Quite a few sales advertised today. Most of the ones listing tools were a bust, but had good luck at one. Was the estate of an elderly gent I knew from church. For $10, got an Acushnet Bullseye putter and an ammo box full of American Steel … Crescent, Craftsman, Proto, Schollhorn, etc. The prize was the S-K 1/4” drive set that seems mostly complete.

We traveled across the San Rafael bridge to an estate sale in Mill Valley this morning. There were a few things left that interested me. The DeWalt case was empty. IMG_4242.jpeg
A 1943 8” Ridgid pipe wrench. IMG_4247.jpeg
An early carbon steel 12” Diamond adjustable wrench from the late 20s.IMG_4248.jpegReally thick jaw. IMG_4249.jpegXcelite screwdriver IMG_4266.jpeg
A couple of Starrett rules, one for a square. IMG_4261.jpegIMG_4263.jpeg
A rusty Craftsman squareIMG_4265.jpeg
Three various Utica pliers, plus one Bell System. IMG_4278.jpegIMG_1096.png

The old dewalt cases can be nice. I take an oscillating multi tool and cut the molded pieces inside out for better tool storage for different items.

OMR and Provincial both ****.

I found an one-the-way estate sale returning home this morning from a monthly breakfast gathering. The neighborhood was very ritzy, as in large country estates along a narrow road. I found a box of hose fittings in the garage and added two items from the main house basement. Paid $5 at checkout.

1000005615.jpg

Hose fittings--am hoping to find the quick disconnect pieces I need for a sprinkler setup I'm putting in.
Proto 9/16" combo--too pristine to leave behind. No sign of any mates.
Craftsman long flat-blade screw holder driver, also in good shape.

Among the left-behinds:
1000005614.jpg
Thermos branded King Seeley lantern with Coleman glass

1000005612.jpg
S-K Tools long toolbox

Not pictured: Bilstein DBP auto jack. According to Ebay, it could be for either a Volkswagen or a Porsche. Although many are listed, none are selling. I left it.

Big plastic tote of Armstrong stuff at the Flea Market today
Probably 50lbs or so of brand new Armstrong tools still living in their plastic wrappings

The bad news is that the tote was probably left outside in the rain and housed a few gallons of water in it
.....along with the tools.

Dollar each.
Like I said, all Armstrong.
There were a couple of 1/2" drive breaker bars....
A lot of onsies like crowfoot sockets (crowfeet? :ROFLMAO: )....combination wrenches (I took a rusty 19mm)....double boxed end ratcheting wrenches... big handful of punches, big slip joint pliers, impact sockets...

Oh, the Big Brass hammer was two bucks :)
armstrong1.jpg
They'll clean up and go to work
Sad, that some dunce let that big bin of tools soak in water

One sale today thanks to FBM. I had arranged to pick these up today,as the seller and I work very different shifts. Combo wrenches should clean up decent. Line wrenches cleaned up very well, trays were pretty grimey.

Snagged a few items of interest today. Another Duro/S-K/??? 1930s 1/2" ratchet, an Upland 1/4" open head ratchet (did Thorsen make them?), Walden ratchet and breaker, Herbrand ignition wrench, Blue Point, Williams, Plomb, etc.

IMG_6188.jpg

Bill
The mystery 1/2” drive ratchet has the three bands of knurling consistent with S-K ratchets. I’m not sure about the Upland ratchet. There were a few manufacturers making very similar ones. I recently thought one was made by Thorsen and it turned out to be made by P&C. Are there Taiwan markings next to the Upland?

Honey-hole hunting was fairly productive. I only hit one place, as they've told me they need to thin the inventory and are willing to negotiate on prices--quite a bit, it turns out.

24" machinist's rule, marked $40:

53667713390_e769094c5b_b.jpg

I offered ten. Accepted. Good deal:

53667469033_d516093a57_b.jpg

I don't know what exactly this means:

53667609224_7197e4be30_b.jpg

but I'm sure I'm soon to learn.

I actually have use for that in the shop.

These are interesting:

53667251461_0e3cec2c6d_b.jpg

53667251441_c1d9fa7858_b.jpg

53667469018_593fe0f2a8_b.jpg

They're sharp enough to use! Which is good, as to sharpen them will require filing the peens off the ends of the screws securing the cutters. They should have plenty of cutting power, being double-purchase.

Another rule:

53667251451_5d2221a53d_b.jpg

53667251481_31c92c8ae7_b.jpg

I'm guessing that's not post-reunification Germany.

I now have two vintage metal folding rules, which, I believe, makes for 2/3 of a collection!

I've gotta get the electrolysis vat set up. I need to make one out of 4" PVC pipe for long rules!

If you measure that rule with another rule I'll bet you find it's actually 24 and 1/4" long! Some weird old metalworking patternmakers' thing where it gains an 1/8" every foot. I understand it and I still don't understand it! That's how weird it is.

Right you are!

I guess it'll just be a straight-edge for the shop. Kinda disappointing, really.

The way it was explained to me, if you are a patternmaker making a pattern for an object to be cast, you need to allow for the metal shrinkage during cooling. So the pattern has to be oversized by a certain amount (that depends on the metal being used). The most convenient way to do that is to use the correct 'shrink rule', where the markings on the rule take the shrinkage into account.

