A buddy had that size (about) in a horizontal. I was building a 4 banger and the new pistons were fractionally too tall (I had decked the block 30) These were *reverse hemi" dished pistons. There was virtually no combustion chamber... and I took the top edges of each piston down about 20 thou. How did I keep them even equal? I used calipers from the top to the top ring until all were equal. Worked perfectly!. 195-200 PSI in a compression test!

Estate sale ($46): Standard Tool no. 8 drill index; Kafer thickness gauge (Germany); Faries Lamp; Brush; Guitar Styles of Brownie Mcghee book; Air cushion lift; Tucker bending form?; 5" Ashcroft bi-metal thermometer; Dabbing brush; 2 - Curved wood clamps; Stanley no. 45 fence; Open back banjo; Ideal veterinary syringe; DeWalt 5/8" Arbor shaper with cupboard door knives; Craftsman no. 4067 tap wrench ($22.50); Wire-O Cleaners wire cleaners; Nippers; Forming bar?; L.S.S Starrett No. 154-D Adjustable parallel; Reamer; 12- Stanley no. 45/55 irons/knives($75).

Gonna try and bring the banjar back. Just ordered a skin head; friction tuners; 5th string tuner; bridge; and Nylgut strings. I figure, I can make the nut, tailpiece and the 7 missing tension hooks. Paid $6 for the banjo and already sunk $94 into it, but there ain't nuthin more fun than hammering on a banjo -- my opinion, not my wife's :)

Do you play? I am wondering if your choice of words was just a coincidence, or if you play and use a "clawhammer" (or frailing) style. I learned how to frail on a 5-string banjo when I was 12 or so, but haven't played one in many years.
Yup, I'm a clawhammer player. Played a lot for awhile, but now just pick it up to remind myself that I can still play. Built a gourd banjo a couple of years ago, which was fun. Figure, this will be a good banjo to finally learn how to play the Galax lick.

We were notified of a pre estate sale having signed up with the company putting it on. Apparently quite a few others had signed up as well. There was plenty of well used Snap-on available at close to retail prices. The previous owner was quite thorough about marking his tools as well. Consequently, we came home with a pretty small haul. I did grab this autographed Snap-on 18mm socket for my user box.

A nice combo for Mr BillIMG_4230.jpeg
A couple of Thorsen pieces, one 3/4” drive. IMG_4223.jpeg
Proto flare nut wrench. IMG_4217.jpeg
Powr-Kraft punch that had seen plenty of use. IMG_4218.jpeg
A little Indestro extension IMG_4232.jpeg
I‘ll see what comes out of the evaporust tomorrow.

My girl saw a lady putting out garage sale signs for tomorrow, she ignored the tomorrow part and went by..lol The husband was out in the garage setting up and told her he would be out there for a while, so I went by.

The guy had tons of wood working tools, but I’m more of a metal guy.

I did get a pretty nice cabinet for 25 bucks though.IMG_1899.jpeg

Nice looking sale with very reasonable prices. I would have grabbed those Osborne punches in the roll immediately. IMG_1062.png

I didn’t look at the price of those because I have a mac gasket punch kit. It probably doesn’t go quite as big as that leather kit, but more sizes over all.
It's going to bug me that I can't see how much the Snap-On sockets are, lol.
Everything was priced to sell, I didn’t need anymore sockets, so I don’t remember the price, other than most of his prices were a good deal.

It was basically a wrench day (Lugz 2024_23) for me.

2024_23.jpg

- I don't make a habit of buying antique ratchets unless they're special, and this one, from Greene-Tweed, with a presumptuously spectacular branding ("FAVORITE REVERSIBLE RATCHET WRENCH NO. 1"), is pretty dang cool. More later on the 'Antique Ratchets Thread.'

- I don't make a habit of buying any old 15" adjustable Auto Wrench, either, unless there's a good reason, and the reason in this case is the very nice ">>-PIERCE->" logo on the housing!

- Almost as if it was conjured out of thin air merely by us talking about it, I was quite literally saying to a guy down on the Vintage Tools Discussion forum just yesterday that I've been hoping to run into another Bethlehem Spark Plug Co ratchet for a set I found a couple years ago that is missing one!

