Milwaukee M18 Battery Issue

I have an XC5.0 M18 battery

Used it alot demo-ing a deck with my Sawzall two weeks ago

Power button says it dead b8t when I put it on the charger, within 2 minutes it's green.......yet it's still dead

Battery is maybe 2 years old

I tried jumping it with a fully charged M18 with no luck

Any ideas or suggestions?

Sounds to me like a dead cell you can open it up and measure each cell individually they should all be the same (reasonably close to each other). Dead cell will be easy to diagnose.

Yep, dead cells or out of balance. Check the voltage of the 5 banks to see if any are dead or severely out of balance. I was lucky & I only had unbalanced banks on 2 of my M18 5.0s which are 9 years old. Rebalanced them & they have been working fine ever since.

But in your case if only 2 yrs old, I would send it in for warranty. The same happened to my M18 8.0 but it was barely still in warranty so I sent it in. MW sent me a new one.

It has a warrantee so use it. 1-800-SAWDUST is your friend. One caution. If you have the receipt you're golden otherwise they will go by the date of manufacture on the battery and that might be older than three years. If that's the case you're screwed. This is why you should also keep the receipts when you buy Milwaukee batteries.

As above, open it up and check the individual banks of cells. I’d gutted that one or more is low. Change them up separately and you should be good to go. Happens occasionally on one of mine if it discharges too low. I make sure I only use it on my impact driver

There's a date code on the battery. The warranty lasts 3 years from date of purchase (based on receipt), or in the case of no receipt, then it's based on the production date on the battery. Check that, if it's within 3 years, you might be good.

I wouldn't tell them you found it in a pawn shop though, the warranty might only apply to original buyer, technically.

That is an older generation battery, the date code on those is the heat stamp on top of the battery, first 2 digits is the year. Regardless, it's well out of warranty.

How the hell do you beat up a battery that badly? Did you run it over with a bulldozer? That battery is likely at least 10 years old.

Demo'd a 25' x 20' deck with a Sawzall

Pawn shop batteries are half the price of new

Looks like it's time to shop on ebay for an open box or used one

Open box XC5.0 batteries are $47-$55 shipped

In the meantime I'll crack open the old battery to do some inspection
