Well, I'm taking the plunge, so I'm a tad bit confused really on difference on the classic vs the master series.

The comments after reading here on the classic is that people prefer the master, based on comments within other topics of snap on.

So question for you all, which do you prefer, the classic, master, or the epiq ?

Seems the price delta between the epiq and master gets pretty small.

thanks in advance

IMO the Epiq is too pricey for what ya get. I mean its a nice box, and the big drawer for all the air tools and cordless stuff with the charging station would be SWEET, but not worth the extra to me -

I just sold a Heritage series box, it was a good starter box, built well, and sturdy w/o all the bells and whistles and fancy pants add ons that say the Master Series has.

The Classic series is a mid Point between the Heritage and the master series, but again, not all the bells and whistles..

It looks as though the master also has 2 rows of long drawers as well. I think I might like that. Thanks guys for the input so far. I'm just trying to decide which route to go before i take the plunge since this will hopefully last a lifetime

While the initial price will be more, get the box you want. This way you can build on THAT box, rather than doing like I am, and having to start over - Good Luck! Keep us posted with what ya get!

the master series is worth it. depending on what type of work you do. Heavy duty with heavy tools you need the master series. Though I have classic and had heritage series in my diesel shops they worked well.
More of my big guys use the master series. I do not have to worry about the box one I drop it off.
krl7000 series is the most popular among these guys over the past few years.
krl7023 and krl7003 ( old part number)

Master series in Snap-On boxes. Just find the drawer configuration you like the most and go from there. Don't go way bigger on a box that you really need. A liitle room is good to have but a few empty drawers is a lot of rent to pay for that space. I see guys all the time buy 2X more tool box than they need. Thats a lot of money for a drawer to hold nuts. bolts and old spark plugs

curious, what happened 4Star ? What made u start over ?

I outgrew the old box - so I'm having to start over. If I had it to do over again (years and years ago) I'd buy a box that was too big, and grow into it. As MrHoleShot said, its extra money to pay for the empty drawers, but it sure beats having to start over at square one, at least in my books it does.

Good Luck!

I've had four boxes in three years, upgrading each time. You can always sell a well cared for box pretty easily. If you buy the box for a good price used, you can always get your money out of them.

I'd say go with what you like the most - you're paying for it.
I'd second the idea of getting something bigger than just what you MUST have now - you'll grow into it. Especially considering how fast prices are going up, you'll be better off in the long run.
I also feel the epiq boxes are nice, but excessive for most people.

look at the depth and the drawer set up of each box.
2 full length drawers comes in handy.
prybars and torque wrenches are hard to store in some smaller boxes.
long extensions as well

thanks for the advice. I was wondering about the pry bars, good to know about the top two drawers in that configuration.

Is the gauge steel any different on the different lines ? Was wondering if one was any more durable or had any magic paint other than colors ?

i love my classic 96. the masters were a little over priced for me but i am happy with my choice. now if you have the cash get a used masters series, thats the best way to go.

classic 78 and a krl722 use the same drawers, but the case and the slides are different. same for the casters.

How exactly is the case, sides and casters different? Good information here... these are actually the EXACT two boxes which I have narrowed it down to. What about the long term trade in value of KRA vs. KRL boxes, to a SO dealer? Although I'm more than halfway across the country from you, and couldn't buy from you, care if I PM you some of the numbers I've been quoted so you can help me make the decision? Thanks.

I've owned both boxes, the Classic 78 for a few months and the KRL for the past 6 months or so, haven't used either that much (home use). The Classic 78 doesn't feel as solid empty but is very good when loaded with weight. However the drawers on the KRL are much more solid. Doing the highly scientific "jiggle test", the KRL is a lot stronger and resistant to twisting. The Classic 78 was a nice box, but everytime I open the KRL I remember how awesome it is.

For me a big difference is the second full width drawer which I find great for wrenches and the more solid drawer slides (twice the load capacity as the Classic 78).

KRL will always be better for resale as well, so maybe the extra cost may be reduced when you go to sell the box later on. I think the parts availability is going to be better for KRLs 20 years from now as well.
