A few sales this morning. The first had been picked over pretty heavily and the knives I was after were gone, but I managed to collect a small pile for a little over $20 total.

Pliers - Crescent, Kleen Kutter, Stanley, Forged USA
IMG_6771.jpeg

Vintage hedge trimmers with a perfect-type handle and a brace.
IMG_6772.jpeg

Scissors - Jason USA, ?? Sheffield and German drafting tools.
IMG_6774.jpeg

A Truck-Lite Jamestown cleaning kit in original case.
IMG_6775.jpeg
IMG_6776.jpeg

A New Britain lock box and 3-in-1 oil.
IMG_6777.jpeg
IMG_6778.jpeg

And finally, a bunch of drivers - Klein, Vaco, Xcelite, etc. and a few miscellaneous screwdrivers. And, of course, a Genesee beer bottle opener.

Well, I've learned from you guys that I should always be on the lookout for Lista and Vidmar cabinets. And last year I had a close call - one was listed for months at $500, a bit too rich for me, but one day I saw the ad pop up again with a new price of $100. I jumped but was too late. Dang it.

So a week ago a 'tool cabinet' showed up in my local listings. Fuzzy picture. 8 drawers. Fifty bucks.

Vidmar.jpg

An hour later it had been skillfully forklifted into the back of my truck. And the friendly guys at this heavy-equipment shop showed me two more cabinets that would be available once they were done reorganizing. I said I'd take them and left my phone number.

Over the next few days I cleaned up this big Vidmar cabinet, set it on casters, and moved all my power tools into it. It was moderately dirty but once I wire-brushed the drawer slides and lubed them, everything operated smoothly. About 8-10 hours of cleaning, scrubbing, and lubing, but I reckon it was worth it.

I kept thinking about the other two cabinets, but I wasn't really holding my breath. You know how these things go; you really can't get your hopes up. But suddenly this afternoon I got a text: the other two are available, you're first in line, boss wants forty bucks each. And an hour later the two cabinets were forklifted into my truck with exquisite care.

So here's the three of them at home. I've got a lot of cleaning and reorganizing ahead of me. And I'm grateful for my pallet jack and the Lug-all hoist with synthetic line; otherwise I couldn't have unloaded these by myself.

That's a cool find! Also a testament to a True Picker, 'cuz the decal is under the lid. (I inspected three similar tins yesterday, but they were companies that made matches, and other household goods.) Big enough for the discriminating NB collector to keep orphan wrenches and socket drive pieces and sundry smalls, lid up. :)

Pexto gets a BIG **** for the 3 cabinets....

@Outlawmws I suspect that seasoning is about the only way to keep your toasters from rusting again. Think I'd do it like stove-top seasoning a skillet, but I've never tried a toaster. My few memories of using those things as a kid revolve around burnt toast. These days, I'd rather throw some tortillas in a skillet than fool with toasting bread, YMMV.

In broad terms, 3-prong are earlier than 4-prong. Take a look at some early Landers, Frary and Clark (aka LF&C) catalogs - I think you may find @ctuai 's handle design in there.
They did have dark cocoa, rosewood or ebony handles, but the "ferrule" (if that's what it's called..., I know NOTHING about old cutlery) on @ctuai 's is different. The only reason I know that is that fin de siecle LF&C artist's pallet knife I found a couple years ago. Constructed just like their cutlery. FWIW, I still have the link to an 1869 LF&C catalog on IA saved here.
Dredging this back up as I'm not seeing any spoons in the catalog, just butter knives and forks?

I'm wondering if spoons were sold separately from these wood handled knives and forks? :headscrat

I guess they took the term "Cutlery" to heart. The catalog does include spoons, though - tea, table, and basting, on page 200. One page, relegated to the back. No wooden scales. They didn't think much of soup, applesauce, and the like! :)

@Pexto *****!
There’s a Stanley Vidmar cabinet mfg site located near the Mack Trucks museum and Queen City Airport in Allentown.
A few years ago, while still recovering from surgery, I happened upon a garage sale with a desk made with two newish SV cabinets and laminated hardwood top. Seller wanted couple hundred $, willing to negotiate. My lack of available floor space and 10# lifting restriction combined caused me to pass up a good deal. Yours is better!

Pexto ***** on the cabinets, liked the story of waiting out to get the last two.

25 miles this morning & all that followed me home was a
Plomb 1725 7/16 x 1/2 obstruction and a nice,
Stanley No. 3 folding boxwood rule w/ caliper. It still has the 3 pins.
4 dollars spent.

Today’s finds from two different estate sales, both run by local companies. They usually have higher end houses but they know me and the prices are always fair.

First one was all the pipe/fittings and two Proto items. The guy gave me a deal since I helped remove a bench vise that another customer bought :)
Tape measure and tack puller from the second.
Total $10 bucks!

