My flea finds from this morning [Lugz 2024_43]

2024_43.jpg

Top to bottom:

- A whole box of vintage wheel knockers, mixed brands. Some really funky designs on the type.
- A giant fid, with a ship's name (S.S.S. Seraphis) on it. The fid is genuine. Not sure about the marking.
- Champion DeArment battery pliers
- A robust no-name seam ripper
- A PLVMB combo wrench
- No-name farm implement wrench
- Lectrolite tappets
- Some kind of re-threader/die stock handle

A nearly identical Time/Speed Proportional Dividers to the one that I used on all of my B-52 missions. I couldn't pass it up.

That's really cool that you would see one again.

Proportional dividers; fairly common for drafting when transferring dimensions from one scale to another -OR probably used them for going from one map scale to another? I have at least one set.

People in the woodworking world use them to scale a piece larger or smaller. I've seen people sketch with them, but never actually build with them. Not sure about lathe work

Re Found mine a few months back, they had migrated to the bottom back of a drawer that I didn't take out very often, months after I needed them.

Reader's Digest tutorial on time/speed proportional dividers:

Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) produces Aeronautical Navigation Charts in various scales:
GNC-Global Navigation Chart; JNC-Jet Navigation Chart; ONC-Operational Navigation Chart; etc.
Latitude lines on earth are 60 nautical miles apart--constant from equator to poles.
Longitude lines are 60NM apart ONLY at the equator and converge on the poles.
The Longitudinal lines are printed with hash marks indicating the NM between Latitudes.

Need to figure an ETA to your next action point?
Set your Speed (Ground Speed) via the slide on your time/speed dividers;
Measure the distance from your present position to the action point;
Flip the dividers over and use the sharp points on the other end to measure how many hash marks are spanned by those points;
The resulting number is the Time in minutes to the next point.

It works in reverse if you ever need to know where along your track you will be in a given number of minutes.

Edit: Here are a couple of 1000 word pictures:

These are set to 450kts. The scale on the bottom is miles/minute.

A robust no-name seam ripper (y)

cool find.
I take that back. It's actually a can opener! PEERLESS brand, patented in 1890! :) As cool as that is, and as valuable in WorthPoint points, I could've used it to be a seam ripper! Lol. I've been immersed in a project that necessitates the taking apart of old clothing and bags and such.

It’s gonna take me awhile to go through today’s haul. The first stop was an estate sale of a gentleman that was a machinist at the Cummins Engine plant in town. Three out buildings chock full of tools. The pictures showed several Kennedy boxes that I figured would be gone (this was the second day of the sale - 30% off). Well, they were all there. Picked up this 8-drawer chest for $140. It’s absolutely full with lots of goodness including several Starrett and Mitutoyo measuring tools.
IMG_6488.jpeg
IMG_6489.jpeg

I love ‘tools with stories’ and this box is full of them. In digging through it, I found the owners creativity in this wrench with the manufacturer’s name replaced by the owners initials. Also a homemade stubby driver that was made from the remnants of an old screwdriver handle and a 1/4” bit.
IMG_6490.jpeg

I’ll be heading back tomorrow for 50% off day as there were a couple of matching base cabinets that will complete the stack.

Next stop was my elderly neighbor’s house. Her father and uncles were all machinists. Picked up a selection of stuff for $20. Barcalo wrench stack, Craftsman set (complete), Proto and Crescent screwdrivers, Spintite nut drivers, etc. A little higher $ than some of the deals I normally find, but this is a ‘long play.’
IMG_6487.jpeg

More importantly, she asked me to help price some tools as she continues to go through a garage full of tools. In a quick walk around, there are boxes and boxes of Jamestown tools (Crescent, Danielson, etc.). She also told me she wants me to have her uncle’s chest. It was mostly covered, but from what I saw, it sure looks like a classic Gerstner. This will be a multi-week/year process as the garage is full.

To top it off, when I get home, I found a bucket of US-made screwdrivers and chisels on the front steps. They were left by my picker neighbor who’s ‘perpetual sale’ got shut down last week.

One of my best days this year!!

You probably already know, but just in case you don't, that Sylvania box is called a "tube caddy". Mobile electronics repair guys carried those full of vacuum tubes and other common tv/radio parts
Thanks. I’ve seen quite a few tube kits and collections in my travels. I think the store pieced out the tools and contents before this box ever hit the shelf.

