I’m building a Barndominium and I’m looking for a post to beam connection that won’t break the bank. I’m running (3)2x12 beams across the 6x6s for the trusses to sit. The saddle mount connectors are nice but very expensive then I found these at Menards. Is this the most inexpensive effective way to mount the beams to the posts?

Thanks,

Adam

The header beam is sitting on top of the post? Is the header joined at the post?

I believe the plates you found would work. I wondered if plywood gussets or just 2x6s overlapping post and beam would be enough, albeit difficult in other ways.

Most inexpensive would probably notching posts for outside 2x12s but then your posts would have to be a foot longer. Also very strong. Easier with laminated posts.

Unless you're using rough sawn, the header is thinner than the post. Packing it out to align faces?

Thanks for the fast reply and good information. Yes I’ll have the headers sitting on top of the posts.

Thats kind of what I figured. Any other methods would probably be too labor intensive. Those plates aren’t too costly.

The header being smaller than the post something I overlooked.. Yes I’ll be packing it out to compensate
