IMG_5592.jpegIMG_5551.jpegIMG_5576.jpegIMG_5574.jpegDecided to put the 356s out on the grass for some early morning photos. Later in the morning, a couple of close friends helped us to get this little foursome off to our local Cars & Coffee. Was a very nice day!
Odis, Great photos of beautiful cars in your picturesque setting! Thanks for sharing.

Happy Birthday ODIS !
What car are you buying today ?!!
Thanks for the Birthday Wish!

Have not added anything but the weekend is still young!

Part of my B-Day celebration was the oil service on this one. 9.5qts, oil filter for a BMW that cost Way Less than the “Ford” filter and now the car is good for another year…. Fun afternoon save for the 40 little bolts that secure the belly pans.

Thanks for your note!

I've never been able to wrap my mind around fancy car show trophies or where the drive to win them comes from, but that trophy is fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I want my vehicle(s) to look good- but I don't really care if anyone else likes it or thinks it looks good.

Travis, I can't speak for Odis. For two decades we belonged to a Corvette club and attended a monthly meeting at a dealership that sponsored us. We went out to a restaurant after the meeting to socialize and discuss upcoming events. Events included car shows, autocross and drag races. The trophies were just a way to show appreciation for the vehicles and participants who showed up. It was fun to get together with like minded people. I doubt a trophy is ever the main goal.

Attended this car show to support the organizer who knew the previous owners on 2 of my 356 Porsches and besides that, he is a great guy.

He made the "finials" on all of the bottles of wine trophies which I think was very creative and far more respectable than the commercially available trophies usually given. Told him on arrival that there was no need to have my car in for judging. He countered by telling me it would not be fair to the others who would want to vote on this car and that we drove hundreds of miles (in the periodic rain) to attend... No, you are gonna get the car judged.

We did in fact have a very nice time at this very small show. Hood River is along the Columbia River.

Odis,
I would expect you would come home with one of those bottles of wine no matter which of your cars you took! It would be worth the drive even without the wine, and that's probably why you went. Driving them is a good part of the fun of owning these special cars.

Yes, the drive and passing when safe......... Spooling up the supercharger is intoxicating not to mention rowing through the gears.

Thanks for your post!

Travis, I can't speak for others but back in my earlier years I actually liked going to car shows and winning those trophies. Maybe it was a symbol of acceptance or approval to some extent of what I had built. Not sure I sought the trophies as the end all/be all, but they were rewarding for the most part. My main goal at the time was to showcase my workmanship as I was trying to drum up business for my speed shop that I ran on the side. My original goal was to someday take it from a side gig to a full-time business and car shows helped to expose my work. Unfortunately, I found that not to be case as shows really didn't do anything to drum up business as much as get the bottom feeders to come out in force. It did more to turn me off of car shows after several years and now I only go to a few here and there. Our city has their annual car show this evening and although my wife and I were going to put our Camaro in the show this year, I simply don't have time to prep it. Although this was more to support our city than anything. A local coffee shop near our home has a Cars & Coffee each Sunday that I have talked with my wife about going to about a hundred times but still have yet to go. :dunno:

In my last shop I lined my shelves with trophies, plaques and awards from various shows that we attended and competed in. That being said, as I've gotten older they mean nothing to me and in all honesty and all those trophies and awards are sitting in boxes collecting dust.

Always enjoy Cars & Coffee. Started the event here with a couple of friends about 8 years ago and started out with 4 cars attending and now, average is almost 100. Stay for an hour or so then go do important stuff... Every Second Saturday of the month. Rain or Shine. January was pretty light, but I did show up along with a close friend.

The Speedster in the above photo is “almost” completed and must say, it is running well. Work to be completed is just a bit more on cosmetics, like adding the bumper decos and bumperettes.

Turned my attention to the ‘63 356 Coupe to make it safer to drive by one of my close friends to the 37th 356 Bull Session in McMinnville, Oregon, a trip that will take us 7+ hours to drive on secondary roads. These roads were made for the 356……. Simply wonderful to drive on.

IMG_5639.jpeg

Changed out all the brake components for new cylinders from ATE, new brake shoes and had them arced to fit the newly turned drums, Installed new flexible brake hoses to boot. Clean and repack front wheel bearings, new seals… you get the picture.

For me, drove the 356 Cabriolet. Ran like a dream and now can say the engine and transmission are working flawlessly. Such a pleasure to drive.

We had a wonderful time at this year’s 356 Bull Session:

The following weekend, had the Cab entered in a Porsche Concours. Needed to clean the car from top to bottom and front to rear.

Removed the tires/wheels so that the wheel wells, backing plates, suspension could be cleaned:

Completing the undercarriage, polished the paint, cleaned and treated the leather interior, hit all of the rubber components with some dressing and called it good.

Waiting for judging to commence:

IMG_5647.jpeg

A little “show & tell” prior to the judges going over the car:

This one just prior to results announcement:

Scoring started at 140 points with the Cab receiving 139.2. First place for the air cooled division. Nice!

