I lost my ******** mind is what I did...

I had the Griots G8 3in buffer out to take care of a couple of minor scratches near the drivers door lock on the F350... And having taken care of that is when I took leave of my marbles...

I rolled under the truck with the buffer.... and buffed the oil pan...

And the bottom of the oil filter...

In my defense, I'm home alone & unsupervised all week :)

If you want to really stiffen it up, add some bracing between the front vertical posts and the over cab bars per below. You could also add some truss like bracing between the over cab bars, but best improvement would be on the vertical posts.

The bottom 2 red lines you added are exactly what I was trying to say.

And were you drunk?

Looks good though. You'll have to start walking around with a mirror on a stick so you can show it off to people when they're admiring your truck.

I, OTOH, did something nearly as foolish. I taped off and sanded the bottom of the kayak I just finished building two weeks ago :/

I wasn't happy with how the finish I used was handling abrasions, so I'm adding another layer of epoxy to fill some scratches and then I'm replacing the 2k clear with Spar varnish on just the hull of the boat. I did the epoxy this morning. Next Wednesday I'll do the varnish. Need to give the epoxy time to fully cure.

My shop is for wood working so I rarely use my metal vise and didn't want it permanently mounted and taking up bench space, so I bolted it to a scrap of LVL with a board screwed to the bottom that I can clamp in my wood vise. For now it will sit on the floor out of the way except for when I need it. Probably won't take a lot of abuse but is plenty sturdy for anything I would use it for.

I've also seen people mount 2" receiver hitches to the bottom of their workbench and mounting the vise to a 2" square tubing to slide into it.

My only concern with the way you did it is damaging the screws on the woodworking vise if you get to really banging on something.

yeah, I've thought about the receiver hitch too, and may do that in the future. but like I said, mostly just occasional light use, it's been in a box for the last 2 years, so that's about how much I use it

Started the 'finishing' of the bandsaw box, generally tidied up, drank beer and watched some YT.
Melted some beeswax then added the equivalent amount of my BLO / Turps mix and made some paste wax, being impatient I lifted the glass jar out of the water bath and let it cool on the TS, it cooled too fast and cracked the glass jar. I should have let it cool in the water bath. Will redo it today

It is, at least for us old timers.
Interesting, i had not heard that before, we call it the hat
Just wait till you get to the insides. Pig, Pumpkin, Hogshead, Third Member, Chunk, among others. Two countries separated by a single language.
Not sure if you are yanking my chain or not, what are the 2 countries you talk of ?

I use 2" square tube inside of 2 1/2" seamless square tube, weld on some brackets to bolt to the bench and a plate to bolt the vise to.
It's a lot cheaper then buying hitches.

Unloaded five more 12 ft sheets of corrugated roofing to use on the walls. It was less expensive to buy 12 ft lengths and cut into four pieces than to buy precut 3 ft lengths.

I also ran 14 gage speaker wire and mounted two new speakers that were delivered today. These replace some small Bose shelf units that were starting to sound bad.

I did something similar. I usually use my workmate to hold it.

I did something similar, but instead of clamping it in my WW vice, I used a flat piece so I could squeeze it between the vice and bench dogs. Now that I am doing mostly metal work, I just bolted one to my welding table.

Now that's a good I idea. I don't currently have any dog holes in that work bench, but I can certainly put a couple quick enough. Thanks for the idea.

Had a visitor...

IMG_20241002_153226678.jpg

That may be the "small, very fast thing" I saw in the garage Monday evening... It was so damn fast all I saw was a blur disappearing under a toolbox.

I see those every day at home; if they get into my garage I'll catch them and let them out because otherwise they'll die in my garage

They really keep the bug population down so I'm always careful about not stepping on them or anything

Opened the garage door.
Felt the blast furnace.
Closed the garage door.

No ****, felt that today

Felt horrible for the guys that cleared out my gutters and put up pigeon guards in the eaves of our house

They were out there at 2pm starting on it where I was totally fine with starting as early as 6-7am

Behind the garage. Cooler temperatures, dry, low humidity, and nice weather sunny days, so back to getting ready to paint the garage. Did some gardening with my sawzall, removed a bunch of trees to make a path behind my neighbor’s side of the garage and along his fence.

This was completely overgrown, now it’s less overgrown.

I have done a similar thing but with 1" tube, the bench was made from this.I had not bothered using these anymore as I didn't like the way the vice always had some sort of movement and it's now bolted to the bench, but thanks to this thread I may just reuse one of the mounting plates for a grinder / buffer that can be removed as needed

you can see the receiving hole under the vise ( which is just a cross brace from the bench build)

This is the base that slides into the open tubes

This is the plate fitted into one of the tubes

It disappeared under the door to the right when I stepped outside. It hung out there for a while, I left the door open & it was gone when I checked later.
