Well, Sunday was the culmination of the Wild Warehouse Weekend. I went with my neighbor, who was like a kid in a candy store. Everyone was let in in a more-or-less orderly fashion, but we were near the back of the pack--@tin medic was near the front... I was interested in the pile of antique, ornately cast levels near the back of the warehouse, but by the time I got there, there were none to be seen. Alternately disappointed and relieved that they were gone (they were tagged between $100 - $120) I began poking around in the nearby bins. A few minutes later, I glanced at one of the shelves and saw a 12" L.L. Davis Adjustable Spirit Level, Plumb and Inclinometer sitting in the shadow of a box where someone had stashed it out of view. Even though it had a $120 tag, I put it in my bag hoping I could get a bulk price when I presented it for the final tally.
Continuing on, I looked through the wooden levels and found an 8" rosewood & brass level from Stratton Brothers (Pat MCH 1, 1870). I spent the next three hours digging, being mostly very selective, but occasionally impulsive. At that point, my neighbor found me and said he had hit the wall--but he still managed to pick up three more things on the way to the cashier... I walked up to one of the estate agents and they poked around in my bag while I held it open. I almost fell over when I heard "How about $20?"

BTW, above is the only shot of the Disston No. 10 Handsaw Jointer

The group below is currently swimming in EvapoRust along with a few Yankee bits from the S-K socket box:
Dudly Tool Co. Spoke Wrench. Less ornate, but apparently more desirable than the Rollfast version I found earlier this year.
Another Geo. E. GAY Mfg ratcheting screwdriver. This one is 5" with a patent date July 29, 1902--his last.
Another Schollhorn parallel pliers, 4" and much lighter weight than the 4.5" pliers found on Day 2.
Snap-on V-21A Valve Adjusting Tool with SW-200, 5/8" socket. Both date coded 1944.
3" advertising caliper for Acorn Brand Oils & Greases. Flip side has the scale and ARTHUR W. CORNING, NEW YORK.
5" COES Monkey Wrench. Cute as hell!
No. 2627 (and otherwise Unbranded) keyhole saw
May 12 24b.jpg

6" Lectrolite Pipe Wrench. I think it's nickel plated.
Nice North Bros Yankee No. 35 Ratcheting Screwdriver. So shoot me. I like ratcheting screwdrivers...
Three Stanley Screwdrivers. Top one's branding is obliterated but I believe it is the same as the middle driver: 100 Plus, No. 1001 Standard.
Middle one is a Sweetheart from '23-'32. Third one is a No. 146
May 12 24c.jpg

Here's the top plate of the Stratton Brothers level. The top bubble glass is in great shape, but the end glass was replaced by a PO--with one with green fluid!
May 12 24e.jpg

The day's prize, the 12" L.L. Davis Adjustable Spirit Level, Plumb and Inclinometer. There's still a lot of the gilding--although in this picture it doesn't really show.
May 12 24d.jpg

The Japanning is cracked in several places and is heavily applied to the point much of the casting detail is lost. Those two big blobs along the top on either side of the compass are supposed to be some kind of flower...
May 12 24f.jpg

Still looks cool in the right light!

Sales have slowly been picking up here, was raining every weekend for a while.
since everything comes in threes, picked up a NOS kohler KT17 series 2, and a NOS Briggs and Stratton 12.5HP vertical shaft for next to nothing, they were sitting in a warehouse for 20 years.
No pictures, but I also got a bunch of IBM typewriter tools for $7, sold half of them for $250

Had my first job of the year that took me by the spray paint garage sale. Guy's always having a sale and he gives any bare metal on tools larger than pliers a thick coat of black spray paint.

Usually he has something interesting but I then have to work through the paint before finally being about to actually clean it up.

Fortunately today had only one painted item. Also total was $14 which seems like a good deal.

Williams wrench roll, Bench top 3/8 spinner(says it's a full shank with female end so it's potentially more useful than most), and a Vaughn hammer(with at least 2 coats of paint).

That's a great haul, but the Davis is definitely the gem!

I believe that, for spending $20 on all that, you richly deserve a "YOU ****!"

Here is a recent haul of 3 auction lots, shipped out from Nebraska. Quite happy with one of these, should save me a bunch of money in the long run, can you guess which?

1st up, 2 Tuffy Screwdrivers, in USER condition. Last 2 I bought were NOS, and I would feed bad using them. These two included mushrooming damage, missing ball bearing latches, but came with extra dirt, for free. Also in this lot was a Whisler screw or nail starter.

The next lot included several different "sets" of bits, 4x Hargrave brace bits, including three plug cutters and 1 screwdriver bit, a box of Goodell Pratt German Pattern (gimlet) Bits, and another box of spur dowel bits by Russel Jennings.

