I looked for a branding everywhere, hoping for one, so I could possibly date it, but couldn't find any mark. I would say prewar or wartime. Certainly older than 60s. There were a few for sale on Etsy and the like that are identical, but none of those are identified either.
When I was a kid (70s), you knew your desk was one of the really old ones when it had the hole like that for an inkwell. The school itself dated back to 1933.

I didn't think much of the estate sale I hit today after looking at the posted pictures. Glad I went and prices were very very good. The most expensive item was the 33sj Simplex vise at $40. NOS meyers HJ50S pump and NOS Kawasaki generator $25 each. NOS Yankee vise $15. Griswald Odorless cast iron skillet and the rest of the items came were $20. Wish I got there earlier.

Only one sale listed on Craigslist in the area so the neighbors and I checked it out. Most of the tools were of the garden variety and held no interest whatsoever. The seller had a nice early ‘70s Craftsman gray and red toolbox stack in the garage and I complimented him on it and that led to a look through of the box. He had forgotten that he had some of the tools and said he would be willing to let some go. I ignored the old braces and bit but picked up two speeders and a non GMTK but wartime DBE Duro-Chrome wrench. My neighbor picked up a Craftsman 1/4” drive speeder. The 1/2” drive speeder turned out to be a Plomb 5480 and the 3/8” drive speeder was a diamond logo S-K 45181.IMG_5362.jpeg

Slipped out one yard sale "clearing dad's Garage" - I had hope but got some oddball finds.

Mechanich's gloves in Camo, A USB plug, (I'm always looking for another) and a hat/coat rack. I'm not fond of the back plate and may take the horns of and put them into a nice oak piece.

I got two sets of these:

And came with 2 of these light bulbs in a padded case:

Y3-bag.jpg

Assemble the 3 pieces and you get:

Y4-Ref.jpg

The Bulbs are LED and have 4 possible settings: Dim, bright white, mid yellowish, and mid blueish Hues. I'l have to play with then and my crummy little Kodak.

$20 all in

Went to a flea market that usually has a few guys with some old tools but not this time. Got a roll of window screen repair tape that one hardware seller had but nothing else of interest or usage to me. One guy had some generic signage he said he picked up when the local division of the Budd Company closed down. This qualified for my budget garage art program, along with a New Mexico license plate which he claimed that all the paint was naturally sandblasted off by the desert winds. That'll go up on the garage rafters too. By accident I came across a Budd Company metal ruler the next day that I forgot I had. Budd was a Philadelphia metal fabricator mostly known for building rail cars.

I got a great start on the student desk, but I am late to my LEFT-BEHIND's.

Pic 1 & 2: I liked the Danny Thunderbolt mascot on these O-ring containers, but the guy was insane ($5 for each, $35 for the whole case).
Pic 3 & 4: I might've sprung for the feets-don't-fail-me-now Handy Andy box if "ALAN" hadn't scratched his name in the lid.
Pic 5: I was thinking of @ctuai, but the lap harp (Philadelphia maker) was too expensive.
Pic 6: For @four.cycle, a Whitaker (but different than the other Whitaker, I think) battery tool, DATAMP entry here.

Marty ***** for his Griswold odorless skillet.

Hey @Private Lugnutz if your son has 1 or more campaign medal(s), might consider painting it/them on the crossbar(s) of the seat. Might be too militaristic for the women-folk, but might liven up a largely OD "flavor." Options...

Had the day off yesterday and did some running around with very little to show for it.

The WD40, Duro Chrome Circle X 2013, Wright rat and ext, and perfect handle screwdriver came from a hoarder sale that showed a lot of promise but didn’t have much in my wheelhouse. $5

The linesman pliers are super crusty and not sure what they are yet but I like this style handle. $1

The two little combos were from a ridiculously priced “pro” estate sale, I only paid up for them cause I need the 1/2” Mac for a set and I can never leave a Plomb behind. $4 Oh wait, I did leave a nice Plomb 1/2” breaker behind cause it had a $25 price tag on it!!!

Hoping for better luck today

Estate, garage, thrift ($25): Magnifying desk lamp; Disston D23 crosscut (1940-47); WB|W Ladle; Seymour Smith #119 Snap-cut anvil pruners; H&C Disston Philda saw-knife; 3 Revere Ware double-ring sauce pans; Nespresso milk frother.

