Gutters?

I'm getting ready to install gutters on my metal building. I saw a video where a guy just screwed them to the sheet metal. It seems to me, that one decent snow load would possibly rip the siding down or damage it. How does everyone attach their gutters?

Thanks
Todd

Possibly.

Been several new members in the last few weeks.

Only a fool would screw them into the sheet metal. There needs to be some sort of backing under the fascia or purlins.
Are you suspecting me of being a bot? I assure you, I am not. Just some guy, who at 50 is deciding to learn to do things themselves. So far this forum has been a very valuable resource. I had a feeling that youtube guy was a total hack. There was no way I was going to support gutters by sheet metal alone.

To the fascia board that's attached to the trusses.
There doesn't seem to be anything solid to screw into. I'm thinking I may need to unscrew the last roof screws, slip the bracket under and reattach roof screw.

Yes, it is. I'm realizing I should really specify that moving forward. Sorry about that.

Does it at least have rafter tails or trusses out at the fascia sheetmetal? If so, how far apart are they spaced? Is there an overhang? Typically, if you want gutters with that type of building, you select that option when ordering so that the appropriate framing is added on. Pictures of what you have may help here.

When I head up to the property, I'll take a few pictures. Yes the roof over hangs a few inches.

Yes, we have been having issues and this section of the forum has been hit fairly hard with new members asking very random questions.

A metal tube carport building is going to take a different perspective than a traditional stick frame or post frame.

Have you ever injured a human being, or through inaction, allowed a human being to come into harm?

Have you ever disobeyed orders given to you by a human being, unless it conflicted with number 1 above?

Have you ever had to protect your own existence, unless it conflicted with number 1 or number 2 above?

I was just in colorado watching some condo construction up in the mountains. It looked like many roofs had what appear to be snow and ice guards. I've also seen "gutter caps" that would make it harder for a big piece of ice to catch on the gutter lip.

Last, I saw several gutters with heat strips in them....

I need to add them to my metal building and am also confused as to how its done. Only advice I got that made sense was try to put them a little low so that the snow will go over them. I only have about a inch overhang so I am not sure how that works. Might have to take out the first row of screws to add some support or even tuck a short piece of metal under along the whole edge to add more overhang.

Sounds like something a bot would say... ;) :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, that just made me laugh!

And I've got the gutter guys installing roof flashing right now. There is more work to a good gutter system than I realized. They're earning their money.

Thank you! I figured that part out. I'll be placing 2x3s inside to screw into. Now I need to make a post about roof overhang into gutter. Thanks for your input on this

Ugh. It's so hard to find contractors where I'm at. I figured out that I can place 2x3s inside and use those to screw into. Sorry for the delayed response. I have alerts on and I never get notifications.

A few weeks ago I posted about how to install gutters when the facia is hollow. I decided that a good option is to drop 2x3s behind on the inside and scre into them. 1 problem solved. Second question:
The roof pannels over hang by 2.25 inches. I bought 5 inch gutters. Now I'm concerned that with the overhang being just about halfway into the gutter, the remaining 2.75 inches wouldn't be enough to accommodate a heavy downpour. Am I overthrowing this? Would the fix be

A snap a line and shorten the overhang ?
B get 6 or even 7 inch gutters?
C shim the gutters out a bit ( sounds like total hack to me).
D don't think so much and just install them?

Thank You folks!
Todd

Edit: I just noticed there was a recent thread on this exact topic. Sorry about that.

I have the same style building and went with 6" seamless on both sides. With my limited schedule at the time I chose the seamless. If I had tried to install the BBS gutters I would have been at it for weeks. On mine I believe the hangers are tucked under the roofing then screwed in. They've been up a couple of years and zero problems.

Thank You. I just bought materials for 1 side. I'm putting wood behind on the inside and screwing into that. When I do the front, I will consider this... thanks!
