I've not yet tested this but I'm going to soon. similar results to E-rust and WAY cheaper. It's doing the same thing - chelating the rust - and the ingredients are easy.

CAUTION -the guy in the vid mixes this up in a wide flat tub - for a reason - A guy on another forum did it in a bucket and it fountained out during the mixing! initially you need Personal Protective Gear - after its mixed it's not particularly hazardous.

The formula on a 1 liter basis:
1 liter water
100 grams Citric acid
40 grams of sodium carbonate - washing soda
OR 63 grams Baking soda
OR 30 grams of caustic soda

Add some dish soap as a surfactant - Dawn

OK I said I was going to test this Home brew DE-rusto, and I've started:

Supplies:

A fairly flat tub so it does not become a "Foam Cannon", 2 Liters of water (double batch 1L isn't much...), 200 Grams of Citric Acid powder, 130-140 grams of baking soda, and Dawn for the surfactant:

I'm doing this outside so any mess is an easy hose down, adn any fumes are blown away (only CO2 is supposed to come out, but if you get a citric acid solution's fizzing, there will be aerosol particls, so...)

Derusto - Home brew 1 setup.jpg

Water in the tub:

Derusto - Home brew 2 water.jpg

Citric acid added -pretty quiet:

Derusto - Home brew 3 Citric added.jpg

Ready? -Note the PG and I was also wearing a face shield and mask:

Derusto - Home brew 4 ready.jpg

GO! lots of fizzing and foam, stayed well inside the tub.

Derusto - Home brew 5 fizz.jpg

After some time it settled down and some gentle stirring, I "tested" with a pinch of Baking soda, very slight fiz, so I gave it a PH test, down at ~ 4 PH so it should be good to go.

Then I added the Dawn and stirred it gently again:

Derusto - Home brew 6 Soap.jpg

The suds is from the Dawn.

Ready for some test subjects:

Derusto - Home brew 7 Ready for test.jpg

Now its a waiting game - I usually do this in my USC, but this tub won't fit and the long pieces are too tall:

New starter from DB Electrical on the repower Kohler. I think on the original Onans you had to lift the engine to swap the starter. I just had to pull the side panel on this.
1000017368.jpg

New 26R battery from Walmart. Had an OE battery in it from 2018. I pulled the positive post completely out of the battery today... I guess it was time.

Also put on new clamps. The old ones were bent/overtightened.

Waiting to get a service before winter. Oil, filters, grease. Selling it next spring. Keeping the cab and blower for my 430.

Nothing. Rode the ZX11 all day... no fuel leak

Got home, looked under the F350.. there was about 2ftx1ft puddle of coolant this morning... now it's a 3in dia damp spot..

FFS.
You make it hard to decide whether to cheer or cry. Glad you had a nice ride. I need to buy tires for the Burg and get it inspected. I'm hoping there'll be a few nice fall days.

Pulled the car down to the shop (since it's the only place that's on a pad, not gravel) to clean the Escape, and I was able to get the interior vacuumed with the Shop-Vac.

Spent the rest of my time swearing at the junker hose reel that holds the only hose that can reach down from the frost-free at the garage.

Hose reel is ready for the dump. The frame is pretty badly rusted, and all four tires are dry rotted. The four tires at Harbor Freight equal about half what I'd pay for a new reel (but I am going to fill the cracks with Slime) Had a heck of a time replacing worn O-rings (nothing I had in the box seemed to be the right size) in the swivel (which also meant taking out a rusty external retaining ring). I'll try another size and see if that fits. I had two sizes close to what were on there originally--one fit too tight and ripped when I put the swivel back on, one leaked. Had to replace two hose washers in it as well.

Tested the blower motor out of the air handler in the attic of the house as it stopped blowing. Although, the air handler is in “conditioned space” it was too stuffy & hot up there. The blower is held in with 2 screws, so it was just easier to pull it out. And since it needs 240v, I’d rather work on it in the garage shop.