I realize now that I forgot to post a picture of it when open. No dividers inside, just two large top compartments, plus bottom, all nice and clean. Cheap storage, but I liked the name on it.

Tools here have been feast or famine, famine for awhile. These older PC games (3.5 dos, etc) have been popping up a lot the last few months. I have gotten decent money for most of them. Picked through 3 boxes marked "old computer games" for these. Fallout and Full Throttle surprised me.

Four sales today, two planned, two TOO. The first sale was a retiring contractor, who knew what he had, kind of. He had some nice Lie Nelson planes and similar chisels, but knew what they were and had ebay print outs to bargain with. Too rich for my blood. But I did find some nice things:
53943428171_0b760101c9_b.jpg
A good reamer, Craftsman Vanadium punches (a bit worse for wear) and Ford brake wrench, and some Klein needle nose. $7

Next stop was a TOO, mostly as I didn't see any pics of tools in the ads, but it was right on my way. But I had to make a left on a highway, which I told my self that if it happens to be no issue I would stop, and if there was easy parking I would stay. Both worked out, and I found the following:
53942549977_454eff6c8f_b.jpg
Heller body dolly, Enco magnetic base, Craftsman partial set, Plierwrench jaw and pouch. $8

Next was a TOO with nothing of interest, and after that was a farm sale. And, I got too say, farm sales always bum me out. Whatever they are selling is usually destroyed by rust, and this sale was no exception. There were a bunch of ratchets there I would have been interested in, if they weren't rusted solid. Plus they always want full value, which is laughable. But I found a few things that I would spend my hardearned on:
53943429191_a810f7605e_b.jpg
Three Stanley chisels, which are salvagable, and a P&C ell handle. $5

Tools here have been feast or famine,

Been that way here for several years. I think Covid sort of marked the end of the heyday? A good tool day here is a red letter day.

But I'm also getting more selective, so when I find a good pick site, I leave a lot as well.

It is kinda odd, I don't collect either P&C or Craftsman, but I have been finding and grabbing a ton of good examples of both. Good thing I have a friend who collects both.

Enco magnetic base,.
You're a magnet (nyuk nyujk nyuk) for those Miti-Mites! You found an empty box, re-branded for Lufkin, back in 2022, linked here. You may recall that I found a very early model, complete, in a wooden box, back in March this year, linked here. I did a deep dive on mine in the Lugzsonian, linked here.

High winds, cold temperatures and the threat of rain conspired to make for some slim pickings today. We found one sale and it was one where I had previously gone through the tools. I found a few things anyway.IMG_6095.jpeg
Earlier Williams DOE than I usually pick upIMG_6096.jpeg
No name I could find on the wood chisel. Needs a little sharpening IMG_6106.jpeg

Glass cutterIMG_6101.jpeg
Little -v- DBE wrenchIMG_6104.jpeg

No name I could find on the wood chisel.
That handle sure looks like Buck brothers at a glance:

Slightly disappointing day today; Not terrible, but Not what I usually do for this event - This weekend is the big 2 day super sized Block sale with a Sunday closure of the main street for antique stores for an Antiques Flea market, this has been happening for more than 50 years. The local adjacent streets al have yard sales and as its mostly houses from the teens, 20's and some 30's, normally a lot of cool old stuff.

A lot less of that this year, and what there was was overpriced. I saw maybe 5-6 lanterns and 2 Coleman stoves, the oldest lanterns was a 3-56 200A in a plastic suicide case with some spare parts and a few silk-lites. The fuel cap had been replaced with a one piece. $80 was more than I cared to spend...

Took a long time to even spend a buck, I picked up a large medicine capsule from a free box first, then the pump, my only GPA item for a buck. It needs a new wood guide -1/3 is split off and gone, -so If I can find one, great, but if not I'll make one on the lathe.. $2 for the badly painted deer - I doubt the painter had ever seen a whitetail....

Niles-Big-pill-capsul-Pump-Deer.jpg

Then Ispent $15 on this small side table. I've been looking for one 24 tall, 24 long. and a foot wide -this one is a fraction over 24 long and 13 wide, and about 23 tall, -Close enough - It's for on the left side of my Easy chair to replace the Wood TV try I've been using. It's not ideal, and I wish it had a drawer or two, but it will do for now.

