Remove Garage Coating that Contractor Extended Outside the Garage Door

The contractor that did my garage floor decided to extend the epoxy floor out to the first expansion joint outside the garage doors. It's fading due to UV exposure and I want to remove it versus painting it again. It's only about 3 - 10" strips so a grinder seems like overkill. Would obviously want to get a straight line so it looks nice. Someone told me to use a wire cup on a grinder. What is the best way to do this so I get good results?

Use a circular saw with a segmented diamond masonry blade set very shallow, have a couple of guys stand on either end of a straight 2x4 acting as a fence and score the coating with the saw. This will get you to about 5-6" on either end then switch to an oscillating multi-tool with a diamond masonry blade/s to finish it off. Grind off the coating up to that scored line with a variable speed 7" angle grinder diamond cup wheel combo. A quality wire cup wheel may do it if the coating is sufficiently degraded. The 7" wheel and variable speed will give you greater control to limit (not eliminate...) gouging. The oscillating multi-tool can be used to clean up anything not reachable with the grinder.

I've removed this stuff with a 4.5 grinder and abrasive (sandpaper) disk. I'm sure a wheel grinder would work as well. It may not match the existing concrete after removal though.

This actually works better than a diamond cup... 80grit. It's been about 10 years since I've done this myself, here's to another 10!

We taped off and applied AcryliSeal 3501 afterwards, came out looking very good but it's only available in 5 gal so unless you've got other stuff to seal I'd look for another topical sealer.

AG - can you send me a link to the type of sandpaper dish you are talking about for a grinder? I am finding that there are multiple types.

Ok, that helps. Nothing special just a sanding disk that fits a grinder. Got it.

Is there something special about a grinder versus a random orbit sander?? Just curious as I have both ......

use the angle grinder, orbital is too light weight.