Sure enough, the motor would not turn with power applied. As I was doing that, the Bezos truck arrived with a new capacitor and a capacitor tester. Old cap tested “bad” , new cap was spot-on. Put everything back together and as good fortune had it that the cause of the failure was the $9 part and not the $260 part.

Still too hot in the garage, but at least I could have the door open for air!

Bunch of smalls, some were "planning and buying":

Parking sensor extensions - $$$ - So ordered the needed shielded wire and bought some small heat shrink from the local computer store.

Sorted out the 2000 lb small winch I bought some months back, removing the "remote control box" (no remote) and adding clips to connect. I'll just reverse then as/if needed. added a hook and chain so I can connect ti to the van until i get a hitch and front grill guard with receivers on the van.

Verified the pressure washer gut is non operable; they riveted the damn thing together, so no fixing this gun - Hopefully mine will fit when it comes back from my son next week.

Sorted out nickle rod storage for the plating setup. Cleaned the arc welding flux off the nickle welding rods. Made a plastic test spacer to keep the two rods from crossing and shorting in use. Seems to work fine. Made some copper tabs to clip leads on for the tiny USB power supply. If the weather agrees I'll make a batch of Nickle Acetate tomorrow.

Checked on the De-Rusting a couple of hours ago. I need to check again but most was gone then.

I think I solved the missing coolant puddle mystery....

The swamp cooler on the side of the house purges about 5gal of water 3 or 4 times a day. I put a 5 gal bucket under the drain line & throw the water on the lawn instead of just letting it flow down the driveway into the street.
I was out all day so the bucket overflowed probably 15 gal & the path it follows would have washed away the coolant.

OK, Test results were good! Home brew "De-Rusto" works!

The solution is clean and ready for more work -First use of E-rust and its filthy:

Derusto - Home brew 9 - 6 hours later.jpg

and the results about 6 hours later: - I removed them, lightly brushed them off under the tap with a brass brush, the broken Plvmb only got a light "buffing" under a fine 4" wire wheel. After the pic I sprayed the inside of the chuck with WD-40 to remove water and ran it full cycle a couple times. very smooth!

Derusto - Home brew 10 after.jpg

and before for an easy compare: - They aren't perfect. but as the buffing of the Plvmb showed not a lot more needed!

Finished a gruelling run at work this week and went straight to my shop project Friday afternoon to work the entire weekend finishing up the "bar" area of my garage. After 20+ hours this weekend everything is in place, need a few trim pieces painted and installed to be 100%. Will put the final coat of paint on everything once the rest of the room is finished hopefully by late fall. Need to finish out a stud wall and then get back to the second half of the tin ceiling restoration. 7FE5A564-B7D7-47CC-BB10-7C52C95D940B_1_105_c.jpeg

Turned on the air compressor, grabbed a 25' extension hose and my digital tire inflator and topped up 4 tires.
Then, put it all away - and... remembered to turn off the air compressor.
Did you remember to do it, being awakened from a sound sleep, from the bedroom, in the middle of the night, 80 feet away, and down a flight of stairs, like I do?

I may have asked you this already, but how many Pumas do you think are in the United States?

‘Puma’ is the Latin American term for what we call ‘cougars’ (no, not those cougars), which are more commonly called mountain lions here in the states. So there can be quite a lot of ‘pumas’ in the US.

“The puma – or cougar as it is more commonly known in the US – has clung on in the USA despite extermination attempts that eliminated it from about two-thirds of its range in the country during the 20th century, including most of the east. But in the 1970s, management strategies became friendlier, and populations began to expand.

Optimistic estimates suggest there may now be as many as 30,000 individuals in the USA.”

Replaced a couple defective potentiometers on a "vintage" (1990s is vintage now, crazy, I know), Crossfire car amplifier.

20240916_150123.jpg

The previous owner broke one of the original pots off somehow, and the other one was super scratchy. I figured why bother cleaning it if I already need to order one. I'll just order two and replace them both.