I saw a Craigslist ad for an estate sale a couple of miles from my house that had a photo of an old touring car and said "tools" too. I got there Thursday about 20 minutes before it opened, and there was already a crowd. I spied the detached shop out back, so when they opened at the appointed hour, I headed back there. Some people had been poking around there earlier, and I noticed a couple of items they had gleaned before I got there. One was a really beat up Rock Island 697 vise with a $100.00 price on it. I wasn't disappointed at missing that one!

There was some interesting stuff in the shop, and since I hadn't thought to bring a bag, I had to make a couple of trips to the checkout area in the garage to make a pile. The first run was mostly supplies, as they were quite cheap:
Estate 1.jpg
A half-full gallon of lacquer thinner, two gallons of the diesel motor oil I use, four pair of gloves, and a Case 580 Super K backhoe parts book that will go to a friend.

The next trips were a lot of small items that would have been handled easily in one shopping bag:
Estate 2.jpg

A truck turn signal switch that I need for a machine I'm working on
A nice Plews pump oil can
Craftsman =V= "flying V" 1/2 dr. ratchet
P&C 1276 pliers
Long needle-nose pliers
MAC COB16 flare nut wrench 1/2
Duro-Chrome 1827 obstruction DOE 9/16
MAC CHB-24 tubing crowfoot 3/4
two Stewart-Warner ammeters, 60 amp., Caterpillar 8M7892
US Gauge 5,000 psi gauge
Western Auto spark plug gap gauge/adjuster
Bonney K-53 feeler gauge

One thing that wouldn't fit in a shopping bag very well:
CDI 250 2.jpg

Like new, with calibration and manual.

I'll continue in the next post.

Our local humane society puts on a big sale twice a year, and the spring version started today. I got there about 20 minutes before starting time and was probably about 120 in the line, but it got going quickly at the appointed time, and I did find a few tools. An Ullman Devices F-2 screw starter, a Millers Falls spiral screwdriver labeled Craftsman, and a Craftsman ball pein hammer, all out of the 50 cent box. Wife found some things we actually could use and a few books, so I hope this is a good start to our garage sale season. I did see a garage sale about a week ago but found nothing of interest at it. And I'm seeing some snowflakes in the air.

Estate sale today. A vintage Monkey Wards toolbox with multiple complete sets of brand new, never used AC Delco branded sockets. Marked “Taiwan”, there are 6 point and 12 point, 1/4 in drive and 3/8, deep and shallow. All sockets are metric and there are no skips. 74 sockets plus 2 extensions (no ratchets) and a few other miscellaneous items. $25 for all.

You ****! That's a nearly $300 cabinet--and you didn't have to assemble it. Plus a pegboard kicker!
When I moved last year, I got rid of a huge selection of peg board hooks that I had stored for years..lol I did have a yard tools hanger to hang my garage brooms and dust pans though.
@Old Man Roger I have one word for that guy's garage: clean! Jayzus. My garage hasn't looked like that in... [starts doing math in head]... ever.
Now that you mention it, even with all the wood working stuff, I don’t even remember seeing saw dust.
@Old Man Roger really ***** for showing restraint! That cabinet is a steal.

I have folded up notes in my wallet, rolls of spare cash that I've squirriled up over a lifetime for incidents like that.
If I were still in West Palm, I might‘ve thought about it. Selling tools there is easier than finding them for sale.

We traveled across the San Rafael bridge to an estate sale in Mill Valley this morning. There were a few things left that interested me. The DeWalt case was empty. IMG_4242.jpeg
A 1943 8” Ridgid pipe wrench. IMG_4247.jpeg
An early carbon steel 12” Diamond adjustable wrench from the late 20s.IMG_4248.jpegReally thick jaw. IMG_4249.jpegXcelite screwdriver IMG_4266.jpeg
A couple of Starrett rules, one for a square. IMG_4261.jpegIMG_4263.jpeg
A rusty Craftsman squareIMG_4265.jpeg
Three various Utica pliers, plus one Bell System. IMG_4278.jpegIMG_1096.png

Some LEFT-BEHINDS this morning and one for the Zoomies.
Congrats on the BSPCo rat.
What a fanciful juxtaposition of antique combatants - tilting knights, secutor/retiarius, cavalier/roundhead (and pointer/long-gun hunter?!) - on the external decoration, with the pistol function of the left-behind “Challenger” arcade game!

Congrats on the BSPCo rat.
Thanks. Hopefully the L/T handle will show up next.

Agreed. Very cool. And it actually worked. Serious collector only pricing, though.
