Missed one item from this AM - a 4" diameter thermometer. German Movement and made by Conant custom brass? I could find no part of it that was magnetic. I think the main housing and supports are copper? The rivets are certainly brass.

They are still in business and these are available in both brass and copper.

Local online auction ($35): Arbortech AS 170 Brick and Mortar Saw with 3 blades.

Started buying from local online auctions. Picked up a ton of stuff, but I'm hesitant to post here as I don't want to move to far away from things actually found in a garage. Some things are strictly flipping items such as 100 - 3m Finesse-it 5-1/4" buffing pads for $30 or 25 cans of Rustoleum Lens Tint $55. I'm a bit leery about moving down this path as buying things of little interest to flip kind of moves away from the spirit of why I got into this in the first place. I'll have to give it some thought. On the other hand this brick and mortar saw is pretty neat piece of kit.

Not exactly a Garage sale find but an online auction buy. I took a shot in the dark because the description of the lot didn’t say anything about tools.

My ¢¢. As this years host, and as a person who does post auction finds, I have a bit of bias both ways.

I think if you post stuff we would normally buy at a garage or estate sale, and you didn't pay retail, it's reasonable.

Your 25 cans of paint, or a pallet of Amazon or HD returns of DeWalt power tools, not so much.

If you are buying that quantity to flip, even more not so much. Buying a one off item because you know someone will want it, post away.

Again, my ¢¢. We might ask our thread idea founder, and a few emeritus hosts weigh in.

I don't think thirties, or even early 40's. the lid was square cornered then and the handle was leather

I think that is a replacement handle on a later box.

I have been too busy to get to sales lately. My daughter was at a sale Friday, and thought I might like this. I only cost her a dollar.

Optical Boresight.jpg

TXN-12-150. There are some German words pasted on the inside of the lid, but the instructions are obviously Russian. A little research revealed that it is an optical boresighting tool for 12.7MM machine guns. Probably for aiming fixed-mount guns as in fighter planes. Use this to point the guns so they will shoot where the pilot's gunsight is aimed.

The real question is now that I have the tool, do I first look for the UBS machine gun or the YAK-9?

Stopped by the local picker’s place to see what he had put out (he sells most every day).

Lots of new clamps in various sizes. A couple of Williams, a Cincinnati Tool Co., and a nice large one that I think is marked Mark, Chicago.

The last item is one I need some help with. It’s a Hollands Mfg. Co. (Erie, PA) ratcheting wrench about 20” long that I was told was used for railroad track switches.

Too be fair; probably where the guy got his railroad tools mixed.
There is so little left of the Hollands addys.

It’s garage journal so you have to find both. But you have to restore both the gun and the yak while building a hangar 😂👍

Saukit, I think you deserve a YOU ****! on those carts, Hazet or not!

Ditto, @saukit, You ****!

Sale 1, got the card catalog for 20 bucks
Sale 2, got the Ridgid wrench, Milwaukee case, and assorted hand tools for 10.

You **** for both! Was that card catalog full, and was anything valuable in there?

Not exactly a Garage sale find but an online auction buy. I took a shot in the dark because the description of the lot didn’t say anything about tools. But looking at the pictures in the can looked like some big sockets and so I figured for $5 I can’t go wrong. Also this is my first post so I apologize if I formatted or didn’t do it right. Thanks all!

Welcome! And, You ****. BTW, were those John Deere boxes part of the deal? If so, what's in them? Deere parts can be pricey.

Yes they were, these were all of the boxes I could find but I think there were some more parts from other lots. If there anything there that you or anyone else would want please let me know, I have no use for them and would be happy to send them to someone who could use them.

Card catalog was empty, used in an old library. I filled it up fast with lock parts :)

From what I can find, the Shinto style rasp and the Kwick Kleen that I found are of a similar vintage, ca1950s, but the Kwick Kleen has the saw blades tight together (and interchangeable) while the Shinto style has blades spaced and diagonal, sort of. I haven't found a patent for the Kwick Kleen, but patent 2,549,570 seems to cover the Shinto style rasp. https://patents.google.com/patent/US2549570A/en

Wonder why I didn't find that myself. Thanks!! All of the patents I had found for similar tools had the toothed blades arranged at various angles and often were originally intended for scraping butcher blocks.

^ the patent number was printed on the box in one of your photo images. that one was too easy. I just couldn't find anything about the company, but I didn't look very far. I would assume production would have been in the mid-1960s.

Now I feel really dumb. I guess I just have had too many things on my mind, and going on in my life. (Daughter-in-law with brain cancer for the second time has required much of our time since February, another son bought another house, plus all the summer garden work we usually try to do).

Wow, you certainly do have a lot going on there. I hope your DIL recovers well.

My wife and I just decided to put a booth in a vintage store that’s opening soon, so I went to a ton of sales this weekend looking for things. I hit 4 estate/barn sales and got a few things off marketplace and couple auctions. I won’t go into great detail, but give some highlights

First is this CPL box for $20. This will be for displaying things in the booth. Needs some cleaning, paint and rust hole repaired.
IMG_6626.jpegIMG_6625.jpeg

Next, an old steel cabinet and divided shelf unit, $20 and $25. Again, will used for displaying other stuff.
IMG_6664.jpegIMG_6663.jpeg

Added a few more saws to the collection for less than $4 each.
IMG_6704.jpeg

Tool highlights:
Diamond Adjustable, 3/8 Mac Ratchet, Snap On 9/16 wrench, CEB Gas Stove pliers, Blue Grass 93-6 Diagonals, and the Eagle Oiler were all $1 or included in a crate of USA made C clamps and Shackles I got, along with a Crescent adjustable and 2 MF co squares not pictured.
IMG_6707.jpeg

Kraueter 1841-8 Linesman’s from a $2.50 auction lot. The beauty handled ones are awesome.

IMG_6703.jpeg

Huge Plews oiler that is brand new
IMG_6634.jpeg

And some old metal first aid boxes. The Amtrak on is really cool, the Bauer and Black still has stuff in it. Paid half the tags on these.

IMG_6641.jpeg

There is a ton of other less interesting stuff that was included in lots or bundles. But overall made out pretty good.

I also set up at a trunk sale and got rid of some harbor freight/no name tools that I have replaced with higher quality garage sale and thrift store finds over the last few months. Finally sold the Craftsman tool box I bought a few weeks ago as well.

Had a good haul yesterday at a local online auction. Found the Meteor ignition set, a wooden handle A Stillman's patented 1848 saw set, a brass Frey stacking screwdriver, 3 1/2" screwturn, Cochran speednut wrench marked pat'd May 2 1916 (adding to the 2 others I already had. The others are pat pending), and a wood handled scribing wheel (for leather)? with no markings. And a few other things I am guessing are machinist related.
All for $6.00

Auction ($56): Dynaco Pat-4 Preamp, ST-120 amp, ST-80 amp.

All power up, which is nice. Supposedly these are rebuildable as they were optionally sold as kits. I'm very tempted to replace the caps and work my way through the system even though I have no experience in electronics. Fortunately, I have a friend who is a union electrician so maybe give it whirl as it would be nice to have some basic understanding of working on home electronics.

Union Electrician and home electronics are pretty much apples and oranges unless he's a Home hobby guy for electronics.

Hose or electric cord binder. Mine are Cord Cuff I think, have them in sizes from power cord on the CAT compressor to giants for 50’ of air hose. Ratchets down to size, quick flip to open.

No experience with the amps but I did have the PAT4 in the early 70's. Bought the kit and a friend built it, nice unit. Hope you can find a knob for it.