Thank you!

Too bad it makes this useless as a general shop tool--aside from a straight edge.

I hit up an auction today and ended spending 15 dollars. First purchase was this wheelbarrow air compressor and I paid $10 for it. They said it ran, when I went to start it I pulled until I was red in the face and it finally started and ran and worked well.

IMG_2535.jpeg
The second thing I bought was this 1984 briggs and stratton that somehow in the last 40 years had not managed to run.

It really is a shame about the paint because of where it sat.IMG_2547.jpeg

I did that using a much more difficult technique, on a longer DEwalt blow mold box and made it into a dedicated gun case for my Thompson Contender (14" barrels) worked great! I use a padlock to lock it for travel.

I have a set appropriate to the box although I need to repair the drill. Here is the set in the new box.

That's a win!

Thermos branded King Seeley lantern with Coleman glass

You made... a wise choice!

Craftsman metric set - 50¢

I paid 10X that for one missing one wrench today! you ****!

Oh, the Big Brass hammer was two bucks :)

Yep, you **** too!

These are interesting:

I have a Wiss set for flower cutting. Those may be more useful for when you want ot prune and toss aside one handed.

I'm guessing that's not post-reunification Germany.

I agree.

Outlaw--You buy copper pipe shorts? You gotta stop by the brewery some time! I'll load your truck up!

if well below scrap, cost, yes. these will be used for min projects where I just need a little piece, the larger will likely become vise jaw caps.

Good find on the Plomb stubby.

My favorite find! Aside from collector rarity, and not having a rotted plastic handle I was going to make one for actual use - this will go into a special tool kit I'm assembling for small/tight work...

Not much going on around town today, so I headed the 20 miles to the nearest city, and poked around. I had around eight or so stops planned, but the first two ended up being recycles of sales that have been going on for years now, so I kept going, and found the following at the third and sixth sales:
53667682929_256f536402_h.jpg
the third sale yielded the Winchester driver, while the sixth produced the SK wrench and ratchet, Proto DBE, and Starrett long punches. $5 for all of that.

The third sale was an old farmhouse, where they had leased off much of the land, but the people who lived there kept trying to do things as they always had, but as they got older things got away from them. Sad, but that is how proud people are. Not much in the way of tools when I got there, but in the basement I found these two cases:
53667535633_05daf8e7b2_h.jpg
Well, I knew what they were immediatly, and quickly paid for them.
53667780790_f45795b5c7_h.jpg
The bottom one is a generic double barrel shotgun hard case, which I will use for my BSA. The top one, however, is for a Browning BT99 trap and ***** two barrel set. $10 for both of them.

The other few sales I hit were either so poorly run as to be unshoppable, or had nothing of interest.

....
Well, not below my scrap cost!

I want to see how you make vise jaw pads from them. I have no shortage of 1 1/4 - 2" copper tubing.

Cut the length to the width of the jaw. Hacksaw or porta- band the length, and open them up. Clamp the "working surface" in the vise and form the rest to fit, trimming as needed/desired. If its a big enough copper tube, you can get both from one. (2" tube = > 6" of material)

Might just give that a try. Maybe right now. Or maybe I'll just have a beer...

In the corner of the Browning case, you can see a couple small items:
53666453902_85e89a3b89_h.jpg
these turned out to be Browning chokes, with choke wrench.

I also stopped at my man Abe's bookstore on the way home, where I have a lot of trade credit, and picked up the following:
53666445197_3bf691acb4_h.jpg
Up top is a copy of the Canterbury Tales, illustrated by Rockwell Kent, and the the other two are a treatise on ropework, and a reprint of an 1819 junior sea officers manual of rigging and other sailing trade work.

I also picked up this:
53667313901_497a06d222_h.jpg
the menu for a trains dinning car, circa 1968.

Another **** for Provincial! Wandered up to the flea market for a bit today and managed to spend more money than I planned on, there were quite a few tool vendors out.

Turned out to be a Craftsman day, was pretty excited about the early combo set in what I believe is the original box. If anyone has the smaller sizes of these combos (9/16, 1/2, 7/16) let me know and I'd be happy to buy or trade for them! Also picked up a BE set in a very crusty box from the same vendor. $12

The other 1/4" box at bottom right has some =v= sockets but I mostly just paid the 5 bucks for the box which is in pretty nice shape.
IMG_5397.jpg

I'm in the next two pics for $20, mostly because I can't help myself from overpaying for big Plomb sockets that I have no use for...

Ball peen is a Plumb, Proto LA DBE, and a bunch of Mac stuff that I'm hoping cleans up ok.
IMG_5398.jpg

HInsdale DBE, Bluepoint DOE and combo, Par X extension, Billings combo, and a Long C tappet. The obstruction DBE is a Merit, hoping someone can tell me what the weird little KR? Wilson thing is. Then there's the smallest OTC DBE I've run into so far, a Proto phillips, the Plomb sockets (2 of which are 3/4" drive) along with a few other random sockets and a 1/2" drive plug. Finally a couple Bonney pieces at right.

I'm familiar with Rocky mountain oysters. "Boneless Rocky Mountain Trout" have me worried.
