Butcher block workbench top

Hey Guys,
Where can I get a new top for my workbench? I think it's 5' x 30". The old partical board top has been well abused and I think the steel base is more then serviceable. I guess it would have to be local to save shipping. Can't get them at the HD can I?

I have gotten butcher block work bench tops from GRAINGER. You may be able to pick it up at you local outlet and save on shipping. My father in law used a Grainger work top to make a kitchen counter. It was very nice.

I read an article in a woodworking magazine recently on how to make one using 2x4's as the butcher block top. I don't remember which magazine, though.
I have used the Grainger tops at work, too. They are nice.

As MAD said above, you can get them from Grainger. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get them at Fastenal.

If you're going to be working on vehicles, you don't want a buther block top. Stainless steel is the only way to go.

And it just so happens I have a stainless steel Lista top for sale cheap (read: I need this thing gone).

I looked at it at some point, but it's both too deep and too $$$ for my blood. Especially to try and ship...

My neighbor made his own from oak dunnage for pipe on train cars. Sawed it down to size with his table saw and glued and screwed it up. Made it as wide as would fit into his planer then used dogbones to tie the pieces together. Turned out really nice and was about 3.5" thick.

I made all of my benchtops from doubled industrial partical board, screwed and glued, then a piece of 1/4 double tempered masonite hardboard on top of that. I put a radiused edge oak edge on my woodwork bench, and a 1 1/2 inch. angle iron edge on the mech. bench. The hardboard is easy to replace. Holds up to abuse very well and the angle edge has just enough lip to keep small parts from rolling off.

Thanks for all of the responses. SS would be nice - but 88.5" is too long, I need 5 ft max (my garage is getting small). I will be doing allot of projects, automotive will be only a small part these days, but that may change in the future. That LISTA top looked real nice though. I'll have to take a close look at there products and check out grainger if I want to just replace the top. do they make a nice rubber mat I can put on the SS top for certain projects? When working on my airplanes I sometimes need a soft surface, I use a towel most times, but that suxs to work on.

I use rubber floor runner mats from my local Ace hardware for matting on my tool carts and roll aways. It comes in a 3ft. wide roll and they will cut to any length I need. Pretty good stuff, but may not provide quite the cushioning you are looking for.

I actually picked my butcher block top from Ikea. It's supposed to be a kitchen counter i got a 3' x 8' piece for $75.00 . If you live near one give it a shot.

That's a great Idea, I'll check it out. There is one up the road a bit.
