It looks like it was designed to accept a male blade type terminal. There is something similar in the 20 v Black and Decker batteries for my lawn stuff.

It looks like a variation of a Packard connector, often found on firewall or bulkhead automotive connections. I'm familiar with a type 58 and 59 which were a staple on 70s and 80's GM cars and trucks but not 100% sure what that may be.
