Almost looks like some kids spray painted it.lol Looks awesome now.
I'm not sure what it was,but i'm really glad it came off and I'm not dropping $500 on a high end reblue.( I was already looking at Ford's of Crystal river FL ,$500 and a 6 month + lead)
Well done Andy!
Thanks, I was going to Pm for advice to you and Beemer but the Hoppes wipes seemed very safe. My main concern was to not damage anything further.

I’m usually not lucky enough to find good deals very often. But I came across a used Snap-on 3/8 in drive 12-point SAE 7/8 inch deep impact socket yesterday for $3 before tax. $3.30 after tax. It’s still in pretty good shape for being used. Just needs to be cleaned up a little. Got it at a local surplus merchandise warehouse. Looked it up on-line this evening. Looks like a new Snap-on part number GSF281 is about $43.50 on the US Snap-on web page. Not too bad and I guess I couldn’t pass it up for $3. Now it’s the one and only Snap-on impact socket I own. I hope this isn’t the start of an expensive Snap-on collection.

Wow @Old Radar suckkks! That williams set is so cool and the Plomb is awesome too! Also congrats on the Wayne spinner! I found a 6" extension for you but I can't find a ratchet, I might have sold them all but I have a couple more places to check:unsure:

Dragged the kids around a bit this weekend with slim pickins. Paid first day prices at an estate sale for this stuff, I think it was a little less than $40 after tax.

These SK sets were strewn all over, I don't know why the ES companies don't take 5 minutes to put them together, they'd be able to sell them for a lot more. The 3/8 set is complete other than that the spark plug socket is the wrong size. The 1/4 set just needs a rat and short extension which I have.
IMG_5699.jpg

Bunch of misc sockets, the little Williams T is a 9/32" which is kinda interesting, couple Snap on bits, a minty Proto 1/2" ratchet, and a few Plomb pieces round out the crowd. There were also a few Koken and other Japan made sockets but those are in the goodwill pile.

I have the Indestro (flat grip) version of that Duro - one of my favorite ratchet. (I just used it changing plugs last Thursday)

And yes; (gasp!) hard to breath riht now!
It is a really nice feeling ratchet! I look forward to using it.

I hadn't bought hardly any hand tools in years and of course things went missing over time.
Earlier this year I went ahead bought myself new 1/4" and 3/8" socket sets, and new metric and SAE wrenches just so I had decent complete sets to use without have to search for them or improvise.
Now when I go to sales I'm not looking for anything specific, just vintage/better/different versions of what I have, or things I find interesting but may not need. It's pretty fun!

At the same time I have acquired a 60 year old garden tractor and several vintage/older small engines (mostly from garage sales) that all need or needed some work. I find I really enjoy using the old hand tools on older equipment. It just feels good.

part 2 after:

Wow, that's an amazing transformation. Nice job saving yourself $500 (and 6 months of waiting???)!

Still basking in the afterglow of last month's warehouse sale--and the on-going cleanup--I had no intention of going to any sales this week. That resolution lasted until Friday, mid-morning, when I was casually perusing the ES.org site--you know, just in case...

The same company that ran the warehouse sale was in charge of this one and the pictures of tools were enough to make me jump in the car. I got there about an hour and a half after opening and they had had a brisk morning of sales. Most of the small socket sets were gone and the few that remained were empty or full of offshore tools.
I picked up the S-K Wayne 1/4" spinner I needed for last week's find along with the Papa Bear & Baby Bear (12" & 1") of Stanley's 100 Plus series of screwdrivers. I think the Indestro 889PK Ignition and Hobbyist set is unused, but missing the small screwdriver. The Starrett 93B tap handle, #473 thread gauge and #72 feeler gauge cleaned up nicely.
Next was an assortment of Snap-on 1/4" sockets and a 3/8" FV40A Spinner.
Finally, under a pile of stuff and completely hidden from view was the gray box with a Diamond <W> Williams socket set--including (for once!) the tommy bar! The M-110 spinner was found on another table. The sockets all have the wide band style of knurling.

Jun 21 24a.jpg

I started making my way to the agent to get a price for everything when I went by a set of shelves that I had passed at least six times previously. This time I noted the edge of a slim reddish case that was covered with three or four cardboard boxes. I was at once happily surprised at my luck and slightly dismayed by the thought of yet another quest to complete a socket set--but there was no way I was leaving a Plomb box that big behind! I got another surprise when I hefted it off the bottom shelf--the thing weighed a ton!
Jun 21 24b.jpg
First three columns are marked with stars fore & aft of the size stamp, indicating manufacture by Indestro. Includes a 1/2" to 5/8" adapter.
Next column is Plomb, including a ground down drag link.
Next are three Duro and five Williams sockets.
A boat load of unmarked hex-drive sockets.
Two Blackhawks, two Snap-on, two Bonney, a Challenger and a shiny "Power Torque" from somewhere off shore.
The little sliding hex socket has no markings and the 1/2" square drive ell is a German Gedore.
The two things at the case corner are the hacksawed remains of a Williams 3/8 extension and a completely ground down 6pt socket.
Total on the day was $43.30.

You ****!

I picked through the red box from Friday's swap meet, and pulled out all the Wizard 1/2 drive stuff. I found a tommy bar hiding in the bottom of the box, so it is a bonus!

What was in there;

After I filled it in with a 3/4 Wizard, a 13/16 Indestro Super, and a 1-1/8 Wizard:
20240623_194629.jpg
7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 19/32, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 25/32, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, 1", 1-1/16, 1-1/8 sockets. 13/16 deep socket, ratchet, extension, and tommy bar. Most should clean up nicely.