Supposedly the saw-knife was used for amputation during the civil war, fortunately just an ebay myth. Still made around that time period, just like the supposed civil war fork I found last post.

Snerk. I had something more folky in mind, but that's actual a neat clip.

I haven't been down there in years but there's not a dry eye in the place when the ladies take the stage with lap harps, autoharps, and dulcimers in Waretown, NJ, in the heart of the Pinelands.

^ that's too bad about the price. my mother brought a gizmo home kind of like that one day - it had "hammers" that hit the strings when you pressed a key - we played with that thing for years when we were kids. made a weird tone - like the thing in the Doors "Alabama Song" - great fun.

Same, @pfaustus. When schools were made of stone and looked like prisons or garrisons.

Probably designed and built by the same companies.

That's not a brick/rock hammer, it's a sheet Metal hammer.

As Outlaw pointed out, that is a "tinner's" hammer. They come in very handy.

I know, I didn’t want to correct the guy who was nice enough to leave it there lol

I definitely didn't remember the type of hammer correctly. Could have sworn it was a brick hammer, senility is starting early 😂😂

My feedback was: How do you guys know what he plans to hit with it???

That's what I was thinking, but Mrs Lugz put the nix on that. I think my son would also like it, but DIL might turn up her nose.

Well, I am really leaning that way after disassembly. (See Pics.) The beige was not original, and "the brown" was rusty OD. :) Everything steel was OD. And not just OD, but a deep, glorious, late wartime shade of OD that would actually look really, really good on a jeep. Not that OD wasn't popular outside of the military, but I wouldn't be surprised if this came out of Dix.

Here's the kicker... this grandboy belongs to my son who is the West Pointer and doctor. He is still on active duty. Just made Lieutenant Colonel, just re-assigned to Walter Reed. They've been in their new house 2 weeks.

I think I'm going to stay OD and paint his name in a nice youthful but period correct font on the front of the desk in blue outlined in orange, his favorite colors.

Sounds like you have a great plan, tying some important family memories together!

Minus that, my suggestions were to use his favorite colors (although those can change), or dress it up with bright (but non-neon, LOL) colors, with a rat rod / race car idea.

Despite some cooler, cloudier weather this morning, I spent the morning NOT fleaing or saling - just chillaxing in my slowly-developing sanctum sanctorum, to which yesterday I moved these fun finds. IMG_2196.jpeg
But the real reason I was killing time was MrsLS’s insistance on going to a Allentown’s Cocoa-Cola (Baseball) Park to watch Philadelphia Eagles (Football) and 76ers (Basketball) in a celebrity fundraiser Softball game… it IS better than last week’s walkabout at Disney Springs (though I had bbq and ipa at both).

(That was a home run btw.)

I'm going to call this post my "You didn't really think I was in charge, didja?" UPDATE on the Student Desk Restoration! :)

Mrs Lugz thought I was being overbearing on the OD. (I thought I was on pretty solid ground with it being the original color, but you know women, particularly wives, have their own logic system and I have found it best not to argue with it.) Not getting too personal, but when we have a bad row, the kind where you say things you don't mean, she still blames me for pushing Son #1 into West Point. (Never mind that HE is glad I did. HAHA.) So she is sensitive to anything that looks like I'm working on Grandson #1 now. (Never mind that he is 4! LOL) So I compromised on Antique Black (a chalkier appearance). I have to admit, I am very pleased with it. It looks terrific. Especially since I retained some of the deeper marks when I sanded. It looks authentic. I can't even imagine it being a bright color now, which would change the whole appearance. I did add his name on the front in some fancifully allusive script. And my wife's and my initials under the desktop. (I got some big time brownie points on that idea.) :pimpflash

Today was pretty good. I bought two aluminum tripods, a Matthew’s 119 and a Tiltall 4602. The Matthew’s came with a Mole-Richardson 8011 stage light. The tripod is extremely overbuilt and the light is wired for 110v. I plan on making a floor lamp out of both. I also got some repop accordion lights to go with at another sale. I also picked three drivers from the $1 bin
