So, the cheap 29 x 1.95 Kendas were a problem.
Tossed the old 700c little knobbies on to see how she feels. Way nicer. I’ll be on the lookout for less dry rotted little knobbies.

^^ I've been blissfully ignorant of the bike world after leaving it... have a 15 yo bike nut son so starting to pay attention again.

When I sold Konas they were one of the darlings of the industry.. not so much now.

Seems like Salsa is on same path..

Stole a few minutes in the shed to mess with the bikes. Tried to switch up the crank set to a carbon fsa set, but it’s a different bb then I planned, so I’ll stick with the first plan for now.
Then made a brake decision. I was thinking cantilever brakes cause I like the old school look, but it’s a late 90’s, so let’s go v-brake. These are off the K2 that I switched over to xtr’s.

Late 80's hand built Fat Chance Team Comp owned since new. Only one other painted like it when it was built. I seem to recall that about a dozen colors were used.

Rare box crown fork has interesting spring to it.

Another ride. Somehow things come in and never go out. Wife will have to deal with them in the estate someday.
Ellsworth Truth with great Mavic Crossmax radial spoked wheelset. Managed to make a suspended bike weigh what a non-suspended bike would but at a price of course. Air kit in the front forks helps a lot in weight reduction.

I remember when I was a kid Salsa parts were a dream! A Lightspeed or Moots frame, XTR v-brakes, Salsa brake booster.......Kooka cranks!

Sad to see so many iconic brands go under or loose their character.
Showing my age pulling this out. Sad thing is that I wasn't a kid when it came around!

Beemer, you got a whole hidden stable? Post it up.
Getting less historically important but one of Klein's first mountainbikes in early '80's; MountainKlein.
I bought it directly from the manufacturer.
Later I found that there was a dealer a couple towns away but it was a little obscure shop, much like the shop I dealt with for Bultaco motorbikes; owner had a day job so it was nights and weekends for the shop.

The welds were incredibly smooth on an all aluminum frame. The Mission Control stem and bars (one piece), not an original issue but a later addition from Klein, was a piece of art.

The chainstays were weird; square aluminum tubes but another nice feature is that the rear brake was under the chainstays making the frame look clean above.

Notice that the control cables duck in and out of the frame. That is cool.

They are all original owner antiques and waiting for a return on the investment.
The Klein Mission Control bar/stem and the Fat Chance box crown fork are doing well in that department.

There are a couple more bikes down there but less historically significant. A Gary Fisher and a Centurion Iron Man.

Interesting to see a Klein without rear-entry dropouts. Very cool!

Switched out the stock fork to the Bomber, for a little more pizzazz. Now I need to extend the front brake line, as she’s taught.

That’s a clean ride motorcity!
Here’s my plan to pin the back as I need a second point of attachment to keep the rear from twisting, you know to get that full 2 person torque to the pavement!
I also tipped the rear end to compensate for the 26 inch front and 24 inch trike rear.

I’ve been biding my time for a trike to pop up. Saved this girl from scrap.

I saw a twin to this bike in a local thrift shop. Looked like someone I’ve seen around riding one. A couple of weeks later I saw him out on it.

It’s hard to tell from your image, but the two I’ve seen have been a medium blue.

This one is definitely a purple, Captain. The trike will wait til spring as I have no where to store a massive trike, but I’ll be gathering parts through the winter.
I did grab this GT lts-3 from the scrapyard for cheap. It’s got the funky elastomer rear suspension that I’ve only seen in photos. Couldn’t let it get crushed and the shed doesn’t have a GT.

And my first stuck seatpost. Days of Mystery Oil and a pipe wrench got it moving. Drilled a hole to insert a bolt to bang on, but it didn’t help. Then in the vise to twist it out.

There’s this “Bike Jumble” like a swap meet happening in Providence in May. I wanted to hit it last year, but couldn’t make it. I’m planning to go this year, see what’s there, and sell some bikes. So, I’ll spend a little time getting some rides ready. This is the Trek 720 700c wheeled blue fade guy. He’s getting a lube, new cockpit, and a shine. IMG-9502.jpg

I’m a sucker for the Trek color fade paint jobs of the past. Headset got a wire wheel and the boiled linseed oil treatment. Black stem, black bars, and I’ve got black bar ends. I’ll pull the cranks to clean and lube next. Then get the shifting and braking back.

Decided on this funky Fuji Tiara. Love the paint, not as much as the Trek fade, but I’m a fan. Going to lube, clean up the cockpit, and bring him to the jumble to find him a home.

The 12 year old boy has been getting into trail riding with his boys, which is awesome. Now he’s convinced me into trying to build up that crappy fat bike into a “less” crappy fat bike to mess around on. We are stuck with the Mongoose frame and the **** wheels. Nice headset in. Cheap fork I had, but way better than stock, on.
Todays progress.

Pulled the freewheel off the fat bike to deal with the super sloppy hub. Now to see what is out there for a wider gear selection freewheel. The stock was a seven speed. Can I go 8? 9? Off to the internets.
And yes, we will regrease the front too. The hydraulic brake calipers we wanted to use were rubbing the front spokes, so we had to switch to a thinner set and go cables.
This is where bins of parted out bikes comes in real handy.

The boy also got to work with mom’s hair dryer to peel the stickers. He is pushing to paint, which I’m on board with, but only after we get it together and test ride. It’s looking way nicer without the Mongoose stickers.
And no rattles now when you bounce her.

The slightly wider range 8 speed cassette arrived to replace the little 7 speed. Googling told me I may not have the clearance to run it, but one washer added on the cassette side gave it the room. All cabled up. Oh, and the seatpost. It shifts and stops, not well, but enough that the boy and a buddy could ride.

We only sold one bike at the Bike Jumble, but lots of parts, so we brought one home. This dude was super cool and actually approached us in the parking lot while we were all loading up. He gave us a killer deal. 2016 Intense Spider 275c. It’s amazing.

Nice bike! I had an earlier version of the spider back in the day. It’s too bad you can put an angled headset in their to update the geometry.
