FINALLY did good at a thrift store today, and one I wasn’t a huge fan of at that.

The store is pretty packed, and as a result cluttered, but I figured out where tools go and where I need to look in this store.

I still haven’t figured out their discount system. Several items rang up less than marked, but I didn’t see a pattern to it on the receipt (category, sticker color, date it was priced, etc). But I won’t complain.

$25 all in

Tools:
TEKTON hacksaw frame
Cold chisel
Rockwell 1/2” impact
Cee Tee slip joints in good shape
SK USA 9/16 combo wrench
Unbranded Made in USA screwdriver
K-D MFG oil filter wrenches
Osborn Master Duster Brush

Not Tools:
Hohner Echo Harp (probably going on eBay, but a cool find)

I found one of those ones. They rock. You can kind of take them apart to give them a good clean. You'll be juice harping your way along a German stream in no time.

It has been brutally hot here the last few days, which wipes me out. So, as it is cooling off, I have two nice sales to go hit today.

Wish me luck!
Wipes me out too beemer. Its been brutal here in the mid-atlantic for the past week or so as well. Thankfully I had my company install central air to the new GS Ranch Monday & Tuesday. What a relief. Oh yeah, good luck.

I also skipped today, same reason. Not because I don't mind a little heat or humidity, but I would mind driving 40 minutes to find a sparse vendor turnout. If I was going into work I might, but not risking a dud trip. My Friday flea is much closer.

Continuing the meager haul theme, I went for a CM Block grinder, but it was already gone, so this is what I came away with for $5.
In a bag of 1/4" sockets, I saw a couple of Dayton and P&C among the offshore multitude. Not as many as I had hoped...
4 Dayton, 2 P&C, singles of Wright, Thorsen, S-K & Husky (last two 3/8")
From the rest I was able to make three sets (2 SAE & 1 Metric and two partial--1ea SAE & Metric). Because they're clean, instead of tossing them in the recycle bin, I'll bag them and send them with my neighbor, who is a sometimes FM seller.
Other items: New pair of 24" flat bungees, new Gilmour hose splitter and new pack of six brass and stainless steel brushes--to clean more sockets!

Estate sale ($21): Craftsman 6500 toolbox w/ tray; 3 - Wm Greaves and Sons chisels; 7 - Yellow Freight System mugs; 1896 Philda Disston D-8 11 tpi cross-cut saw; 30mm SK 1/2" drive socket; 4- John Deere 1/4" drive metric sockets; National Panasonic R-8 6-transistor radio; Magic level; 9 Craftsman -V- 12 point 1/2" drive SAE sockets.

It was one of those sales where I was always a step behind. Initially went to the wrong side of town, doubled back and got there just as it opened. Went to the basement 1st and as I spotted something the person ahead of me would snag it. Missed a draw knife, vise and a block grinder. Oh well, them's the breaks. Did end up with one of the nicer Disston saws I've come across. The radio is pretty cool. Supposedly the top is where you put your smokes while you're listening to AM talk radio.

Back to the same sale today. Just a few items of note.
IMG_6026.jpeg
A Cornwell driver handle, vintage, but no-name cutters, a 1/2” breaker bar (Taiwan), an American Dripless Oil can, and a homemade Lay Out Dept. clamp, that also has GE on it.

Seller threw in several meat/butcher saws for when I open a butcher shop or a torture chamber. 🤪
IMG_6022.jpeg
The small one is marked Sheffield and the bottom one is marked Moore Bros.

Also picked up a Clayton & Lambert blow torch that is in really nice shape.
IMG_6024.jpeg

IMG_6025.jpeg

Lastly, I was able to get a couple of knives. A Western 855 Hawkbill Pruner and an Imperial Barlow. The Western is in decent shape, but the Barlow needs some work. I love Western knives of this era.

Auction ($8): Cast iron Japanese tsuri-doro lantern; Sterno no. 25 speed cook w/unused Sterno can; Disston D-8 Phila 20" 11 tpi crosscut saw.

Also won an IBM Selectric II on a rolling stand, but as I was rolling it out to the car the wheels jammed and tipped over. Smash! Honestly, I was kind of relieved as it would have been a bear to get that thing to work and I only payed a $1 for it... but too bad it was a sweet machine.

Well, I had planned to hit two estate sales today, but as I was out the door I realized that the first one was farther away than I thought, and didn't have enough pictures of tools to make it a go. So, I hit the other one I was planning on, and then found two others.

The one I hit was a definite garage guy, but sadly with a taste for Harbor Freight. But I managed to find a few things: 4 Hexite wrenches, SK spinner, weird little wrench thingy, Martini filet knife, small blow torch, very old flex six point (only markings I see are -20), heavy duty Wiss scissors, Ford socket wrench, Cornwell combo, MAC combo, and Snap-on extension. I also could not resist this:

a Tyrolean walking stick, complete with metal tip, and shields of various Austrian towns.

The other two sales were busts.

Nice finds BMW! Those Wiss #20's look like the same set I got last W/E.

What does the rest of the mini blow torch look like? (it got cut off) and is it alcohol or gas?

