My neighbour needed to borrow my 35 year old car trailer (ultra low, tilt deck between walking beam wheels) but we broke the automatic brake hand winch loading my farm tractor a while ago - so we dragged it into the outer shop for some remedial work. Big welder reaches a few feet out of the main shop into outer shop, so used the manual OHC to lift it up on side so I could stick the tongue into the inner shop so reach damaged mounting stub for tongue jack. Cut mangled one off with portable band saw (amazed at how much I use it and no idea how I got by the decades before I had one). Took reel off of hand winch (it broke the bolts holding it at center turning point) so tried to remove broken stubs (no go) so drilled all of the way (4") through. Sadly the bit wandered 1/8 off by far side, so drum and its drive gear have pronounced wobble. Sad part is that fabulous winch (30 years of ridiculous abuse) is no longer available (US made, so probably displaced by Chinese junk) so not sure what I will replace it with.

As the NWA President, with a board meeting tomorrow, during which I must perform some unpleasant tasks, that would have been a welcome diversion. But I bulled on instead, and finished my administrative work. I usually don't have to adult too often anymore, but in the case of the NWA, too often I am called upon to provide that oh so necessary backhand slap. And, it must be done properly.

Started to finally install a stereo in the son’s megacab. As is always the case, it was supposed to be a quick easy install. Installed the little amp, and……it doesn’t work. Faulty amp right out of the box! 🤬

Still have to do all the sound deadening but have to figure out this amp issue.
We were going to buy the speaker adapters but they are flimsy junk so just as easy to make our own.

Made up some wiring harnesses.

Cleaned up my parts bins, they were looking a little hap-hazard and messy. Swept off the bench. Some unknown stuff fell behind it, and it pissed me off, because there's no easy way to get back there. Oh well, if I discover something is missing, I guess I'll know what fell back there. If I don't end up missing anything, I guess I'll find whatever it was when I move some day, lol.

Yesterday - changed the oil in my CX30, took a look at the lift kit parts to be sure all were still in place, adjusted tire pressures, gave it a quick vacuum, and cleaned the windshield & back window.
Drained the float bowls on the FJ, put some fresh fuel in the tank, and got it bumped off. Took it for a little 10 minute ride and my right knee just can't handle that bend anymore. Not sure if stretching will help but will give it a try. Last time I rode it was last summer and it was almost tolerable then, not so much now.

Installed some smoke detectors. These are able to send an alert to my mobile phone by using their app. Thought that was pretty cool being if you're not out there to hear them you won't know until it's too late. I like the fact you can name the location of each sensor. I even put one in the attic. I feel a little better now being I was always concerned about a battery fire from tools, electric bikes etc. IMG_7374.jpeg

One of the greatest joys of retirement is that I don't do administrative work, board meetings, or necessary properly done backhand slaps. Good on you for doing the dirty work.

Consulted on a friend's project. Worked in lightburn. Started burning a few hundred sheep cutouts for St Wallaby's children's Xmas project. One every two-ish minutes. Cleaned a herd of dehumidifier filters for Judy. Forgot to open the door and filled the shop with burner smoke. The big fan sucked the little fan backwards.

Like @Wrench97 said, kind of odd to pay so much

Akebano pads are what, $55?

Rotors can range from $60 to $120 each so let's call it $200 for a pair

That's less than $300 for new pads and rotors

I put on EBC greens front and rear on the GX470 a few weeks ago along with new rotors front and rear - Tacoma guys are lucky to only have discs up front

Mine are Toyota TRD discontinued StopTech and unobtainable.

I'm contemplating converting to Lexus brakes. XAT racing sells an adapter, and the rest is all OEM and readily available. Would cost about the same as a pair of rotors, but cheaper down the road.

Dug out the HF electric chainsaw and remembered I lost one of the alignment pins on the bar when I replaced the chain a few years ago. So, rather than order a new part, I made a stepped pin by cutting, filing and sanding a 1/4" bolt.

Then used the chainsaw to cut some of the roots on a tree stump in the back yard. I had to dig out around them and chop them up into 2 ft. sections to toss in the utility trailer. I had to stop and resharpen the chain a couple of times. Worked on that till it got too hot, then moved back to the inside of the garage.

I have been wanting a forming dolly to shape sheet metal patches and started by cutting a short piece of 3/8" plate and welding it to a section of scrap 3" round bar. Still have to finish cleaning off the mill scale and sanding it smooth, but it is a good start.

It's a Toyota. Don't buy into the hype of TRD anything.

As for Lexus brakes, many people just buy remans from Napa and swap them onto their trucks.

GX460'a and 5th Gen 4Runners (specific years) are the two vehicles to reference.

Edit: Just realized you have a 5 lug.

It's what it came with. I bought it used 5 years ago with about 7k on it, now it has 65k.

Yes its 5 lug.

@welder4956 Living in the woods and mowing over roots, I find the sawzall works for cutting them and the chainsaw stays sharper. YMMV

Drove the bursar CRV a day or two back. Mentioned that the a/c wasn't cold and that the car stunk. She said she didn't notice. Pulled into the shop thought I'd start at replacing the cabin air filter. When I finally got it to the point of removal it was a little stuck. So I took my time and found this mess. I had previously had to replace the under hood windshield washer hose as the critters found it delicious. Should have known. Dropped the fan motor, vacuumed and cleaned. New filter coming from the blue smile!

I was also using a reciprocating saw with a 10" pruning blade, but some of the roots were too large. I dug out around the large ones so there was a gap under them to keep the saw chain out of the dirt.

Carbide saw chains have gotten pretty affordable. I got one from Amazon for cutting a row of fresh Leyland Cypress stumps to ground level. Had a fair bit of dirt contact and inadvertently cut about 1/4 inch into a rock. Still pretty sharp. I wouldn't hesitate to cut roots with it after mostly getting the dirt away from them.

I needed a tool I didn’t have to take something apart on my combine so I did what anyone would do and fabercobbled something together after a brief engineering session.
IMG_2193.jpeg

I had a bearing out that needed force applied to it behind the shield. I couldn’t find anything in my puller drawer that would work as is and this worked very well !!
IMG_2192.jpeg

If you have a welder and a grinder anything is a potential tool. Now I need to somehow label it so older Mike knows what it is and doesn’t toss it when I get into a fit of “er’ma’gawsh I have too much **** around here” and things start getting relocated off the property.

That would be my wife, she can't smell or taste to save her life. Drives me up the wall.