Went to the local bootsale here in England, had a bit of a rummage and came out with these from different sellers, but oddly all the tools were a £1 ($1.26) a pop! A scrub up later and here we are:

IMG_6594.jpeg

Record No4 G-clamp, King **** (!) 3” adjustable spanner, Dolmar chainsaw file handle, Fisco 10 foot tape measure and the unusual one is a 17mm HV insulated spanner by Insulated tools dated 05/03. (These are usually a British spanner inside).

Corgi toys Lamborghini Muria No 342 (from 69’ - 72) was a measly £3 and worth every penny!

Got these 2 genuine Swiss army knives for a buck on an online estate auction, local pickup. This type of stuff tends to fly under the radar, but I love these and they are useful. Good gifts too. Probably $50 retail value.

Yard sale with some tools. I only picked up a Craftsman beam type torque wrench appearing to be new in box with styrofoam inserts and instruction manual. No copyright or date code in the manual but I'm guessing 1960's from the car illustration on the side of the box. I bought it to crosscheck another torque wrench I already have that's never been calibrated. $15.

This was actually from a week ago, as it was way too hot for any sane person to hold a garage sale this past weekend.
-1/4" craftsman socket set.
-3/4" cook's patent bit
-Milwaukee hole saw set with hardly any prior use.

The woman at the sale where I got the bit said almost old the tools were sold early, giving me the horrible thought I might have missed a roll with the rest of a set of Cook's patent bits.

Nice scores PF!

I'd have killed to have found a set of good hole saws "back in the day" like that. Now I only add if they are super cheap or big sizes I don't have - I have some over 4" - I think one is 6"? But having a selection of common sizes is good!

Does the ratchet in the Craftsman set have a drive? pic looks odd.

To ensure I hadn't inadvertently overlooked any drive tools or sockets from the Plomb set--or any of the other represented brands, I went back the following day. I carefully combed the tool tables, but the closest I came was a 3/8" Plomb WF-19 12" extension. I came across what I thought was the Mama Bear Stanley 100 Plus screwdriver and tossed it in my bag without a careful glance. It turned out to be a Great Neck imposter. Next came 1-each Snap-on A-2 & A-4 adapters, a SO 1/4d deep socket and a Williams 3/8" ratchet adapter.
Finally came a fairly minty Lectrolite No. 1711R combo roll. It only had minor spots of rust, most notably on the open end edge of the largest wrench. Total $24.36.

It works. It is just the reflection I think.
Almost the first thing I did after getting home was chuck the utterly useless Harbor Freight hole saws.

Someone bought that whole set to use the 1 1/2" ONCE! Great score!

Craigslist freebie - 1999 Snapper Hi-Vac self-propelled model with a 6HP B&S Quantum. Deck is shot, but has good wheels, handlebars, axles, and all of the self-drive mechanism is there. I might strip all that off and move it to my deck when I feel ambitious. (They're quite an affair to put back together.) Engine runs. Fuel tank is almost full. I'll pull the motor off and mount it on this old AYP deck and sell it.
Sold that MTD Saturday to a young man, so .... wth?
Snapper and bare deck 062424.jpg

(* the black one is all moldy from sitting on the north side of the house for a year - that'll wash right off. painted flat black. *)

Here is the 4oz Plomb Plumb ball peen I picked up yesterday, lightly cleaned up.

I think it’s super cool, especially because I didn’t notice the mark until I got home.

Edit- Now that I’m looking at it, I guess this is a Plumb not a Plomb. It looked like the u was connected at the top before I cleaned it and had done any real research, but it definitely matches the Plumb logo.

Last Sunday I picked up the Chesco T handle hex wrenches. Same garage sale I grabbed a gear wrench indexing pry bar, Irwin chain vise grips with a chain extension, a circle cutting a attachment for an oxy-acetylene torch, 1/2” Proto ratchet, and a new Mathey-Dearnan 4”x6’ wrap around. All for $1 each.

I'd say that's a real "you ****" since the USD/Canadian conversion you only spent about $3 USD. LOL

My neighbour down the road hit that garage sale on the Saturday and picked up a few things. I walked the dog past him Sunday morning and he told me about it. The guy holding the sale was a retired Millwright. He wasn't there Sunday but his wife was. Most stuff was picked through so I grabbed a few things. I absolutely did not need any of it because being a retired welder I still have enough chain grips and wrap arounds to take with me to my grave.

Unusual for me, but picked up an item outside of my local carboot sale (that's this Sunday)
Record 52, was seized when I got it, but a minute after a spray with wd40 and it's back in action. Already have a 52 1/2 so no need of this, but the price was good and can always pass it on to my brother. Not sure if this will just get a good cleaning or a strip and paint job yet (thinking hot pink? ;-)) probably just a clean, well see how it goes.
Minor chip from back jaw, but everything else is good on it.

Hopefully Sunday will add a little more rust iron to my collection of rusty iron.
West of Ireland, if its not rusty when you buy it, it will be by the time you get it home!
And some afters, I decided against the hot pink, for now...

Finally made a stop at the nearby ReStore after what seems like weeks. Definitely walked out with a lighter wallet, but well worth it. A little over $30 for everything and all US made. Two Ridgid ball peen hammers, channellock 440, 6LN DeWitt vise grip, 3” Brink and Cotton c-clamp and three SK sockets.
