Would this be within code?

I need to run 10/3 romex from one j box to another. I only have 10/2. Is it within code to run 2 of the 10/2 from box to box, and use a white or black from the second romex as the red (taped of course)? The unused wires would be wire nutted.

The Code says that all the conductors of the circuit has to be in the same cable

It was just a reference to the cost. HD doesn't list their per ft. prices on their website. Lowes list 15' for $66.74
I figured, and in comparison ordering 20' makes sense.

Just reminding to look in store for $/ft prices.

6 vs 20' is a big difference

Home Depot website screenshot.
Minimum order is 6 feet. What a coincidence!
Somethings wrong with that picture.
It appears to be a single red, (it should be orange) larger, stranded wire.
The description doesn't match. HD strikes again!
(I'm out of here. If you don't have the budget for the materials, then you shouldn't do the job in the first place)

  1. Its a basic picture
  2. There's technically no code requirement for jacket color.
  3. Zoom in, sure looks like some form of NM-B on a spool to me. You can see the form of the wires under the jacket

HD only stocks Southwire wire, and their color is Orange for #10
On #6, #4, and #2 stranded wire by Southwire, you can see the form of the wires too.

I'd bet that it's a 10+ year old picture of 10/3 from before they finally made it user friendly and flattened it out instead of being that round bunch of twisted up wires that was hard to get the jacket off of. It sure looks like a red jacket, but although I've never seen it, it could be an old stock photo from a different manufacturer or just a piss poor photo. And most importantly, it's Home Depot and their website *****. In fact, I only go HD if all of my other options are exhausted because, at least locally, the stores **** too.

I've only seen round, and have definitely used some within the past 10yrs...

What am I missing out on?

It's flat, which makes it a helluva lot easier to staple, and stripping the jacket is as easy as scoring both sides of it and pulling it off.

Huh, never seen that around here.

Seems like round would need a smaller hole...

I have two sizes of auger bit: 7/8 and 1" and there is never an issue with fitment. While I don't think I've ever tried, I have 5/8 spade bits and would be willing to bet 10/3 would fit. Also, it's been at least 10 years, maybe more since I have even seen the old style round 10/3, It came out as flat at around the same time 14/3 and 12/3 made the switch from round to flat.
