Good afternoon! Newb here... buying a house in Central IL and it has a nice shed with it that already has electric ran to it. I believe it's about 12x16. (photos attached).

My goal is to turn it into a cigar lounge so I will be insulating and putting up some ship lap type paneling.

My thought was to use R13 faced insulation in the walls and then cover with the paneling.

I will have some ventilation and plan to have a window A/C unit for the summer and some small heater for the winter. Is there anything else I may be missing? Shed 3.jpg

Long ago, maybe 40 years, I was in the basement room of a heavy cigar smoker. He and his buddies would gather there to enjoy their smokes. To keep his wife happy and minimize the odor permeating the upstairs, he installed a through the wall 12 inch exhaust fan.

With modern fan motors, you should be able to use that idea and not have a fan that’s too loud.

Yeah my thought was to use a high flow bathroom fan that i've seen people use. I'd also have a air cleaner/filter in there as well.

I did a partial remodel of a very small bathroom that had no exhaust and no window. The owner didn’t want to cut into the ancient wood shingle roof.

I installed a Panasonic through the wall fan. Most people couldn’t even tell if it was running while standing next to it.

If you're going all in, are you going to do one end as a walk-in humidor with glass partition and humidity control? That would be cool but I don't know if you are that big of a cigar guy or just a dude looking for a place to smoke occasionally that won't piss of the wife.

Hahah. No wife to piss off. It’s mostly to smoke when I want since I’m not gonna be close to my cigar club lounge. Prob also store my bourbon stuff since the house is a bit small.

Install duplex outlets every 4 ft. to give you flexibility in usage. Add overhead boxes for ceiling lighting. Figure out where the LED tv is going on the wall, and wire for it, and the sound system. An outside light at the entry, if you don't have one. Maybe floodlights outside, individually switched, w/photocells. A RING doorbell or similar for security, or similar.

I remember my grandfather liked to smoke cigars. He had a floor standing ashtray like this one next to his favorite chair in the living room. This was back in the ‘50s.

So, where are you located? Any openings in the group?

I built a home basement office cigar lounge in my basement during covid. I used a remote inline exhaust fan ducted into the office and outside. It's variable speed and can only be heard on high speed. The room is next to a stairs so I was able to build a recessed area for the humidor I already had.

Yes..of course I got a permit..lol

You want insulation in the ceiling too of course, that should be at least R38. Is there any way to insulate the floor? It will be pretty chilly on the feet without it. You should run a heat loss calculation to make sure how much heat you'll need - there are a number of calculators online.

just adding to what others have suggested.

  • The door opens out so if you want to add a bit of insulation to the floor you good easily use any kind of basement flooring product to insulate and build a new floor on top of what is there. Of course, a bit of nice carpet might be just as good but it would tend to soak up the odors.

  • The idea of adding outlets every 4 feet is a good one. I'd do that and use floor lamps for general lighting. Overhead lights are nice when you need to illuminate the whole area but aren't as nice if you are just sitting there enjoying a smoke.l Having both the outlets and some overhead lighting might be nice should you or somebody else want to convert it back into something more like a work space.

  • To help with the energy loss I have seen people create covers or boxes to cover the exhaust fan when it isn't in use.

  • You didn't mention how much power you have out there but if it is a single 15 amp circuit you might have some issues running a/c, heater, humidor, lights, tv, etc.

  • The walls look to be build from 2x4 at best which would limit you to R13. If you wanted to insulate more you could add a layer of foam insulation board between the R13 and your paneling. You also use the foam board on the ceiling to help you get additional insulation up there. The R38 suggestion was good but more would be better.

  • If it isn't already ventilated on the roof be sure to add something to ventilate the attic.

  • I suspect the door is going to **** as it looks to be a pretty minimal shed door. If it is a standard size I'd look at getting a nice insulated door with a proper threshold and weather strip all around.

That permit does not appear to be finished......also, did you get a permit to put your permit behind a finished wall?

Yeah!

True story:
When I remodeled the master bathroom, I needed structural and electrical permits (I get that). I was replacing rotted floor joists (leaky tiled shower that was 50 years old) and replacing every inch of the old wiring and running a new dedicated 20 amp circuit 50 feet back to a new sub panel.
What surprised me was that I also had to get a mechanical permit because I was installing a regular bathroom exhaust fan with ducting going through the attic to the outdoors.

Has anyone used foam insulation in their small shed's? THere's a local company i used before that did a great job when I had them blow in some attic insulation and I thought about getting a bid from them.

Are you talking about spray foam? Is the plan to close up the ceiling or leaving the rafters exposed?

If you are wanting to keep the rafters exposed, then I assume you want to spray foam the roof. Depending on if you use open or closed cell spray foam, I think it gives an R value per inch of something like 3.5 and 7 (worth double checking, I could be wrong). It appears that those are 2x4's along the roof line, so you'd see anywhere between R12 to R25.

Being in IL, you'll want to have a decent amount of insulation in the ceiling (R38 at a minimum), especially if you want to keep it heated during winter and cooled during the summer. If you are planning on closing up the ceiling, I'd probably just DIY the job with R38 batt insulation. I did that in my garage and have been very happy with it so far.

You have a great start to a nice Man-Room.
There is room for a long narrow poker table and folding chairs.
I had this set up with a quiet-running industrial high-quality exhaust fan.
Scotch, beer, cigars, and Hold-Um poker. It was a popular neighborhood hangout.
A small liquor cabinet, beer fridge, and Bluetooth music complete it.
I also had my gun safe bolted to the floor in a corner.
The room became known as the ATF room.

Not sure what your budget is, but you might consider a heat exchanger, as I imagine a high air cycle would be desired.

Its going to be silly expensive. Small job still has all the fixed costs but less work to spread it out.

You could diy with Froth packs. Wouldn't be hard at all, just need to suit up