Niles-Side-table.jpg

And this $3 for this Gerber MultiPlier It does nat seem to fold down like most Leatherman type tools but a good name adn not broken blades or bits:

Niles-Gerber-Multi-Plier.jpg

Not pictured (still in the van) but at a Yard sale not for from the main areas, I got a 3X4 Ikea Expedit shelf. I've been looking for one for next to my roll top desk as a sort of semi room divider and saw it in the pics - I got lucky it was still there fairly late in the AM.

And lastly at a YS near my house was this $5 nick-knack shelf, a good size and the corners are finger-jointed, so its strong. This my get added in the hall camp displays, not sure yet.

I thought these were for the white gas lanterns at first but I’m starting to think not. I’m sure @Outlawmws will know

These are for the mini "Backpacker" models - 222 (not a perfect fit, but will work) 226, 229 and 3022.

Pretty small but not really to current backpacker standards - they are white gas, and the original 222's sipped fuel. After that model, they opened the orifice a half thous and increased the fuel consumption -done to make it "dual fuel" - a compromise...

next to a 400A single burner stove for size reference:

@Outlawmws : Those Gerbers don't have folding pliers. The pliers retract into the handles. Push both the little buttons on the handles and pull them back.

One of the better MT designs, IMO, but I don't find much use for MTs.

Clarified a bit. I keep a pair in the truck at all times @Outlawmws
Thank you gents - I did hit Google and with I think 3 tried got the same answer. Apparently issued tot he troops at least as far back as Afghanistan, and apparently; well liked. With some effort I got them to "deploy at the flick of a wrist" but its kinda iffy, these need cleaned up to operate well that way after I'm guessing years of kicking in a tool bag. they show very little wear and other than being pretty big, I like em.

The Table also needed cleaning - and MAN, it has I'm guessing at least 50 years of Nicotine deposits...

I started with Murhpy's oil soap, and it just keeps coming:

Nicotine-Rags.jpg

I googled for cleaning nicotine film off wood furniture, and got suggestions from Naphtha, to Ivory soap, and yes, Murphy's...

I tried CF/Naphtha, hardly touched it. I tried Dawn Ultra Platinum Spary that SWMBO swears by, and barely touched it... Back to Murphy's and Paper towels are lack with it again... It's no longer sticky, but Its NOT "clean" yet. I need to find what will cut it, or just bite the bullet and strip and refinish... Certainly the top is already stripped for the most part other than Nicotine. I'm considering TSP?

Nicotine-Table.jpg

In any case it's not sticky to the touch anymore, so Its going into use until I have time for it..

***** to @bmwrd0 for the Craftsman box with logo still intact, @Outlawmws for the Gerber flik loks, they are really nice for fishing cause you can open them 1 handed!, and @Squez for the Plomb 1/4" box!

Weekend started off slow but picked up considerably today. Couple sales after work yesterday didn't yield much but did much better this morning.

From yesterday, this sale had some nice stuff but it was a little too rich for my taste. Picked up the Plomb 3050 and a couple SK extensions for sets at $5

IMG_6370.jpg

Also a few bits from a picked over estate sale for $4. Lectrolite Tru Fit DBE, Proto, Craftsman, New Britain, Husky, and Snap on randoms.

IMG_6371.jpg

Now on to the better stuff from today. This sale looked to be a bust until I asked about tools and they let me into the garage as they hadn't pulled anything out yet. Complete Craftsman metric combo set in blow molded case and a mostly complete set of GearWrench metric ratcheting wrenches. I don't usually buy non USA stuff but at $20 for both I couldn't leave the GearWrenches behind. I did leave an SAE set...

IMG_6368.jpg

And finally the best sale of the day, guy was clearing out his shop and there was a lot of it. I loaded up everything in a tote which is always good if they don't pick through it cause you can't tell how much is in there :ROFLMAO: $40 all in for this batch.

IMG_6372.jpg

Bunch of Craftsman metric combos
IMG_6373.jpg

Complete set of Craftsman double line V DBEs and a few randoms. Snap on, Mac, Proto, Fleet, Plomb, Herbrand.
IMG_6374.jpg

1/2" and 3/8" drive sockets, kind of a mish mash but most of a 1/2" =v= set, a bunch of metric 3/8" stuff, a few =v= wobblers, and a couple other bits.