Congratulations for your Cabriolet show result!
Thank you! Always good to see you here!
Odis, excellent work! All looking delightful! Congratulations.
Thanks again, Bug! The judges were hard pressed to find deduct points. For a car that actually gets driven and where the restoration is well over 10 years old, very happy with the results.

Thanks for taking the time to post guys!

Odis,
Your efforts sure paid off. I know you are proud of the results, and it must be rewarding when others appreciate your hard work and your expertise in carrying it out to such a high level.

Thank you, Mike! Always a labor of love on these cars and you are right, it is rewarding when others appreciate the effort it takes to present these cars at Concours levels.
Heck with the cars, I want to see more of the driftwood elk, lol
Yeah, was impressed with that sculpture as well. Anna H. made that and she is also a great artist. Further, the concours was held at her home.

The annual “Ladies Day Drive” where there were at the start, 7 cars in the group. At the lunch stop, one car had problems with the battery. Only 5 cars made it to the final stop for refreshments and the conclusion of the drive.

The black Miata is a car that received my detailing services earlier in the year. A lot of hours invested in this one.

Mt. Baker in the background and the car my wife chose to drive that day.

IMG_5675.jpeg

Missing cars are a Porsche C-4S and a Boxster.

Anyone can go to the store and buy ice. Wanted something a bit different and made “Ice Globes” from balloons and stuffing flowers in them, filling with water and put into the deep freeze for a couple of days. Truth be told, they were the hit of the day. Had a lot of fun getting everything ready for my friends and of course, my wife.

Great idea for the ladies to have their day. Great location. Love the ice globes!
Mike in WI
Thanks, Mike. Perfect day for their drive. They lingered for a couple of hours here after the drive. Happy you like the ice globes.
@ODIS Thanks for sharing and stealing the ice globes idea! Thanks
Thanks, Bug! By all means, use the ice globes at your next function. Your guests will remember your event for a long time.
Odis, when we lived on the Olympic Peninsula people used to ask us what we did in the summer.

I always replied with " If it fell on a Sunday we would have a picnic".
All so true! Prior to this event, we had days of fog, then the wind came along for several days with sustained 20mph winds, but by the time that Thursday rolled around, it was calm and temps in the mid seventies. Perfect weather and oh so lucky!

I'm really missing the PNW summer now.
So far this summer, smoke from fires has been low compared to other summers. Today, a little more sun and maybe hit 70.
It's a comfortable 70 w/ 57% humidity here in Everett, WA right now. Deluxe.
Perfect description: Deluxe!

Working on the 355 interior plastic bits. These parts, over time, develop a nasty black goo on them that instantly transfer to hand or clothing.

This is the HVAC control from the center console:

IMG_5681.jpeg

There are companies that specialize in removing the goo and while they do a great job, the work is expensive and longer lead times. Decided to use one of my favorite chemicals; Lacquer Thinner and give these parts a cleaning session. The little blue dots on the control knob are from the gloves used to protect my hands. The little dots were scraped off later on.

IMG_5682.jpeg

Happy with the results and completed most all of the parts in the interior:

IMG_5683.jpeg

IMG_5685.jpeg

Turned out so nice decided to join up with some folks on a Ford V Ferrari drive to the Peninsula. My good friend Shawn drove the FGT and the 355 was my ride for the day. Had about an equal number of F-Cars and GTs.
IMG_5690.jpeg

IMG_5688.jpeg

Good to have the 355 back on the road and in September, major service is scheduled which requires that the engine and transaxle to be removed from the car…… Overdue on this service.

Getting close to finishing all the items on the Speedster.

Finished adding the trim and Bumperettes for the bumpers.

On the surface, sounds like an insignificant task, however, fitting the trim to the bumpers was time consuming there is only one chance to drill the holes so that the fit is correct.

Used the bumpers off of my white Speedster to measure the spacing of the attachment holes so that the alignment would be correct and rather than measuring each location, marked the tape with a red felt tipped pen. After marking up the bumper for the locations, found the center line, held my breath, center punched and drilled the holes…

IMG_5696.jpeg
IMG_5697.jpeg

The aluminum strips aka decos, have to be fitted (bent) to the bumper and for this task, used the knee mill to get the curve needed for a good fit:

IMG_5832.jpeg

Both the bumper and the deco needed to be drilled to fit the Bumperettes and this was much the same process for the deco to be fitted. Polished the Bumperettes (cast aluminum) to bring out some luster but did not sand out all of the damage they received over the years. Don’t want them to be too pretty. Used a fine abrasive then a couple of polishing compounds to get to the desired luster.

IMG_5849.jpeg

IMG_5835.jpeg

Looks good and it’s nice to have the OE looking bumpers on the car:

IMG_5843.jpeg

IMG_5847.jpeg

‘Next step is to get the original gas tank cleaned and treated and will start that process in the next couple of weeks.

Have a pleasant holiday weekend!

Hi Odis,
Greetings from Italy.
I read your entire thread and I can only compliment you on the location, the magnificent house and the fantastic car collection.
I hope one day I too will be able to complete my dream garage and dedicate myself to carpentry work, as you have expertly done.
