Patrickm82: Here are a couple pages from Athol's 1911 catalog. Page 15 shows small clamp-ons like yours. Amplifying Shiftless' point, page 3 shows a variety of Athol vises on a display stand and the top 2 shelves are small vises.

I’ve been grabbing the small clamp on’s when I see them. They are a hell of a lot easier to move around than the big boys I have!
Yeah me too, have a lot of variety in them, much easier to get delivered and as I don't drive I'm pretty much limited to the 4" or less size.
The 4-6" I have, is a mixture of a seller willing to post in 2 pieces or waiting for a few tool sellers to drop off when the come by - limited space as well and the bigger ones sure do take up a lot of room.

LOL, I've bought a heap of masonry bolts over the weekend, I'm going to be adding to my lounge room wall art to free up some space.

Mitre vices are also a pain space wise, they be going on the wall along with a few 2 1/2, 3" bench vices.

I'm very fortunate that 'she who puts up with my my idiosyncratics" has her own house.

Heaps of room on the walls to expand my vice obsession.:)

Gary: I'd bet that your vise was from Milwaukee Tool & Equipment but the Quick Clamp down is a puzzle. Here are some pages from their 1972 catalog and one from 1956 which specifically mentions that their "Giant" vises were painted red.

CLAMP ON: To add to the recent discussion of clamp on vises, I included a page from the 1972 catalog that shows their version.

Since we are on the subject of little clamp ons, I’ll take this opportunity to post these pics of my latest rehab. Friend and fellow GJ member CRSINMICH gave me this little guy when I was visiting him earlier this month. He started the process by removing the old paint and rust. I hauled it more than halfway across the country and then sanded out most of the pits and squared up the jaws before applying primer and 3 coats of textured paint. Like many clamp ons all of us run across from time to time, this one was missing the attachment screw. Until I find the appropriate donor C-clamp, I’m using a 5/16 coarse bolt and matching wing nut glued onto one end.

Yep, like that, and thankyou ,just woke up and you and @Shiftless have solved a Problem for me.

Haven't touched my Dawn 5 1/4 HD vice as wasn't sure how to bring it back- - love the grey/silver, kinda a duh moment , always have and did 3/4 million KM in a dark metallic silver Charger 770, got the ID plate with paint code on my shelf-- I'm happy just thinking about it.

thankyou, what a wonderful morning. :)

Yes indeed
Making new jaws for a Parker has to be the most difficult and time consuming jobs in

the vise world. Kevin, you once again did a masterful job.
Thanks Shift, Ricieh and Colmal for the kind words.

I still have several more Parker jaws to make and each one gets easier. I am up to 5 hours to make a set. The Bonney Rapid Transit vise I have has the same style Parker jaws and can’t wait to start on that one.

KMS: Inquiring minds want to know which model of Bonney Rapid Transit vise you have. They'd also like to know if you plan to make the four different jaws that were offered. The swivel jaw would be good but you have to make the felloe jaws. You just never know when you'll be making wooden wheel rims.

You can just make out the Parker-style jaw faces in the drawing in the 1891 journal item.

CRS. I have the 160 model. 5-1/4 jaws. I’ll study those other jaws. Just did a quick check and it doesn’t look like my vise will accept the spare jaws. I’ll save your posting. Awesome work CRS.

LITTLESTOWN #3 CLAMP ON
Littlestown Hardware and Foundry Co.

Here's my contribution to clamp on vises. It's only a coincidence that I took possession of this on the same day that Shiftless left here with the clamp on he got from me which he refurbed and posted last Wednesday (#92462). The catalog cut shows Littlestown's three clamp on models appropriately named No.1, No.2, and No.3.

I bought this No.3 in order to hold up my end of the clamp on conversation and because it is a LITTLESTOWN. If there's any long time American vise manufacturer who gets less respect than COLUMBIAN it's LITTLESTOWN.

I found a Parker No. 4 today...

20240928_165250.jpg

20240928_165228.jpg

I don't think the handle is original... and I know the screw retaining plate isn't original... I'll see if I can machine replacements for both.

Is there anyone out there that might know how long the handle should be?

Otherwise, it is pretty tight with very little play in the slide or screw.

-Bear

I spent some time working on the Parker today... I machined a new screw retaining plate out of some 1018...

20241024_164041.jpg

20241024_164048.jpg

I still need to finish the top edge... I ran out of time today. I also need to figure out how to 'age' the new plate... it's not perfect, but it fits and works pretty well.

That catalog page is from 1950 and describes it as having the blue paint. All the others that are later describe it as being deep green. Here is one from 1954 and 1953 with the list of vise's that come with it for the display. Notice 1954 has one for automotive and one for industrial. Pretty neat.