PXL_20240514_205520612-X2.jpg

The final lot included a bunch of level stuff, including many bare vials, that I hope can be used to repair a few levels with missing or broken vials. Interesting here are 2 Octagon Line & Surface levels, in tin boxes, patented Feb 22, 1921, and made by Frank B Hall, Geneva Ohio, a Magnelite Level Makers right angle holding a pair of adjustable vials that you attach to a board to make a giant level, and disappointingly, a 150mm machinist type level, but the bubble is dry (I thought it was a sighting level with sheath in the pic), by Mass Industrie Reichenbach i.V. (Reichenbach im Vogtland) rated at 1 line =0.6mm per meter. (Slightly less than a Starrett 98 at 0.42mm / meter). Also a bunch of level glass vial covers, and a couple of modern cheapies tossed in too.

I may have some parts if you get into it. I think I have a gasket kit for it. I will look around.
Its definitely going to be a restore/display project. I haven't done more than get an initial layer of grease/dirt off, spray some bolts with penetrating oil, and peek under the shroud so far.

I currently have the 10hp Cast Iron Briggs for my new to me Allis Chalmers Big Ten tore apart in the garage waiting on some parts to undo whatever the previous owner did :rolleyes2. I told myself I'm not starting on the WMB until after the tractor is back together.

I've been mulling this over, and don't think I've ever seen gimlets or doweling bits NIB before, and the plug cutters are as rare as hens teeth too.

Ones and twos of gimlets aren't uncommon, or even a half dozen in somebody's old canvas bit roll. And NIB? Still wrapped in paper from the seller? Doweling bits are rarer, I think I've found only a small handful over the years, all singles. The plug cutters for a brace are damned unusual too. Maybe the most unusual of the three. (Actually, I have one inherited plug cutter for a brace, and haven't touched it in decades because I couldn't get it to work. So, I don't know how hard I've looked for them. Now I am going to have to try it again.)

So I want to say that those two little boxes are way unusual. Kewl!

I am an auction junkie. This week I scored a lot for under $50 that included a push button propane torch(need that anyways) and this new old stock still in the friggin box craftsman toolbox and SAE socket set from the 90s by the looks of it. They are too pretty for my filthy hands so they are off to eBay to find a new home and a nice clean shelf somewhere to sit on. IMG_2854.jpegIMG_2864.jpeg

We attended an estate sale, 3 1/2 weekends, actually, for a 91 year old deceased hoarder. Bought a ton of stuff cheap (will post some follow on pix later), but these NOS Knipex in the original packaging are some of my favorite scores.

I saved all the cardboard packaging. Made in “Western Germany” too, so they’re vintage!

It's Bulk Pickup season here so I have been devoting all my efforts to "curbside shopping" for the last 2 weeks. I've picked lots of household stuff but limited garage related stuff.

This evening I picked this Eagle Mfg. No 1301 - 1 Gallon Flammable materials can.

20240515_201851.jpg

I need to update my Garage thread with my non-garage related items.

Cheers

Stopped at a thrift store in a nearby city, a place we don't get to very often, and got 2 wire wheel brushes for $3.98 each. They are actually something I was looking for. I hope the quality is good, but at the price I couldn't pass it up.20240515_200032.jpg

Nice find!!!! Please post close-ups, including the marking, on the wood screwdrivers thread.
the Danielson "44" pliers I got today have remnants of BLO on them - are these GMTX period correct?
I wish it was a production year reference! Unfortunately, I don't think so. I have a pair, but they have the prewar gripping pattern, not the herringbone. What the "44" signifies is unknown. Anniversary, perhaps.
Next was the P. Lowentraut "20th Century" Wrench,
Nice find. There are a few examples of that contraption down on the VB.
...did go with this little punch, markings are Ash England...[ ]...
The irony of the makers name as it was COPD that got him after years of smoking...
Sorry to hear about your dad. Your astute bittersweet observation is a good sign you are coping in the best possible way. (y)

Got this Enerpac set this week. All of it was going to the scrap bin since the company bought several new complete outfits.
The pump works but some of the connectors are mismatched.
Geez, just saw this note. The mismatched fittings seems to indicate 4 ton v 10 ton in the Porto Power world. Don't go too nuts changing them.

We only got to two sales today. Although parking was next to impossible, we found a few things at a Berkeley estate sale.IMG_4846.jpeg
The drill index was Huot in a configuration I hadn’t seen before. IMG_4855.jpegThe Swanson square was likely made in China although there is no COO indicated. Very sad. IMG_4856.jpeg
Fresh looking Channellock lineman’s pliers.IMG_4847.jpegIMG_1918.png
I thought the little toy truck my wife found for the Grandaughter was a VW but although made in Western Germany it wasn’t. It sure looked like a VW from the side IMG_4850.jpegIMG_4852.jpeg
The K-D tool was one I didn’t have. IMG_4853.jpegIMG_1919.jpeg
Most of the Craftsman tools were =v= marked except the DBE wrench.IMG_4854.jpeg
The second sale in Walnut Creek was worthless.
