Both @bluebolt & @Outlawmws ****!

My dad has been visiting for the last three weeks and my younger brother's son, who lives in Dallas, drove down yesterday to see his Grandad and enjoy watching Purdue beat N.C.State in the Final Four. My nephew just bought his first house and is practically tool-less except for the S-K 3/8 socket set I sent him as a housewarming gift.

I sent him home today with a few other tools:

That is a very nice gift to your nephew! You are in the running for Uncle of the Year.

I also managed to get this wine cooler for free! It turned on and ran just fine but wouldn’t cool. After a $6 relay from Amazon it works just fine.
Dang, nice! You ****!
Well I have way too many tools and have been trying to avoid yard, garage and estate salesroof gutter drains but I keep backsliding LOL.
Pff. Nice finds.
Swap meet
You ****!
I sent him home today with a few other tools

The baby and I took a walk Saturday morning. There were lots of yard sales in the neighborhood for some reason. We hit two with no luck. We then came to a crossroads with YS signs pointing in two directions. She chose the sign that said TOOLS (she’s so smart). It was also on our way home as I had to get the dog to an appointment.

The sale didn’t disappoint. Things were priced very cheap!
We walked up right about 9:00am and there were four bins of tools. I had my daughter in the buggy facing my side as I looked. We couldn’t have been there ten seconds when a car raced up and several old couples jumped out. The one guy couldn’t wait even a second and instead of going around the table he’s reaching over my daughter (not across her but the length of the buggy). I was almost like dude….

I just pulled the buggy right against my leg and held my ground. :ROFLMAO:

Next thing you know there were 4 old guys swarming around me and there were 3 women. It was a sea of white hair.

My daughter’s favorite phrase is “Uh-Oh”, so she says it in the middle of everything and this woman goes “Oh, do you have an Uh Oh?”. :ROFLMAO::poop: I’m like “No, it’s just her favorite phrase.”.

Anyway, got some Craftsman (including pocket clip scribe), Brown & Sharpe, Starrett, S-K ratchet, Thorsen, Bonney, Proto sockets, Channellock, Taiwan one hander, Walden “STW” marked extension, Hinsdale, offset Merit wrench. The Mac offset was altered but for a grand total of 5 bucks for all I can’t complain.

Clamps from the ReStore today.

(2) Irwin 2 in. 2 bucks ea.
(4) Irwin 12 in. 5 bucks ea.
(2) USA Jorgensen 18in. 10 bucks ea.

I've never had the Irwin type before, only f-style or pipe types. They seems pretty handy.

I really like those 2 in ones, I use them a lot, not for high clamping forces but they are very versatile
I like them for initial clamping, then attach my Besseys, once I don’t need four hands to do the job. The quick clamps aren’t robust enough for serious holding of things, but much quicker than setting Bessey K clamps, F clamps, or pipe clamps.

When people do things like this I just take my sweet *** time. Someone reaching across my kid would have been tough to not say anything.

Finally got out to a few sales all at once. Three total stops, pics show everything mixed together. Overall, was about $42, of which $25 was the Justrite can. Majority was from the first sale ($35), few randoms from the second ($5), and the last had the Indestro stuff ($2).

First pic is mostly the unbranded stuff or non-tools, not sure why the mini square is at an angle (actually grabbed 2x). Wixey is $25 new, but only cost me about $3, so feel like that was a win. Any ideas on the small socket box? No labels, but old friction clasp. Curv-mark roll, chalk scriber, and a spare mini-pipe cutter (cheaper this way to buy and toss when worn out than buy new wheels for them).

Second pic shows various tool groups. Left is Bluepoint, with the small pliers being SO. Center row, A few of the sockets are SO, rest are CM =V=. 1/2" extension is JH Williams, P2 screwdriver, Ullman screw starter, Indestro wrench, 1/4 driver and possibly flex driver?, Cutco scissors, 6" Proto adjustable. On the right is Artisan pliers, two SK DBE and Channellock pliers.

Third pic is the Oily rag can. Been meaning to grab one for a while, and was waiting to get priced when I saw it. Someone else commented afterwards "I have been meaning to grab one of those"...I feel like most of us should have at least one, if we are being honest.

