Ok, folks. A recent purchase has me curious about this particular breed of ratchet. Post 'em if you got 'em!

I'll post pics of mine when I can. In the meanwhile, I'd like to see what you all have and know if you actually use them.

I don't have a pic but I have one of those cheap stubby 3/8" on one side 1/4" on the other and I use it all the time. It's hefty and has a good feel to it. I was using it last night as a matter of fact. No sort of quick release so that's a little frustrating but I like it.

I found the head of a flex-head ratchet - just the head - and converted it to a palm style ratchet. Very smooth action, 3/8 and 1/4 knuckles made it perfect for whatever sockets were handy. Then i lost it! Would love getting another one and redoing that idea.

Do you fellas tend to use them with the same size socket on both ends, allowing you to avoid having to reverse the gear, or with different sized sockets to avoid having to mess with socket changes?

sorry for the crappy pic. On vacation at the moment and had to snip it from another pic I had saved. It's a Genius stubby 3/8 - 1/4 that I've had for years. use it quite a bit and it's served me well.

I too have always wanted one of these. Wright tool makes a nice one, model #3482. Its sized 3/8 X 1/4, and with their open head design. I had H. Epstein get me a price for it, but, if I remember correctly, it was $70-80, which is a bit too expensive for my blood.

I later found this, though, http://www.waresdirect.com/products/Commercial-Products/Wright-Tool/Pear-Shaped253247?trackURL=froogle which is rather interesting... If I'm reading it correctly, its 30 of these ratchets for a little less than $400 + shipping... Perhaps we could do a group buy? Any interest?

I have two of them, both stubbies. One's the Toptul CJMM1216, the other is a Titan. The Titan is a hefty little tool (my shortest 3/8" stubby) and much smoother (72 teeth) and nicer than I expected for $9.99 (it's currently $13.99 at Northern). I do use it, but it's not exactly a confined-space tool.

So, any interest in a group buy? I've wanted this ratchet for a long time now.

TITAN tools re-introduced the Double-Head ratchet a few years back and have tons of them, long, short, stubby, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2". Good quality and a Lifetime Warranty! They are carried by anybody that does business with Integrated Supply Network (ISN). That would be just about every Tool Truck or Tool Dealer in the US. Their selection can be seen at:

I haven't seen this one posted here yet:
Bought it yesterday at HF. Haven't tried it in real use-case yet, but it seems to work fine when turning a socket on each end.

Pittsburgh 1/4" x 3/8" double-ended-ratchet
72 tooth action, 7" overall, HF part Number 67993

Side by side with my Snap-On 1/4" (Pittsburgh has better finish):

Side by side with a Craftsman 3/8" (lower profile is the HF ratchet):

The ratchet handle is very slim, and seems like it will fit well in tight places. Edges of the beam are a bit sharp, but how much force can you exert on a 7" long ratchet anyway, and you can always pull on the head at the other end, which is not so narrow and square.

I've always thought those were gimmicky and useless. I guess I'm the only one.

Same here. When I worked in the shop, some one gave me a stubby double headed ratchet exactly like the one in post #16. I think I used it like once in the past 10 years & it has sat in the tool box ever since.

I made a rule to myself that I would never ever buy HF ratchets or sockets. Well some months ago I broke that rule & got one of those 1/2" telescoping ratchets on sale.

I recently had to replace the top mounts on my front coilovers. Couldn't get the hex bolts loose with an impact so I decided to try that 1/2" HF telescoping ratchet. It has fine teeth so I was cautious expecting that it might break. I put a lot of torque on it & suprisingly it held up.

So again going against my rule I decided to get the samller 3/8 + 1/4 telescoping ratchet to match. But I hate that it had the 1/4" drive on it too so I machined it off.

Not bad for $10 ratchets but they definitely won't be my choice to use when I reach for one.

I joined this forum, when I was looking for info on a double head rachet by proto for Vogel Tool co. from the mid 1950's.
It was one of my first tools as a teenager - I bought it in a pawn shop.
I recently broke one of the lock pins (stupidly).
If anyone has a broken one, I need that part or the whole thing.
I hope somebody can help.
thanks, dave-TX

Not sure what pins you mean, but if it has nothing to do with the main part that has the 3/8 & 1/2 drives on it, just order a std 3/8" Proto ratchet repair kit.
