Looking for a quality portable forced air heater. Not interested in the cordless options. It'll live in the back of the truck through winter and the cheaper units just aren't tough enough.

How big of a truck are you going to live in?

Even the smallest units are 30,000 BTU and most don’t have any kind of thermostat control.

What are you heating? Is this just for the service van, or for taking out to jobsites?

For the van, look into van heaters. Plenty out there, from ~$550-over $1,200. For jobsite, the go-to around here is a central heating furnace.

Heater the type of heater I have in mind
I have a similar one to that.

Good to warm a larger area continuously, but in smaller spaces, you have to turn it on and off all the time, kind of a pain

To my knowledge they can’t be configured to use a plug in thermostat since there is no way shut off the gas flow other than manually

All non-vented propane heater give off a LOT of H20 ! Enough that you can have water running down the walls.

Lots of heat is fine. The wind will take it away quickly. I'm looking for something tough.

I’ve used mine working on a tractor outside under a tarp.

Way better than nothing

With a small gas bottle, easy to move around

Both Webasto and Eberspacher (ESPAR) make gasoline and diesel fired cab heaters with thermostats, timers, etc. Why ****** around with MickeyMouse **** when there is a correct thing to SAFELY do the job properly>? Oh...you can get Chinese knockoffs (Vevor, etc.)

I use this in my marginally insulated shop I just put a loop from the switch with a couple of quick connectors on it and run a house thermostat on the wall that way I can eat the shop up before I get there and keep it above freezing at night. When I'm working in the bigger part it is an insulated I just connect the two wires from the loop together at lunch is just on and off, I've had mine for 3 years now, no problems and it's a lot easier for me as I have diesel fuel there also the best part for me is it does not put a whole bunch of moisture into the shop like my propane hater did. I had horrible condensation probably inside my toolbox when running propane before or

Assuming you have a power source on your truck (generator / inverter) there are tons of these "torpedo" heaters out there. The only question is what do you prefer for fuel? I like propane over diesel, and I'm not huffing burnt diesel exhaust while working. Means carrying a propane tank, but a BBQ tank will last about 2 shifts - enough to get a tank refilled if a job runs long.
I also packed a pop up that I'd rigged canvas tarp "curtains" to that attached with carabiners and ties to the legs, and a couple coleman lanterns; I could turn an outdoor space into a heated workshop if it got brutal. ALso became a mini command post during some emergency events, when everyone eventually got "Cab Cabin Fever"...

Huh? I'm not heating a cab.

I prefer propane, no spills no smell. The liquid fuel heaters are also very picky after riding around in a service truck. But a lot of the new propane ones are also coming with too much safety BS per their online description. I don't need a faulty optical or heat sensor shutting off the fuel on a sub zero day, I'm more than capable of babysitting the unit a few feet from me.

I disabled all the nanny babysitter nonsense on mine for the same reason - I could well determine if the heater was popping or bobbing or the "nose cone" was turning red (which is how all mine ran anyway). Add to that if it fubarred, I repaired it. Warranty? I'm not going to haul or send the defective POS 150 miles to an "authorized service center" to wait 6 weeks while they decide if they can fix it or not. They're NOT THAT COMPLICATED. I'll fix it, and if it won't fix, I'll replace it - my time (even retired) is worth more than that...