Any idea how to ID the flex driver? Thinking it is Indestro, as it was found with the other two, and the box had a few other Duro/Indestro made stuff (Power-Kraft, Select Steel, etc). Took pics of any identifying markings. Thanks, will post close-ups in individual threads.

I’ve been busy demoing my new home. One of the things I found in the basement was a full ammo can of 7.62 Match with matching lot numbers. I don’t have a .308 so I sold it today.
IMG_5787.jpegIMG_5790.jpeg

It helped pay for my new workhorse for “the garage sale ranch”. I’ve been looking for a front end loader because I need one bad. I answered a marketplace ad last week and closed the deal last night on a ‘63 Case 530 backhoe with loader. It runs great and everything articulates as it should. The owner was a little emotional when I drove it away to my place about 1 1/2 miles away. It was very sentimental to him revolving around his Dad. He was on FaceTime with his whole family when I pulled away.

I got it for $1800 (asking for forgiveness instead of permission from SWMBO).

!!! He tosses tools!!! Off with his head! Off with his head!

Can we expect a rattle-can resto? Gonna need a case or three of EvapoRust, too.
Glad it's mechanically sound, though.

Yeah, when they are cheap off-brand chinesium... I don't toss the good stuff... :bounce:

In more seriousness, when I can find these for $1 each, vs the 7-10$ HD wants for one wheel, I grab them to have spares.

Greetings all the way from merry England. Today I wasn’t on shift, and was doing errands, one of which took me past a midweek car boot sale. Flea markets are “car boot sales” over here, boot being a trunk!

IMG_6264.png

Secateurs and hose spray triggers were old shop stock German Gardena at £5/$6.25 each. Two G clamps and Sureform were £5/$6.25 for the the 3. Clamps are free turning and the British Sureform has quite a lot of bite left underneath it. I did need actually need some new secateurs and I usually buy Gardena because there are great shape to grip…. The rest? Well I’m sure you guys know how it goes….

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!?

Okay, I know the thread has always leaned quantity and modern and common/uncommon vintage and bargain, and the rare/weird/antique guys have been dwindling lately, but for those wondering where my ****-o-Meter is... ^ this ^ is...

PotY 5 Major Suckage.jpg

...and THEE best haul of the year so far, in my opinion.

Fred,

I have a Lane "SUPER UNIQUE" (talk about superlative branding...!) ratchet in a complete 17-pc "Style G" set in its original wooden box , but I never get tired of looking at it. I also have the pressed-steel Steelcraft that 4.c helped you out in identifying, but you can count them on one hand here on GJ! And I would love for you to please post the Henckels ($$$, same as the knife maker!) and the Russkie (looks like a standard screw type but uncommon COO to say the least) adjustables in my Oddfellows thread. But I would get the shivers to find the H.D. Smith slip joints (rare and ironically highly desirable explicitly because they're not a "Perfect Handle" tool and a very late offering for that venerated firm just before they went under), and I would think I had died and gone to heaven to find the adjustable Baxter! I have two sizes of his second patent pattern, with the thumbwheel adjuster inside the middle of the shank, but I have never seen one of the oriignal patent jobbies in the wild!

The Gods of Special Old and Weird Hand Tools were surely smiling on you last weekend!

Apologies for the delayed reply - this thread glitches in my Alerts.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but when it comes to buying older and quality tools at sales in Great Britain do you have a lot of competition? From what you see on this forum are buyers looking for mostly the same items as here in the US or are there differences?

Went with my dad to a sale yesterday and got there about 90 minutes after opening. Lots of woodworking machinery, clamps, hand saws and random collections of the owner--there were a dozen or so old(ish) electric irons. There were also a dozen homemade cabinets with kitchen drawer fronts to paw through. I had found the Dunlap folding draw knife and a couple of smalls and was making my way to the check-out when I decided to poke around one of the tables again. I'm usually pretty good about checking underneath tables but I had apparently missed this one--and seemingly, so had everyone else. Undisturbed, but in full view, was a GMTK type tool box. A quick perusal indicated it had a load of various vintage US maker sockets and tools but also a share of offshore items.

