Does Sears exchange ratchets with owner markings?

I bought a couple of Craftsman ratchets from a user on here that have undisclosed owner markings that spell out his last name. Its not very big and may not be noticeable to some.

Has anyone ever had experience with exchanging engraved tools at sears? Is it something that should be told to the tool salesman or try to sneak by?

Thanks guy

A flex head, black plastic handle craftsman and a tear drop style long handle craftsman. Both are chrome. I would link the pics, but sears seems to be down right now.

In my experience it depends on the person you are talking to at the store. The younger people often seem like they could care less and probably won't look the tool over very much before the exhange. The more experienced ones seem to be a lot more knowledgable and attentive to those kinds of details. Though I still don't think they're going to care if there are initials etc on the old tool.

The biggest exhange problem I've had at Sears is when the tool is part of a set. They have always given me a hard time about breaking open a new package to replace on item from the set. A few times I've gotten around it by saying, that's fine, I'll buy this set right now, exchange out the broken tool and then return it right here right now. Usually then they'll just take care of it.

I remember one time watching QVC with the gf they had some Craftsman stuff on and they're talking it all up etc. Someone called in with a warranty question, saying he tried to exchange a broken tool at a Sears but they told him that because he used it in a professional setting (ie to make money) that the warranty didn't apply. Doat. That was embarrassing for the hosts. They told him to go back and talk to the manager because the warranty does apply and the person he was talking to probably wasn't aware of it.

I don't know about the marked ratchet question, but I was disappointed when I turned in a solid 1980s Craftsman ratchet and the woman behind the counter pulled out a rebuilt newer model. It made me not want to ever take the chance of getting a "made in Taiwan" ratchet.

Make them rebuild your ratchet there, rather than take the rebuild if you're not happy about it.

I've exchanged a ratchet engraved w/ my name a few weeks ago. No problem.
In regards to posts about smart assed clerks denying warranty exchanges, run it up to the next level and have the clerk get the store manager. From what I've read here, there seems to be a better record of cooperation with that level of escalation.

Refuse it I have done it

I would have for sure but my partner went to sears to exchange that ratchet (the one we had was a long handle flex head but not hard handle). So he walks through the door with this broken POS ratchet and is all happy thinking he got an upgrade LOL

The good news is I just exchanged that ratchet recently for a NEW hard handle flex head.

:headscratLet me get this straight. The ratchets are not broke, but you want Sears to replace them??:headscrat

:headscratWhat's it matter to you?:headscrat

I have no need to exchange them now, but when they break or I get tired of looking at the name on them, I want to know if they can be exchanged.

Nothing a matter with me.
You just stated " Thanks guys.
Thats what I wanted to know.
It is kind of the only reason I want them swapped. Im slightly OCD lol"

That statement led me to belive that you wanted Sears to replace them and the engraving was the only reason you were having them do it.

Furthermore, when you say "or I get tired of looking at the name on them, I want to know if they can be exchanged." it's abuse of the warranty system that is not cool with me.

Yes, if I went to exchange them now, the engravings would be the only problem to my knowledge. I haven't used them yet, so I don't know if they have any other problems. You throw out the statement "having them do it" like its present tense and Im in the middle of the exchange process. No, it was only a question for reference. As stated in this thread by various other members, they have exchanged tools with names engraved on them, though maybe the ratchets were broken, too.

I also see how you conveniently left out the first part of your second quoted post of mine that said "when they break". Yes, they will break, all of my craftsman ratchets break. Most with minor use.

Thank you for your opinion.

I agree. This is why some brands are hard to warranty.

They warranty clearly states that if the tool fails to provided 100% satisfaction, then its warrantied. Next time I open my box, I may be unsatisfied. Who knows.....It may be years.

I've read where members exchanged tools that they didn't like the look of anymore because of chrome wear and tear.

Thats a little different than having an engraving on it though. Maybe I should take my $200+ Snap-on ratchets in for replacement because it has an engraving on it. I don't think that would fly...

Dude, face it, the only reason you want the ratchets replaced are because they are engraved and it bugs you. You've already said that. It's that simple.

I have nothing to face. I know that i've already stated that the engraving bothers me. Big deal. They are still in my box as of today. My question is answered.

Good day....

What you do with your tools is none of my business.

Mooman should learn this.

I tried exchanging a pair of underwear that had owner's marks on it, I ended up getting kicked out of the store.

Thanks, i just spit my coffee out. :) ...now were those craftsman or CRAPSMAN branded underwear?

As far as the OP question goes. i dont think sears will care, theyve never even really looked past the CRAFTSMAN mark of the tools ive brought in to warrentee. even if they did see the PO's name its not like they require a DL for exchange

If you really want to not have to worry about it, throw em in a bucket of water overnight. Yes this is asinine, but at least they will take them.

People won't like you on here if you do it either, just an FYI. I straightened out a bent wrench once and took it in, boy did I get **** for it.

I agree. If there was an issue with the ratchet and it was engraved, I would expect Sears would not have an issue with it being engraved.
But, that was not the spirt of the OP's question. He wanted to see if they would swap it out because it's engraved and it bugs him to look at it.

Or you could just remove the pawl or spring. Its not like they'll open them to check why they stopped working properly.

Not that i'm condoning a switch based off owners markings. It would bug me too but then thats why i never purchase used tools with markings in the first place.

It's not that important to me to completely ruin a tool.