Slowish day... minimal tools, 3 planned stops lots of TOO's:

Started with a TOO for the perforated SS can fora buck, this will be the inside liner of one of those table top fire cans. 1st planned stop and the notebook -going camping with me. - a fan for my youngest's collection, and something for SWMBO's snowman collection. $2 all

Y1-SS-bin-Y2-notebook-fan-Snowman.jpg

Second planned stop was a dud, so on to the third - $10 for A Williams 6" adjustable, 3 brass pieces, the big one is some sort of vent and has a schrader on top? - a Tank valve, won't fit my low boy toilets, but I may be able to shorten it? and a swing away can opener, barely used:

Y2-Tank-valve-Brass-Swing-away-Williams-6.jpg

TOO's: A Bessy bar clamp and 3/8's Freud boring bit for $3 - I'll be using this on today's project.; Student driver magnetic signs for a buck, - youngest is doing the Permit thing; and $3 for the Camillus knife. I got it for the marlin spike thing to throw in camping, as last trip I was fighting knots on wet ropes... I didn't even note the broken blade tip - think i'll just reshape the tip edge a bit since its just a rope knife;

I agree Lugz, that's a special New Britain find. Very nice SC Fly Guy!
Thanks!! I actually walked by the box a few times before picking it up. It immediately went in the stack when I opened it up. It’s only got the lock and no real latch. It was marked $3, which made it a cool $1.50 on 50% off day. I like the idea of keeping it open and using it to store New Britain tools.

^ fabulous. do those have any sort of name or makers mark on them?

Those are definitely Awesome! Suckage just for uniqueness!
No makers mark or other identification, but I was drawn to the handles and the overall quality. The blades are removable and are actually crazy sharp. They were $4 and there was no way I was leaving them behind!!

Love the Jamestown drivers!
The 4-in-1 screwdrivers were actually made (or at least assembled) at a small factory in Gerry, NY, just outside Jamestown. I pick them up whenever I find them.

I wasn't planning on going to any Estate sales this weekend, but there was one a couple of minutes from my house. The knife collectors here on GJ would have salivated over his collection. Sorry, I didn't think to get any pictures, but I did pick up a car book. Only $5, and lots of pictures and details, weighs at least 10 pounds.
20240928_172434.jpg
A second sale that I had promised myself that I WOULD NOT GO TO, because this guy would qualify as a Grand Poobah on GJ, he had Snap-On Tools, Snap On tool chests, vintage Sun equipment, with spare parts for them, robotic parts, classic vises, and many other things that I've seen guys on GJ drool over.

I only ended up going because my SO wanted to look at some sofas at a store that was near this estate sale.
It was 50% off, so FORTUNATELY I was able to limit myself to this AC Delco trash can...which was immaculate, and a set of Wiha drivers, with a couple of screwdrivers. Grand total $50.

Even my SO, who is not a tool gal was impressed with how organized and clean this gentleman's shop was.

This was the "Sun room", from the Estate sale I previously mentioned that I attended today. One of the ladies running the sale mentioned that the guy was previously a rep or something for Sun. He might have been an engineer or something as there were lots of spare Sun parts, and lots of robotics stuff.

You have to assume that all of this stuff was still operational, as from the looks of his workspace, he was a very fastidious person.

I don't recall any of the shops I worked at in the 70s had the full blown Sun consoles, but some of the places my dad worked did, and as I recall, he loved working with them.

I hit five stops today, and here is what I brought home:
54027663592_de50e52514_b.jpg
The first stop was a little outside my normal baliwick, but looking at the ad I wanted it to be my first stop. Not quite as great as I imagined it to be, but still quite nice. A vintage ignition roll with many extra wrenches, two headed snake, multi curved wrench, small oiler, Indestro brace, industrial supply catalog from '37, Proto flextension, hand vise, and Williams spinner. $10

The second sale was chock full of vintage Walker Turner tools, but the ones I was interested had already sold (thank goodness, I need another project like I need another hole in my head) and outside of that, there wasn't too much I was interested in, but I spied the Yankee push drill box filled with mortising chisels, which I don't want or need, certainly not at $12. So, I went to talk to the lady running the sale, and it took me a lot of haggling to get her to agree to sell me just the box, as she could not understand why I would want that. But she finally relented, and I got it for a buck.

The next two sales were busts, so I figured I would head out to the final sale, way up in the hills in the opposite direction. Well things were priced a little higher than I liked, but I found some interesting things:
54028787093_7dca62403b_b.jpg
Simpson 260/6 (still untested, as I haven't dug up the batteries I need. No corrosion though.) with ABN clips and the tambor case. A barely used Craftsman 1/4"SAE set, paper pad in a nice metal case, Herbrand DBE, and a beehive driver. $35 for all that, but the Craftsman set will pay for my entire morning.

And on a related note, next weekend I will be in Knoxville, TN. Can anyone recommend a good swap meet?

You know that gm trash can is giving some gm guy the sweats right now just looking at it. It’s actually pretty cool! And I can believe you didn’t want to go to that sale. Looks amazing just off the picture of the “sun” room!

Here is my remote purchase from a Friday ES that MLW purchased via chat message w pix. 32 bin Akro Mills organizer, only one drawer replaced, and one drawer broken on the side. Kept 3 rows of drawers “cruff”, discarded the contents of the other 5. Lots of finishing nails, some rusty, misc screws, anchors, furniture quick assembly bits, corrugated fasteners. The keeps were washers, cup hooks, picture hangers, big staples, etc. mostly wanted the organizer w good drawers.

(Originally posted in error in the vintage tool box thread, for those who think they are seeing double)