Went to a contractor liquidation sale, kind of a bust.

Hit a thrift store on the way home, ended up doing decent.

$17 got me:

Proto 8” adjustable, Snap on Cotter pin puller (tips broke, need to warranty it), Crescent Rhino Screwdriver, Unbranded Japan made screwdriver I just liked, Can-Van Flare nut wrench, Thorsen 10mm combo wrench, Wiss M2, Hobul MFG wire strippers.
IMG_6457.jpeg

I left a bunch of USA Stanley screwdrivers, a Husky Spinner, a Dunlap combo wrench, and some Heyco BMW combo wrenches.

Estate sale company hosted a painting contractor liquidation. I wasn't planning on going, I hate painting, but life decided to wake me up at 5:30, so might as well.

The main item I wanted was the needle scaler. The rest were discovered due to, "well since I'm here.." Got me for $25 all together.

Jet needle scaler
Red Devil scraper
(2) 1/2" Campbell shackles
replacement plug end
9/16 Craftsman crowfeet
(4) unbranded church keys
3M 4 1/2" yellow bristle disc

I forgot to include the 3" Purdy black bristle brush in the photo, I'll just blame that on my distaste for painting. I was happy to find the bristle disc which looks unused.

Estate sale ($70): Brass andirons; Cram's Unrivaled Terrestrial Globe (pre-1945); Rags; Magnifying lamp; JB-80 lubricant; Aluminum wire; Rock Island 504A vise; Remington Performance .45 Colt 250 grain round; Carbundum no. 134 stone w/box; Shapleigh Diamond Edge hatchet; Kershaw A100 Multi-Tool; Letter opener; Craftsman molding head insert; Stanley no. 12 lignum vitae mallet; Magnifying glasses; 5/8" plate steel.

70.6 dew point made for a sweaty day. The lignum vitae mallet is cool. The wood grain is crazy. The Rock Island is a sweet little vise with most of its paint still intact. Not a bad day of picking, but nice to get home and appreciate the central air. Sorry to all you West Coasters having to make do with fans.

Went to my favorite industrial surplus place HGR today and picked up this good looking ESAB plasma cutter today on last chance closeout.
20240712_175252.jpg

We also stopped off at a junk store and I bought this Ames 1942 entrenching tool.

20240712_175613.jpg
I also bought the Gulf map that will someday go in my porcelain GULF station when I get it built.
Not sure what I am going to do with copper/brass struts/braces but they spoke to me and they were cheap.20240712_175542.jpg

I slipped out to two sales and nearly got skunked; - a buck at an Estate sale.

I left behind a small side table that for scale was perfect for next to my Easy chair/office, but was just not the quality build I want. (stapled or nail gunned together, may have been "hand made" by an amateur)

I happened to notice there was an estate sale just a few miles away. They started at noon and I showed up at 2:00; apparently a lot of the best stuff was gone. I made a pile, and didn't quibble for sixty bucks. The guy running the tool portion of the sale looked familiar; turns out we used to play hockey in the same league 15-20 years ago. It was fun to catch up.

The SK 1/4" deeps were missing the 9/16 and 5/8. And the Snap-on shallows were missing the 4.5mm and 11mm. I spent a bit of time looking with no luck.
There were still a dozen ratchets there, and they had clearly been picked over. So I was quite happy to find the little Snap-on!
Not sure what I'll do with a Snap-on #1 Pozidriv, but I couldn't leave it behind, could I? It can hang out with the Proto #4 Philips which also won't get used much.
The Channellock 546 are very nicely made and will go in my snowmachine travel kit.
The clear handle Craftsman cotter pin tool and #2 Robertson are pretty cool and will definitely get put to work.
There was a bucket full of tape measures so I snagged a couple. They are like new on the inside.
If anybody knows who made those Craftsman duckbill pliers I'd love to know. They seem very well made.
The Wright box was empty; not sure what I'll do with it.

Everything is made in the USA except for possibly one of the measuring tapes.

HGR’s main location is about 20 minutes from me but unfortunately they aren’t open on weekends
I have bought several things from the Euclid location and had them shipped. I also bought this sight unseen, they give you 45days to pick up. Unfortunately the Ft Worth showroom has gone to appointment only so I couldn't browse this trip. Luckily I don't work on fridays

Ok sort of a ***** to be me, but it's my own fault kind of day.
Went to 2 community sales across the river for a 3 hour round trip.
Mostly all decor & baby stuff especially the town home (modern row house) development.
All I got was this mason ? pick for 3 bucks, and a Meadville PA Channellocks pliers.

Then when I pulled in the pole building upon arriving home, I see this:

P1010020.JPG

Those 2 milk crates did a fine job for 5 years holding up the Craftsman 4 drawer chests as I kept adding a little weight.
But the camel's back finally broke.
And it's so damn hot......

Did the plastic milk cases get a bit soft in the outrageous heat? Or break?

The big Proto is in pretty good shape - but it has an owner's mark from a certain very large Alaska pipeline!

I thought I would start a little Whatzit episode with this junk I fished out of a junk-filled drawer... I'm astounded by what people save.