IMG_6375.jpg

And the best part, a little =v= 1/4" set with a random Snap on 1/4" ratchet in the box and a few other sockets plus the two spinners.

Here’s a follow-up to the Kennedy chest I picked up yesterday …

First, the bad news. I went back 30 minutes before opening to find them stacking the remaining Kennedy boxes that were the target of my return. Apparently, he accepted a bid on the lot and they were gone … dammit! But, that’s the way it goes. I’ll find them again …

The good news, the box contents did not disappoint. I decided that I am going to use it to house my growing collection of Western NY tools so I completely emptied it.

A good selection of hand tools … Crescent, Proto, Williams, etc.
IMG_6533.jpeg

More taps and dies than I can ever imagine anyone would need. I stopped counting at 100 …
IMG_6534.jpeg

Center drills and cutting tools …
IMG_6535.jpeg

Measuring tools aplenty … Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, Mitutoyo, Alina …
IMG_6536.jpeg
IMG_6537.jpeg
IMG_6538.jpeg
IMG_6539.jpeg

Two complete sets of ‘Micro Drills’ …
IMG_6540.jpeg

But, my favorite part was the secret stash of coffee money. I could just imagine the owner in his coveralls reaching into the drawer and grabbing some coins to head to the coffee machine.
IMG_6491.jpeg

A good score in a box I’ve been after for some time. My next target is to try to find a ‘well loved’ Matco box made at the factory that’s just yards away from my back deck!

I've had lots of luck with a TSP solution (the pink sruff) mixed in a spray bottle, then wiped. Don't know if it will flush out the open grains though.

A quick visit to my local car boot sale yielded these.

DSCF0025R.jpg

Wooden handle made in England Stanley No.304. Tip shows no signs of use.
Fine, very sharp, double ended no name pick.
A very nice large (17 fingers) Moore & Wright Sheffield metric feeler gauge set.
Made in England Footprint center punch. just needs a light touch up on both ends.
Elliot Lucas side cutters in great condition.
Wooden handle made in USA Stanley Hurwood No. 6.
Wood rotary burr. still nice and sharp.
Made in Germany Steelex stubby in great condition.
King **** 7/16" AF SOE.
Made in Germany Elora 4BA combo.
Blue Point 1 1/2" 1/4" drive extension.
Four King **** BA spanners. Were still in Cosmolene.
Three odd E Torx sockets. E4, E11 & E18.
No name 3/8" drive 10mm bit holder.
Lastly, a very small (2" long) 11x9BA DOE. UK Govt. surplus dated 1952 and marked "MAAAN" & "C5035". I've never seen that before. Is MAAAN the maker?

I spent an hour and £5 all in including 50P entry. Very pleased.

This is most of the haul from an estate sale I hit yesterday. The owner was apparently a merchant marine, and there was a lot of nautical stuff.

The little Fuller vise is stamped “Japan” on the bottom, but I love the quality of my everyday-use Japanese-made Craftsman vise (70s or so, I think).
IMG_0551.jpeg
The pipe vise is missing a handle, so I’ll have to figure out a replacement, but that shouldn’t be too hard.
IMG_0555.jpeg
The Craftsman vise I wasn’t sure about, but I took a shot on it at $35. As far as I can tell, there is no way to remove the jaws, which will limit its utility for me. Jaws are only 3-1/2 inches, too. It’s still in nice shape though, and I think it will function and look nice when cleaned up.
IMG_0590.jpegIMG_0593.jpeg
The real prize for me is the Kennedy box. I know the leather handle probably makes it pre-1950 (or so). All of the drawers slide nicely and have their brown felt, though the felt is fraying/pulling, and probably should be replaced. The paint isn’t too bad. I need to clean off the rest of the hardened yellowed tape that was out all around it, but it’s coming off pretty easily so far. The coolest bit to me is the front cover with the Republic Aviation decal. Nothing comes up when I google that design or the phrase “is this yours?” with the company name. I’m just happy I looked around the workshop carefully, because the cover was actually about 10 feet away from the rest of the box, wedged next to a cabinet, and I don’t think I would have bought the box without the cover.
