf.

I’d build the drawers different if I were making them today but the set up has served me well to hold saw blades, sanding disks, lathe parts, etc. for the machine for over 30 years.

reset the GFCI that the UPS sits on tha powers the home lab.

The power went out last night long enough for the UPS to die and everything to shut down. For some reason, the GFCI only partially tripped. When the power came back on, there was enough for the UPS to power on and boot everything, but it was showing degraded power from mains. I hit the 'test' button to trip it fully. Then hit the 'reset' button to turn everything back on.

I also cleaned up the main workbench a bit to make room for more kayak work this week/weekend.

Checked to see if Jeep had the parts for the recall on the '23 Grand Cherokee. Website says "parts are available". Call dealer; "we'll have to call you back". They don't call back. Call dealer 5 hours later and they say that Jeep is "trickling the parts out" and they have a "priority list" and I'm now on the list. Super. I'm driving 2500 miles, leaving in a couple of weeks, to go cut wood on the family farm. 87 year old aunt still heats with wood in the homestead rock house in Kansas. Family time while playing with power tools and tractors. I'm in.

So, if I don't post again you'll know that the front upper control arm pinch bolt failed on my Jeep and I'm in a crevasse in the mountains of Utah or Colorado. Or possibly a family member helped me lose 15lbs of ugly fat by chopping my head off with a chainsaw. Both are non-zero probabilities.

My 06 expedition doesn’t have any alarm for low oil or high temp ,

But if you try to drive it without the seat belt , it alarms like it’s having a Nuclear meltdown .

At least it’s not like the new ones where the engine shuts off if the tail lights get water in them .

It should beep from the cluster if it overheats or drops oil pressure, my 06 F150 did @277k when the oil pump drive shaft broke..............

Had been soaking a carb in some chemdip. Pulled it out and got it cleaned up. Now have the bowl for it also soaking. It’s pretty crusty.

Put a bunch of tools away.


Got a bunch of junk/scrap separated out to make space.

Nothing of real value. But stuff needing done in any case.

Changed the gearbox oil in the rototiller, fired it up for a test run. Pulled the right wheel off - tire has a slow leak somewhere.

Put up a metal shelving unit I got for free, and organized my various oils, coolants, and other fluids on that. Finally put up some hooks to hang my Werner MT ladder on the wall. Moved some potted plants outside.

I slimed mine, excessively, and took it for a cruise around the yard. I can see the green where it seeped out the cracks/checks in the rubber. It's kept pressure over a few winters.

I'm planning on that. One side of the tire had a tiny leak in several spots around the bead. Tire and rim are in great shape, just won't seal well. I'll bring it into work tomorrow to tinker with, should be slow on a rainy day.

Messed with the 1963 Honda CB77 a bit.
No ports for vacuum sync on carbs so I made some. Had some tiny M5 barbs.


Filed and adjusted points. Also used a timing light this Go on it to check total advance. Points timing in sync for each cyl but the total out a bit. Took 20 tries to get this pic while running.



Everything is bedded in so shouldn't need and adjustment for some time.
Goin for a quickie ride soon.

I decided to turn mine into a jig table, that will eventually get a base, and he's gonna make a workbench. Mine was cut down to 30" wide and we laid out a grid and started drilling. It took a couple hours to get thru that much oak! I've still got a long ways to go. It's also heavy as frick. It needs a lot more holes

Still gotta come up with something for the offcuts

Bled and adjusted the brakes after yesterday’s replacement. Changed the oil and greased the suspension since I already had it up in the air with wheels off.



Got back to working on the new handle for the yard vac. Making side braces to support it, and some tabs to attach the bag to. Need to get this welded up and in use, now that it seems like spring is actually here.

We were cruising on I-20 with the cruise set at 77 , went up a hill and the engine hiccuped and then started running normal again ,

I glance down and see the temp gauge is pegged ,
Turn off the AC and
Turn bothe the front and rear heat on full blast , needle drops back noticeably , we hit the next exit and only thing I could find wrong was a little low on coolant ,

Eat at the Waffle House while the engine cools and we top it off with a gallon of very expensive coolant from a gas station and it was fine after that .

I use some short lengths of double loop chain. They drop into a vertical slot in a piece of steel that sticks out between the tanks.

Got both sides cleaned up with new cylinders, shoes, and a hardware kit. The kits used to have all the small parts, but now it’s just springs. Had to clean up the adjusters.

Still needs to be filled and bled.

Continued cleaning and sorting the disaster (garage), but it was such a nice day outside, I got sidetracked into cleaning up some of the perennial beds fora few hours. Back in the garage later, I unboxed / assembled the new combo belt sander / grinder and finished up cleaning around the grinder bench.

Found a spot to hang up a small electric chain hoist that I have moved two dozen times since I salvaged it 20 years ago. Not sure if I’ll ever use it, but I’m tired of tripping over it.

Moved the 50A receptacle for the welder to make it more accessible and called it a day after filling the garbage and recycling bins.

I’m not sure on the order of failure. Either the wheel cylinder failed, got fluid all over everything, and the shoes delaminated (possibly swelled from fluid contaminatio), or the shoes came off first (both of them? seems unlikely) allowing the cylinder to over travel. Either way, yeah, a mess.

Axle seal seems ok. I should re-check the rear diff fluid level to be sure though.

Last night I finished the paint and installed the metal rack I built. I got tired of having metal all over the place, lately a lot of it stored on the car lift to keep it out of my way. 8' 4" tall and just over 16' wide. This is as nice as it will ever look. lol. Today I get to start loading it, fun fun. Top of the outlets are just below the tops of the #4 rungs so they should still be assessable when steel is on the rack.

Pulled the carb bowl out of the chemdip and wiped it out. It’s better, but still crusty.

So back in it goes until tomorrow after work.

if the axle seal is leaking you'll see it in 500 or so miles on your new parts. But you'd know it. monkey **** and all.

Finished cutting up the old gate from a rental. Some of the wood went into a recycling bin, the rest will be put into the pile of lumber for Bird Houses.