Not wanting to do a detailed inventory on the spot, I took the whole box (which I keep telling myself to stop doing). After some negotiation we settled on $28 including the few items in my bag.

After sorting and weighing (57.5 lbs) I found a lot of brands, but not much of any one.

Groups are, L to R: Armstrong; Barcalo; Blackhawk; Bonney; Challenger; Chromium Vanadium; Crestaloy; DuroChrome/D-I/Indestro;
Harrold (Lady's Foot); Herbrand; Husky; New Britain; OTC; P&C; Plomb/WF; Proto; R&P Mfg screwdriver; Snap-on; Tru-Fit;
Thorsen; Truth; Vlchek; Wizard; Walden; Wright; Zimmer chisel; CaseXX knife; Unmarked Group; Petersen ViseGrip; CI J&S ^ 1943 3/8 Punch; Millers Falls 601 1/32" Nail set.
Apr 11 24a.jpg

Mostly Craftsman Group
Apr 11 24b.jpg

Offshore Group. Socket set is K-Mart (Japan); 6-piece combo set is K-mart Korea
Apr 11 24c.jpg

Under each handle, the box is stamped E.J.M. ALEER & Co. INC. Philadelphia
The box has had a hard life. There are a couple of sheet metal repairs, the front corner feet are worn flat and the back two are missing. The bottom has a couple of rust holes and the PO put a piece of Formica inside to strengthen it.
Apr 11 24d.jpg

The surprise find of the day was at the bottom of the box. A Snap-on 9/32 set--all date coded 1935 except the extension which is 1936. I cannot find this set in any of the SO catalogs from that era. The set is missing the M-10 5/16" socket, while the M-408 8pt has been abused and the M-7, 7/32" has been ground down to reduce the circumference.

Buyers definitely are after quality items this side of the water too - bargains are quality tools with unknown names (Facom, NWS etc) or forgotten names (Bedford, Elliot Lucas, Gordon etc) obvious quality names never make it to the sales - Snap-on and the like would head straight to eBay.

Most tools are from retired/deceased house and shed clearances found in a box of rusty **** - just like the US. The trick is getting there first 😁

If it's not too badly obscured, when you clean it up and take another look I think you'll find that it reads, "E.J. McALEER".

I'm sure you are correct. The stamps on both lid sections are shallow and have been painted over and I initially thought I could see a small dash (-) between the M and the A. Your interpretation makes much more sense. Thanks.

Just hit the first yard/garage sale of the year in my area!

Pretty good pickin's:

53650342385_2fa1ed278d_b.jpg

Another Union toolbox w/Spillproof latch--I love these things--and some interesting wrenches. A "whattzit" wrench, a couple of Barcalo, A Williams "Superrench" DOE, 3/8 & 5/16, a Masterwrench by Heller Brothers Co., and a nice Proto 3/8" flex head bar to go with my 1/2" one.

All that, and:

53650230509_09cf8d81cc_b.jpg

53649884426_b05019d778_b.jpg

The star of the show.

It even works!

53649008222_de98ef19c0_b.jpg

53649884421_ec598db7f0_b.jpg

I walked out of the sale with this haul and change from a twenty.

Man, that's my mom's old toaster. The swirlies are a dead giveaway. Replaced because it was old, not because it was dead... Not common for my parents.

Yeah, well, now it's MINE and I'm taking it home to get good and toasted tonight!

Their loss!

I must have been through a half-dozen toasters in the last decade just trying to find one that didn't ****. Not a great toaster, not even a good toaster, just one that doesn't ****. We'll see how this measures up. I kinda' doubt it will ****.

Besides, the shiny chrome will fit right in beside some of my shiny nickel lanterns and stoves.

We decided to check out a couple of estate sales after the PT appointment was over. We arrived late to the first sale in Martinez and any tools that might have been there were long gone. All we got was a bargain Blue Ray player minus the cord. IMG_4126.jpeg
The second sale had a few tools left and we grabbed those.