He also lost the original knobs, so I just put on some brushed knobs I had in the parts bin:

20240916_152551.jpg

Then I gave my bench power supply a workout testing it out, lol.

I may have said it before, but that's honestly the best part of my day. When I finish a repair on a decent piece of audio gear, and I get to put it though it's paces.

The exterior of the amp is pretty chipped up, so it probably isn't worth too much on the 2nd hand market. But Crossfire made a decent amp back when this was made, so it was totally worth fixing. I may just keep it and install it in my work van. I've been wanting to upgrade the stereo in there to something that I can actually hear over the road noise. I got the amplifier for free, and I only have about $4 and 25 minutes in the repair, so I don't feel too bad being greedy and keeping it for myself, lol.

I switched out the original LX cruise control steering wheel out of my 86 mustang for a GT wheel.
Hey if you still have that cruise control wheel and are looking to let go of it I may suddenly have a need for it. I may be picking up a new to me 1986 GT this evening and It has the GT wheel. :D

The NOS turn signal bezel showed up IMG_4814.jpeg

There wasn’t really anything wrong with the old one. IMG_4815.jpegIMG_4816.jpeg

But seeing how I replaced a lot of the other trim, this was duller than the other NOS pieces, and the black paint was gone. I don’t know if my grampa removed it intentionally, or if a lot of it wore off from being washed many many times over the years. But the new one looks decent installed IMG_4817.jpegIMG_4819.jpeg

And most of all, it matches the passenger side now IMG_4818.jpeg

The car is hardly a show piece, but still gets looks when I drive her around town. I can’t really stop anywhere without someone talking to me about it. So every little detail helps.

Besides that, I worked on clearing off the table in front of the Lincoln. Lately I’ve been lazy (3 weeks sick with a flu) and just leaving parts from the Lincoln there. Among other random stuffIMG_4821.jpeg

Mainly because I needed to find this SOB lmao. Not so much the screw, but the thread chaser IMG_4823.jpeg

But I found it, so all is well.

Replaced a worn out steel nozzle on the blast cabinet with a carbide nozzle, then blasted and painted a few engine parts,

20240916_122241.jpg

20240916_160538.jpg

Then got in a wrestling match with a mower tire. I got the old one off and the new one on easy enough. But when I tried to seat the bead it was having none of that. Tried a ratchet strap and the bucket method, but no go. I looked around the shop for some starting fluid, but only had nonflammable brake cleaner, electrical cleaner, mapp gas and bug spray. Tried all of those, but still no go. I'll get some starting fluid and carb cleaner tomorrow and hit it again.

Tire - 6; Me - 0.

I saw a couger/mountain lion in Stanley VA in 2012 up near Skyline drive, Tanners Ridge area. No doubt about it.

Started hearing a small exhaust leak Friday back around the muffler on the '01 Silverado. Talked to a neighbor who has a two post lift and welder. Sure, bring it over Monday night and we would patch it up he said. Patching wasn't gonna help. She broke completely Sunday night. Luckily, there's a 2 bay family owned muffler shop nearby that's been around for 30+ years. No appointments, line starts about 8am for their opening at 8:30am. Couple benches out front, with a few old timers that are always willing to chat. Good time. Cut out old muffler and made three new "*******". Tailpipes and I pipe have a few years left on them. I was second in line at 8:30. 45 minutes in an out. $150+$20 tip. CASH ONLY;)
Sure the neighbor and I could have done it after running around getting everything and a couple hours. But that cuts into our beer drinkin' time. He wouldn't have charged me anything, but nice to support local, family owned shops.

I wish had known. I sold some parts over the weekend. I wasn't even planning on selling the wheel. But the guy asked about it and made an offer. I would have sent it your way no charge. Share some pics if you get the new 86.

The GT version for '85-86 were hard to come by for a long time until someone started to repop them. I have a spare in the attic, just in case.
Yeah I once had an aftermarket LX cover on a parts car I bought years ago. Never seen one before. I know some guys that have put the GT covers on LX's since they could find a decent used one.
