Plastic rivet tool

Lots of panels, fender liners, and other plastic junk is now held on by 1 time use plastic rivets.

What are you guys using for installing these? My regular rivet tool from astro doesn't seem to work well with the plastic ones, works fine for everything else. I saw 19400 from SG Toolaid in a tool catalog, any other good choices to consider?

Following. I typically always replace these with a "proper" reusable push type or Christmas tree clip. In instances where they don't fit or look nice, I have used a conventional rivet gun but doesn't work the best.

That's my issue. A normal rivet gun doesn't grab them very well.

So I bought the SG toolaid unit being i was familiar with the brand and it was readily available on Amazon.

It did one rivet. It won't accept the shank of the rivet half the time because it's too soft to push open the jaws, and it won't release the shank after riveting and then I spent 10min picking it out of the tool to try again.


I'm not sure if my cheapo Amazon plastic rivets are the issue, or it's a tool issue. It feels the same as my astro rivet tool for regualr rivets in that it really doesn't want to accept the shank of the rivet into the jaws. I just held the base with 45* needle nose and set them by hand with another pair of pliers.

Where are you guys buying your rivets? I have a return window so if it buy another brand/type of plastic rivets I'd be more confident to return it if the tool still wouldn't set them.

I use the Marson one linked in the third thread. It is the best one for plastic rivets IMO. One issue I've encountered is the quality of the plastic rivets varies. Some are junk and too soft. Spend the money for quality rivets because the cheap ones usually are garbage. Same as everything else I guess.

The cheapo ones I bought do appear very soft. Perhaps I will buy some other higher quality brands and retest.

This!^. At the automotive proving ground I worked at we had a number of different types from various makers in the tool crib. A few of them were expensive and sold by Napa. None worked well for very long. Maybe they were abused by some of the hacks I worked with, I don’t know.

i finally bought the pictured Marson for myself and never looked back.
